In any essay, the single most important sentence is the thesis.

This single sentence summarizes the purpose of the writing by clearly stating an opinion or central idea. No matter what type of essay, whether the SAT, GED, ACT or most college entrance exams, the thesis sentence can make or break the exam. Knowing a few topics to write about for an exam saves time and effort, along with improving a grade. Should President Obama be blamed for the economic woes of 2008, or should the corporations running Wall Street be blamed? Would school uniforms decrease violence in school or is dictating student outfits going too far? Do texting and writing emails lower the ability of children and adults to write clearly and formally? Should school continue to teach cursive writing? Does global warming exist or is it a natural phenomenon? Is the death penalty an effective deterrent toward crime or should they eliminate it? Should candidates be allowed to raise funds for office or should all candidates be given an equal amount? Should torture be allowed to extract information from a captive if it saves American lives or is torture always wrong? Are teachers prepared for the education system or are schools producing mediocre educators? Should cigarette smoking be further taxed or even be made illegal, or is that an infringement of civil liberties? Should parents do more to protect children from sexual predators or are the dangers magnified by the media? Should schools continue their dependence on school testing, or is that an unfair way of measuring educational quality? Did children behave better fifty years ago, or have children remained the same? Should schools teach sex education, or continue with an "abstinence-only" program? Should all citizens be required to learn and use English or should the US embrace different languages?
