The Siculi in the East, and the Sicani in the West, were the first inhabitants of the island that originally was named Sicania. The Greeks after circumnavigating it called it Thrinakia, meaning island of the three capes (in Greek treis-three and akra-cape). Dante, in the eighth canto of the Paradise of the Divine Comedy, wrote three triplets describing the beautiful Trinacria. Myths and legends surround the birth of Sicily. The Triskele, its symbol, tells us that might have arisen thanks to three nymphs. The symbol of Trinacria is a mythological figure with the head of Medusa, whose hair is entwined serpents in the ears of corn, and three legs bent
at the knee that revolve around. According to the legend, three beautiful creatures roamed the world taking the best things from each place they visited. They halted all in an area of land characterized by an exceptionally clear sky and a sea intensely blue. They danced to celebrate, happy and fulfilled about their harvest, and in that place of unparalleled beauty, each of them threw into the sea their fruit giving rise to three capes. The sky shone with a bright rainbow and a rich land emerged from the sea with all wonders of the world united by three nymphs. Thus was born the beautiful Sicily, the island of the three capes.

Mediterranean Sea. It gives its name to the Island of Capo Passero that, although privately owned, houses the sixteenth century fortress of Charles V. Just opposite the island lies the seaside village of Portopalo, a charming village where time seems to stand still. At Portopalo a race between boats called The Palio of the sea or cussa de vacchi takes place. Its an ancient seafaring Siracuse event which, during the feast of St. Gaetano on August 7th, involves the regions in a race of challenges over three days. The event takes place at Scalo Mandrie. Do not miss the fish market of Portopalo, the most lively in Siracuse. Also, go ahead to the nearby Island of Currents, favourite destination of the most daring surfers in search of the perfect wave. Three kilometers to the North, visit the village of Marzamemi, with its historic Balata, old Tonnara, the Marina and the characteristic fishermen houses dating back to 1600. It has always been a natural set for the production of films for example South by Gabriele Salvatores, was filmed here. In late July, the centre of Marzamemi is crowded by VIPs participating in the review of the film Border Film Festival.

conquest by the Arabs, its name became Mars-elAllah, meaning Port of God. The modern city of Marsala stands just above the ancient necropolis, the early Christian catacombs, the mosaics and the paintings, as founded during the excavations. Many rest now in the National Archaeological Museum of Lilybeo (also known as Museum Baglio Anselmi) that you should not miss. Going around Marsala is a bit like walking in Rome, where ancient history and modern history alternate and sometimes overlap. The church of St. John the Baptist, which dates back to the fifth century AD, is located just above the socalled Cave of the Sibyl, that according to the legend it is the tomb or the shelter of the so called Sibilla Sumana or Sibilla Sicula. At the centre of the cave is a spring of fresh water. This ancient place of worship and prayer inspired by water, was even a baptismal font, and was therefore a place of pilgrimage and prophecy. As legend says, Ulysses stopped here to drink.

In 1890 the doors of the Theatre Vincenzo Bellini opened for the first time. The theatre had been built to the Design of the Milanese architect Carlo Sada. In its one hundred years (its the heart of Catanias musical life), the stage has been host to some of our centurys greatest musicians. The twelve hundred seats in the acoustically perfect hall fill to capacity every year; tickets are sold for performances of opera, symphonies and chamber music concerts. Many of the concerts are repeated in other towns in Sicily, and small groups of instrumentalists and vocalist from the orchestra and choir travel to promote these. The Vincenzo Bellini Theatre was opened in Catania on 31 st May 1890. The event was celebrated by a performance of Norma, the masterpiece of the great Catania composer to whom the Theatre was dedicated. It was a marvellous evening, a fervent experience in an auditorium lighted by trembling butterfly-shaped orange gas flames, making it a fascinating atmosphere.

Il borgo di Ognina
Ognina village
Ulysses is the name of the marina of Ognina, located in the North-east of the city of Catania. Before a devastating lava flow in the middle ages covered it almost entirely, the harbor was for a long time the major port for the city. Today it houses the docks for fish vessels and private boats, and some shipyards. The terraces overlooking the sea of prestigious private villas are the frame of the port. The Shrine of Our Lady of Ognina is right under the overpass, where you can walk seaside, along the cobbled lava stone streets. The sea breeze and the smell of fresh fish that arrives every morning whet the appetite. By Nitto in Piazza Mancini, you can stop for a fast taste, even to take away if you wish. A rustic shop where goodness and freshness count most. A display case to be watering oysters, sea urchins, octopus salad, mussels and clams as much as you can eat. To cook or ready to be enjoyed, right there. We highly recommend Nitto to seafood lovers. Please remember to say it was suggested by Amun.

Feast at the marina The Feast of Santa Maria di Ognina is celebrated every year on September 8th, the day of the Nativity of Mary. There are many events that take place during the festivities week. On 7th evening lets go to the street festival of the blue fish; on 8th afternoon lets see the suggestive of folk race boats in the harbor waters. Follow the procession at sea, exciting moment in which faith and tradition, show and spectacle come together naturally, and the procession through the streets of the village, of the statue of the Virgin Mary adorned with flowers placed on the Vara, to bless houses and inhabitants of the neighborhood.

Continuing North, both Acicastello and Acitrezza show clear evidence of past volcanic activity. The first has a Norman castle, from which it took its name, built on top of a cliff overlooking the sea, the second is dominated by the majestic Faraglioni and the Island Lachea that emerge from the sea. They are cyclopic rock of lava that according to the legend were thrown into the sea by Polyphemus against Ulysses. Canoeing, windsurfing, boating and diving in the Cyclops Islands Marine Reserve are just some of the activities that are available in this area. Da Visitare Must See

A natural movie set, Taormina has shown its beauty through a thousand scenarios in many films. Whether its as a seaside scene in Beautiful Island; countryside between prickles and gorses or a chase through the streets amongst Greek columns and medieval Arab fortresses, its Taormina that will have been glimpsed. Thousands of films were produced on location here, which are amongst the most beautiful and unique in the world. Intrigo in Taormina with Ugo Tognazzi and Walter Chiari (1960), Il piccolo diavolo with Roberto Benigni (1988), Le grand bleu by Luc Besson, starring Jean Reno (1988), The Godfather (Part III) by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Al Pacino (1990), just to name a few of the most popular for their international cast and for their success. Look around you and admire landscapes, streets and views; some places will seem familiar to you, reminiscent of a movie scene. Wonder and surprise waits for you the passing Sicilian cart, souvenir shops and
wonderful ice creams, its all in the movies! The best way to visit Taormina starts from Porta Messina and Porta Catania, depending on the side you enter town, through corso Umberto I. One hundred meters behond Porta Messina is Palazzo Corvaja, now the tourist office. It was originally an Arab tower to which new buildings were added to become the residence of the Corvaja family; today it houses the Museum of Ethnography and folk traditions. The two doors of the town, medieval defensive stronghold, are still together by the old Arab walls. Only few know that there is a third gate called the middle one, which is that of the Clock Tower, halfway between the two. From Porta Messina, take the first on your right to reach the wonderful Greek Theatre. It is the second largest theatre in Sicily behind Syracuse, and the third in the world. It was enlarged by the Romans and it is the only one with a natural landscape as a backdrop. The auditorium has a radius of 109 meters. It had nine sectors of steps, made of blocks of stone, and was surmounted by a portico which contained wooden seats. Between the auditorium and the stage, there is still the orchestra pit and the sides of the scene, two halls, which served as dressing rooms for artists and shelter for spectators in case of rain. Keep going on corso Umberto I until you join the Clock Tower where you can enjoy a unique setting , from piazza S. Augustine , of the coast. Before concluding your journey up to Porta Catania, have a look at the magnificent palaces of the Old Abbey and Palace Santo Stefano, both built in the fifteenth century. The first one was the residence of Constance of Aragon, and changed its name into Abbey when she became abbess, while the second has now beautiful gardens and hosts the Fondazione Mazzullo.
Getting on board a cable car is always exciting! In a few minutes, it takes you from the center of Taormina to Mazzars deep blue sea, otherwise known as Taormina seafront. The Arabs called it Kalaat - al Bian, but some findings suggest its existence since the time of the Greeks around the III century BC. The fortress stands on a hill overlooking the valley of the Alcantara river, the bay of Giardini Naxos and Taormina. The visit to the castle offers excitement and a landscape of unparalleled beauty, from the moment you get in the glass elevator that goes up the hill to the castle. You will take a real journey through time by visiting the armory, in use since the III century B.C. The Cruyllas room built in the XV century has a strong medieval charm and the little chapel situated in beautiful surroundings. Here, time passes slowly, relaxation and tranquility are a given. Stop for a break in the cafeteria, treat yourself to a good book which you will find in the Castle Bookshop and enjoy the panorama that is among the most beautiful of the island. And if you love good food, dont hold back - the well-known chef from Acireale, Dario Pugliatti, will cook for you every day for lunch and dinner on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays will delight you with some great dishes of haute cuisine! Guides recommend not to miss the beauties of the Nebrodi and not to get lost!

The oldest part of Syracuse is located on an small island called Ortigia, connected to the mainland by bridges, as in Venice. In the South, is the Castle of Maniace built by Frederick II of Sweden, right an annex of just 200 meters. Our tour of discovering Ortigia starts from Piazza Archimede, walking along Via della Maestranza and ends by the sea. Via della Maestranza is a strong witness to the baroque style of its noble palaces, of the meticulous work of artisans and decorators, hired by the rich families of that

Some examples these are: the palace of the Prince Bonanno at No. 33, the palace Zappata-Gargallo at No. 50 and the palace Bufardeci at No. 72. Keep on walking towards the Cathedral, built on the ruins of the Temple of Athena, and head south for 350 meters, to Passeggio Arthusa where you will meet the legendary Arethusa Fountain. It is a freshwater source that flows from a cave a few meters from the sea, that became the perfect environment for fish, ducks and large papyrus plants. La culla dellisola
Palermo araba
inscription in Arabic. Another example is in the church of the Martorana, where two columns were fitted with Arabic inscription added in Baroque time. In the region of Palermo, near Cefal Diana, there is a medieval bath located close to a thermal source. Another noteworthy example is the ceiling of the Cappella Palatina, in the Norman Palace, reserved for the king and the court. The ceiling covers the compartment of the chapel, covered with beautiful Byzantine mosaics and domes in the shape of stars are arranged in two rows, while the walls come down the muqarnas, cell-like elements, typical of Islamic architecture. In the ceiling, made of cedar wood and then painted, its hard to feel the incredible richness of decoration of the imperial figures, of the musicians, of the dancers, and the daily life scenes that represent aspects of the life of a Muslim prince of those times.

The Capuchin Convent of the sixteenth century is located in the district of Cuba in Palermo. Reaching the old port of Cefalu, you see traditional Mediterranean harbour with its colorful boats, its pier and, on the horizon the promontory overlooking the sea, where there is the fortress that houses the eponymous castle.
