Overview: Students will be given a check list of various geometry terms that they need to try and label

in their photo. Examples would be: parallel lines, circles, trapezoid, triangle, sphere, perpendicular lines, 90 angle, obtuse angle, symmetry, etc. I have noticed that unless students can see these geometry terms in a real life setting it is hard to apply and use correctly when completing math lessons. I have done a lesson like this in the past taking a walk around the school and looking for these items. With iPads now available in our school, I thought it would be a great way to integrate their use. The digital media I have selected to use for this project is a free iPad application called You Doodle, which is very simple and student friendly to use. It has a drawing tool to point out the shape they are identifying and then they can label it with text. There are opportunities for students to take one photo or to take four and put it onto a collage. That is also very easy to do. This will be a self-contained project. It can all be done with the iPad from taking the picture to the editing. The final project can then either be emailed to me or printed; I thought it would be easier to print it. Students will all have completed a tutorial previously using the application You Doodle before beginning this project. They do not need a storyboard or checklist for completion, the rubric is basically the checklist for the project. Topic: Learner audience: Learning objectives: Math Geometry Third grade Students will connect their environment with geometry. Students will collaborate to produce a photo collage. Students will create an edited photo using You Doodle.

NETS-S Standard: 2. Communication and Collaboration a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.

MN State Standard: B. Geometry Standard: Classify shapes by specified attributes. Identify simple shapes within complex shapes. The student will: 1. Identify, describe and classify two-dimensional shapes according to number and length of sides and kinds of angles. 2. Identify common two- and three-dimensional shapes that are components of more complex shapes. Guidelines: 1. Prerequisite - Students must have had You Doodle training before beginning this project! 2. You will work with the partner as assigned. 3. iPads are to be used for this project only. 4. Each person will be responsible for the iPad. 5. You and your partner will collaborate and agree on the contents of your finished product. Geometry is all around us in our world look around your classroom and find some geometry and take a picture of something with your iPad, try to be creative! Watch the quick video (3:36) made by 5th Graders http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD8MnqAfjek Project Steps: Day 1 60 minutes 1. Students will be given a copy of the geometry terms and of the rubric and it will be reviewed by everybody together. Questions will be answered at this time, and they will be made aware of how they will be assessed for this assignment. 2. Review together how you use You Doodle, and how terms should be labeled on the pictures. 3. Students will be put into groups of two, randomly. Day 2 30 minutes 4. Students will go outside and take a few pictures of landscape with the iPad for use for their project. (Keep in mind the geometry terms you are looking for when choosing your pictures). Each student in the

Motivation:

group will decide on two pictures they would like to use for labeling with You Doodle. Days 3 & 4 60 minutes each 5. Photos will then be opened in You Doodle. Students will use a handout with geometry terms (see below) to find in their photos. Taking turns and collaborating to label on the photo and its relevant contents. 6. Once completed, and students have reviewed the rubric again for understanding of project requirements, they need to print out their project. If this cannot be done, it will be emailed to Mrs. Wendt. Student groups: Resources: randomly selected, some mixed gender, groups of 2. iPad for each pair of students You Doodle application Rubric created for this assignment List of geometry terms Printer accessibility, or email address to send project Ask students what they have learned about their everyday space, and if they now realize that geometry is all around us! Post the completed assignments of the groups on a classroom bulletin board for the class to enjoy.

Closure:

****For extra credit have them turn in some pictures of some amazing geometric finds in our community.
