4. Planning Thought Processes Context of Exploration A story will be read during circle time and then the children will do the journaling activity at tables. Rationale This activity was chosen to support intrapersonal learners and to assess a childs ability to recall details from their past and use picture and words to express ideas. The specific activity was chosen based on the current Ocean theme the children have shown an interest in. They especially like playing at the beach if they have been there or the idea of playing at the beach if they have not been. Anticipating challenges Children may not want to participate in the activity if they are not intrapersonal learners, I will engage them by getting them to talk about and draw about their favorite things at the beach. 5. Materials Plain paper Crayons Colored Pencils

6. Activity Procedure A. Motivation/Introduction - Read a book about a day at the beach like Just Grandma and Me by Mercer Mayer during circle time. - Ask who has been to the beach? - And Who would like to visit the beach? - I will ask the children to spread out at the tables and journal about their own day at the beach. B. Concept exploration - The story will be read on the carpet at circle time and then we will do the activity at tables. - The children will use colored pencils or crayons to draw a picture of their day at the beach. Either a past experience if they have been to the beach or an experience they would like to have at the beach if they have never been. - I will ask the children to dictate to me about their day and I will write it down. C. Inquiry (Open Ended Questions) - What did you do at the beach? - What was the weather like? - Who was there with you? - What did you see? - How did you feel? - What kind of sea life did you see? D. Closure - What would you like to do next time you go to the beach? - How did you feel about your day at the beach? - How would you feel if it rained or stormed on your day at the beach? - Or if the beach was closed and you couldnt play in the water? - Would you like to share your day at the beach with the class? - We will move to the circle carpet and share the journals. E. Assessment - The activity will be complete when the children have finished their journal story of their day at the beach and included their feeling about the experience. Or anticipated experience. I will document their progress by making a copy of their journal copy. - If further exploration of these materials is desired the children can create more stories.

about beach experiences. Extension Ideas - If further exploration of these materials is desired the children can create more stories about beach experiences. They could be invented or based on real experiences. Prompts could be given like One day I was at the beach and I saw a nest of sea turtle eggs, or it rained so . Or I saw a dolphin andWe could discuss how we would feel if it rained or stormed on our day at the beach. We could also extend the activity with a beach prop box for dramatic play.
