NED KELLY

Ned Kelly was one of the most famous Australian criminals. He was born in June 1855 in Beveridge, Victoria. His criminal life started when he was only 14 and after 2 crimes in 2 years he had caught the attention of the police. In his lifetime, it was recorded that he killed 6 people and wounded 4 people. How it started Ned was the eldest son of eight children to John 'Red' Kelly and Ellen Quinn. As a child, he saved another boy from drowning. After that when he was 14, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a Chinese man. The year after, he was arrested again, this time for being a suspected accomplice of bushranger Harry Power. Both these charges were dismissed, but it was too late: Ned had caught the attention of the police. The Kelly Gang The Kelly Gang included, Ned Kelly, the leader, Joe Bryne, Neds best friend, Dan Kelly, Neds youngest brother and Steve Hart, Dan Kellys friend. The Kelly Gang of bushrangers was formed in April 1878. Together they commit crimes such as bank robberies, murders and injuring people. The Final Showdown The four suits of armour, worn by the Kelly Gang, were only used at the final showdown between the th Kelly Gang and the Police in Glenrowan, on the 28 of June 1880. In the early hours of the morning the Gang were on the veranda of Mrs. Joness Hotel and shot at the police, who were surroun ding the building. Ned Kelly left the hotel to engage in the final shoot out with the police. Ned was captured after suffering wounds to his legs. The other members of the Kelly Gang were killed at the Hotel and Dan Kelly and Steve Hart died before a fire started in the hotel. It is not known whether they were th shot by the police or commit suicide. Ned Kelly was tried in Melbourne and was hanged on the 11 of November 1880 at the Old Melbourne Gaol. His remains have been identified by doctors and scientists at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM). His body which is missing most of the skull, was put into a wooden axe box and thrown into a mass grave with the corpses of other prisoners.
