During the summer vacation, I had the opportunity to visit JIPMER, Puducherry ( Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education

and Research). The origin of JIPMER dates back to 1823 when the French Government established a medical school called cole de Mdecine de Pondichry to give medical diplomas. At the time of de facto transfer of Pondicherry to Government of India, the medical school was taken over by the Government of India and was converted into a medical college and named as Dhanvantari Medical College. Later, in the year 1964, it was upgraded to Regional Postgraduate Institute and named after our first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, as Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). Its campus is spread over 195 acres of sloping land that is a hillock, known in vernacular as Gorimedu. Over the years, it has grown as one of the premier institutes of the country known for excellent standards both in medical education and socially accountable patient care. Alumni of this Institute are placed in high positions all over the world. JIPMER was declared as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in the year 2008.

While consistently ranked in the top ten medical colleges in the country over decades, in 2011-12, JIPMER secured its highest ranking of being third in the country. JIP MER is having many departments some of them are general, some specialty and some super-specialty departments. Some of the departments and the activities being performed in these departments are as follows:
