Writing Exploration Writing Exploration takes place Monday Thursday.

. This lesson plan fits each Writing Exploration session for the week. Please see below for specific daily writing prompts. Essential Question: What do you know about the sun? What do you want to know about the sun? What is a daytime activity? What is a nighttime activity?

Learning Objectives: Student will be able to write 1-2 sentences independently Student will be able to illustrate their written ideas/thoughts with crayons Student will be able to identify facts they know about the sun Students will be able to identify nighttime and daytime activities

Common Core Standards:

Materials: Writing Exploration journals Crayons / Pencils Morning Meeting materials which support prompts (If needed)

Procedure: At the end of Morning Meeting, teacher provides the daily writing prompt to students Students sit at their neighborhoods Writing Exploration journals are distributed to students Students write 1-2 sentences in their Writing Exploration journals which address the daily prompt As students write, teachers circulate through the neighborhoods to aid/support/guide/ and re-direct students. After students complete their written work, they illustrate their thoughts/ideas/message with appropriate pictures using crayons

Differentiated Instruction: Teachers provide extra guidance and support for students who struggle with the writing process. Students who demonstrate proficient writing skills will be instructed to develop descriptive sentences / book spelling / and proper penmanship.

Assessment: This activity is formatively assessed. Teachers can evaluate student proficiencies by reviewing the written work completed with student Writing Exploration Journals. Teachers will be formatively assessing letter formation / word formation / sentence descriptiveness / punctuation & creativity of thought.

Daily Writing Prompts and Notes Monday: What are two things you already know about the sun?

Tuesday: What is something you would like to know about the sun? Present the K of a KWL chart to the class

Wednesday: What are two things you can do during the day time? Prior to Writing Exploration, present the Day / Night mini lesson

Thursday: What are two things you can do during the nighttime? Friday: N/A Monday: What is your favorite thing about the sun and why? Present the completed KWL chart to class
