The vector controlled drive consists of the induction motor of 373 W, 220 V, 50 Hz.

The IGBT based inverter is designed to drive the motor. The IGBT is selected over MOSFET, SCR and GTO as it is giving desirable operating power, voltage and frequency range. Generally high switching frequency is recommended because high switching frequency creates harmonics of higher frequencies which can be easily filtered out. But the switching frequency cannot be increased indiscriminately as it increases switching losses. The switching frequency is considered as 10 kHz. The GTO switch cannot be operated at such high frequency. The available DC supply voltage required for inverter is of 120 volts. To avoid snubber circuits in the switches of the inverter, voltage rating of the switches should be more than five times that of the DC supply voltage which turns out to be more than 600 volts. The maximum line to line voltage at the output of the inverter at unity modulation index is around 120/ V i.e. 84.865 V. This voltage is stepped up using transformer having turns ratio of 3. The ratings of transformer are 1000 VA, 80/230 V, 3 phase, 50 Hz, Delta-Delta connected. The current drawn by the motor at full load condition is 2.1 Amps. The current on the primary side of the transformer is typically three times i.e. around 6.3 Amps. The switches must be designed for at list twice the required current rating. Hence switches must have current carrying capacity of at least 12.6 A. The MOSFET switch of high power rating is costlier than IGBT switch. Hence IGBT switch is chosen for inverter bridge. The IGBT IRG4PH50UD is selected which is having voltage rating of 1200 V and current rating of 24 A.
