They have now decided that it really is time to retire so we wish them all the best. We know that the weather in the UK has reached high temperatures and there are numerous cases of people dying from the heat and getting severe sunburn. Here in Spain of course the temperatures are constantly in the high 30s-40s at this time of year, so do be sensible if you are at the beach or swimming in the pool at home. Set at the end of the bay in La Azoha, the Antipodas Restaurant is one of the best places to go in the area to sit and watch the evening sun set over the bay. Add to that the extensive menu and the quality of the food and it is one of the places that you really must try. There is a Menu del Da or A la Carte option and always several Specials of the day. We decided to book a table for an early lunch and the restaurant was quiet, but many tables were already reserved. Our party was offered the chance to buy a whole enormous tuna for 120, which would probably have served around 12 people as a main course and had been caught in the Bay of Mazarrn
that morning. Sadly only 3 of us wanted sh and didnt think we could manage to eat the giant (!), but it is worth asking the waiter about the daily specials. The salads were fresh and varied, and we chose a mix of sh and meat courses. Service was excellent, with our waiter taking the time to explain everything to us and there was no rush, even though we were ages deciding. My chicken dish was really tasty and the general opinion of the group was the food and location was rst class. The extensive menu has something to cater for all tastes. My son still declares the Menestra de Verduras from a previous visit the best vegeta-
bles I have ever tasted. If you want one of the front line terrace tables with views over the sea, then booking is essential in holiday season, but it is worth it for the view! Rating: (out of 5) Quality Service Value for Money Location : : : :
Murraymania has hit town! The TV news channels, newspapers and even the social networking sites were full of the news about Andy Murray winning the Wimbledon Mens Singles Title. Adulation, praise and British pride in the young mans achievement was to be heard and seen everywhere and I have no doubt that it will inspire many young people to either take up tennis or get back to some serious training for the future... if He can do it, maybe, just maybe I can, is possibly the thoughts of many aspiring junior tennis players. This is all good news and we need people who can inspire us to dream big and aim high in life. These are a few of the comments about Andy Murrays victory that I have read. Hit like if you are proud of Andy Murray; another read Murray is the rst Brit to win the title wearing short trousers, and yet another read The last time a male Brit won the singles title was 77 years ago. The last time a female Brit won the singles title was Virginia Wade in 1977. Andy Murray wins on 7/7 Im sure he must be in 7th heaven!
in our lives and very often we see patterns forming. The Hebrew word for luck [Gad] means 7, but I am sure that Mr Murray would dispute vehemently that luck played any part in his match win - He was up for it and had tirelessly trained for the event, both mentally and physically, day in and day out. Achievements like his do not come easy and none of us will ever know the heartaches and pain He has endured to reach this pinnacle of his career. In the Bible the number 7 is a most powerful number; it symbolizes Completeness and Perfection - for Andy Murray we could say that He played a near perfect game and nally achieved his dream of winning the Wimbledon men singles title. All this, from a young man who survived the Dunblane Primary School massacre of March 13th 1996 when a gunman, well known to the Murray family, walked into the school and red 109 shots which killed 16 schoolmates and a teacher and then took his own life; news reports say that Andy was present and took cover in a classroom. Experiencing events like this could cause many to withdraw from society and live very closed lives, but not Andy Murray and I applaud him for that courage.
Already there are appearing some negative comments about this brave young man and I think that it is such a shame that so often we celebrate a winner and then we start attacking that winner almost before the applause has died down. It was the same for Jesus - one day He rode into Jerusalem to the praise and adulation of thousands who even took off their expensive cloaks and spread them in his pathway to form a carpet t for a king. The crown shouted Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. One week later the same people spat in his face and crucied him why? Because He did not meet their expectations and He did not do what they wanted him to do; Jesus did exactly what God his Father told him to do. The response from Jesus as He was dying on the cross was Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. That forgiveness extends to every one of us today and that is another winning situation.
Lucky number 7? - Its strange how we equate numbers with things that happen
If you like boat trips, dolphins and/or snorkelling, then you need look no further than Cetaceos & Navegacion based in the New Marina in Puerto de Mazarrn. Antonio, Paul and Rosa are all highly qualied and very knowledgeable about the local sh and dolphin population and they take safety very seriously, so you will be in safe hands.
Cetaceos & Navegacion offer two trips a day, 7 days a week from May until September. The rst route leaves each day at 9am and returns around 2pm, which is a dolphin watching trip. There are a number of species of dolphins that can be identied around the coast and sightings are frequent. The trip also includes a stop-off at a cove where they will anchor so you can have a swim before returning to the port. The cost of this trip is 50 for adults and 40 for children, but it does include a sandwich and a drink. The cost also covers insurance, a qualied skipper and marine biologist.
The second route is a boat trip to a deserted cove for snorkelling. This starts later in the day at 5pm and returns around 10pm. It takes about an hour to get the most beautiful secluded beach beneath Cabo Tinoso where you will nd the most stunning crystal clear water. The crew really know how to get the sh to come to the surface and they dive down with bread so that by the time you are ready to snorkel you are surrounded by the most amazing display of sh. This trip costs only 35 for adults and 25 for children and is well worth the cost. The crew have onboard pictures of the local sh you may spot on the way there and those that you will be able to identify whilst snorkelling. If you are nervous and have not been before do not let this put you off. They take safety very seriously and you can even hold onto a rope in the water if you need a rest. The years heat really hit suddenly but much later this year. As I write this we are on our 4th day of hazy cloud (and even two showers) I am sure I have not seen in July before, but its still HOT! The garden, even with the rain and our free well water, looks its usual struggling July/August way. Like us, all the plants would love a break from the heat! However, the terrapins seem to love stretching out in the full sun. Our neighbour Antonio continues to cultivate our lower land, using our water (!), but supplying us with a constant stream of fresh cut vegetables. No problem with our 5 a day this year! His onions are magnicent! TV NEWS Firstly, just a quick extension of lasts months feature on the demise of xxxx.terra.es emails. Our old address rainbowsats@terra.es no longer functions. Please use rainbowsats@ gmail.com. What I didnt say, was that lots of you who had the newsletter email delivered did not get it because @terra.es does not work and we had 25 or so returned undelivered, so if you had an @terra.es address and have changed it, then let us know so we can resend you the newsletter - anyone else who wants to subscribe just let us know.
The big TV news is the possible, and I repeat possible, problems coming up with the BBC, ITV and some 4 Channels. ALL other channels will not be affected. The launch of the new E satellite for these channels, due 16th July, has been postponed as the Russians had yet another rocket catastrophe - complete burn-up soon after launch. Watch it at http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=ZWv4ZZArP-g quite spectacular except for the local town sprayed with poisonous fuel. Now the Russians are saying, just a few days after the crash, that there were some sensors mounted upside down!? The general consensus is that they could not know that so quickly and the story is just to try to regain condence in the launches. Whatever, the next launches are sure to be delayed and thus our possible problems delayed. I will repeat last months statement that no-one knows the nal outcome of these changes, so dont get talked into spending money on some system upgrade that may not be necessary or may not be adequate. If the very worst did happen and those channels were just not available on satellite systems, then there is always Internet TV, but you must have an excellent internet connection to watch a satisfactory picture. If you are getting internet installed, a precautionary step you could take is asking
your provider Will this connection support live internet TV? Good internet TV is available with some great features, but the internet connection must be A1 with no download limits. Most systems say a 2MB connection is required, but its not just about speed, but also consistency. A recent client had a 3MB connection, veried on www.speedtest. net with decent ping and jitter (line quality measurements), but the internet TV was hopeless and could not be resolved. Beware! Newcomers to Murcia Region and buying property, check to ensure UK TV will be available there by some method. So many buy, then ask us to install UK TV and there is nowhere for a dish and no decent internet available. Get us to survey before you nally buy. Lewiss Story I was having an after work drink at a local El Pareton bar and noticed a little dog running up and down the road just in front of the bar. I had a look to see if he was with anyone and cars were missing him by inches. I saw this
happen a couple of times until I could stand it no more and picked him up! He was thin and full of the usual tics, eas and worms, but very friendly. I took him home, gave him the works and now he is a nice small good natured youngster - unfortunately I have two large dogs and they havent taken to Lewis and it was a constant worry keeping him safe. Thanks to MAMAS he is now neutered and vaccinated and has a clean bill of health so I was able to nd him a new home with caring couple who are delighted with their new companion.. A Matter Of Time We all lead such busy lives and sometimes we can get so wrapped up in situations that we hardly have time to think about the simpler things in life. The gift of time belongs to everyone to experience in whatever way you choose- spending it, thinking about it and dedicating it to something or someone important. As they say, Time and tide waits for no man, so perhaps we need to take time out of our busy schedules and reect on our good tidings, family and friends. The gift of our time is the most precious, yet free, gift that we can give to our loved ones. Dont waste time thinking about the future, as we dont know what is around the corner. We cant predict it, we cant control it, but we can try to shape it by being happy and living in the present. Enjoy the gift of time. Dear Jennifer LONESOME My husband was my everything my partner, my best friend, my knight in
shining armour. It was very difcult getting over his death two years ago and was made even tougher by the fact that I dont have very many female friends. You see, we were totally compatible, so I didnt feel the need to socialise with my friends or go on shopping expeditions without him. We even went to the hairdresser together! Unfortunately, his demise has now left me without companionship and friends and I am very lonely. My friends dont have time for me now and I really dont know how to make new friends. Any ideas? Mandy J. Dear Mandy Losing your soul mate is hard and it is even harder trying to ll the void though not impossible. Try to nd a widow support group near you or the equivalent. Spending time with others who have experienced the same type of loss will give you opportunities to develop new friendships. Once you have some company, you can join other social groups to enjoy your free time. Wouldnt your late husband want you to get on with your life? Every year at this time, I start to put aside some money to buy my ve grandchildren Christmas gifts. However, I am nding it more difcult as I need every cent to pay my bills. Besides, my grandchildren are now adults and gifts are becoming more costly. I dont want to be Scrooge and let them down. Is there an acceptable cut- off age to stop giving my grandchildren gifts? Liz C. Dear Liz There isnt an ofcial cut-off age for giving gifts and it is down to the individual and their respective circumstances. In this busy world, try spending time with your family instead of buying presents for everyone. Do something exciting as a family. Give them a gift of your time and create wonderful memories instead of buying them something that will be forgotten by the New Year. St Nicholas Ecumenical Church Calle Sobrija 2248 Sector D20 Camposol By Rev Len Eaton MBE www.stnicholaschurchspain.com Bereavement These past months there have been a number of deaths at Camposol and once again the need to do some forward planning for this event has been highlighted. Death in a family always brings with it great sorrow and to those left behind, often the inability to think logically. In your home country frequently relatives and lifelong friends are there for support and the procedure for dealing with a death and the associated paperwork and legal requirements are reasonably well known and do not normally present pressing problems. Here in Spain, however, when perhaps the nearest family members are in Northern Europe and the only people who offer any real support are friends and neighbours, the situation is very different, especially since many of us lack the most basic understanding of the Spanish language, not to mention the complex and often obscure legal requirements. At the time of death of a loved one, the worry and fear of what to do next can be greatly ameliorated by having a plan of action formulated and known to all members of the immediate family and friends. This inevitably means people sitting down together and discussing what is going to happen when they die and although many will nd this distasteful, it is something which should not be delayed or put off. The plan should contain the telephone numbers of the local Medical Centre; the Doctor (if you have one); local emergency numbers;
the local Tanatorio and a contact number for your immediate family if not living locally. In order to take all unnecessary stress away, it is best to contact your local Tanatorio (undertaker) who is a professional and has the facilities and the knowledge to deal with the situation in a proper manner. The Tanatorio has Chapels of Rest, appropriate transportation, a Chapel where a funeral service can take place, contact with the crematorium or local authority if entombment is required and above all the training and skill to deal with all other aspects of a death required by the Spanish authorities. At the end of their work there will be a consolidated bill. This is not likely to be cheap and in order to prepare for that bill it is wise, if you can possibly afford it, to buy some funeral insurance and include the details of this in your plan. There are many companies around offering Funeral Plans and it is wise to shop around in order to get the best deal to suit your requirements. Help is always available if you know who to contact. St Nicholas Ecumenical Church at Camposol, for example, has a Pastoral Support Team, who are ready to help at any time and there are many others such as Age Concern, MABS and FAST, who offer help and advice. Find the contact numbers for these and any others who you think may help you. Do it soon; do not delay, it may be too late if you do. After the funeral there are other matters which will need attention; who to inform regarding pensions and other income; how to deal with insurances so that a claim can be made; how to go about probate, inheritance tax etc. Help is available in these complex areas, but include the information in your plan. There are many scal and legal advi-
sors available. Find one that suits you and get the information in your personal plan as soon as you can. This is literally a matter of life and death for the grieving loved. A simple plan, such as I have outlined will save a tremendous lot of worry and heartache. Alistair MacLean was born on 21 April 1922 to a Christian pastor in Glasgow. He learned English as his second language after his mother tongue, Scottish Gaelic and spent much of his childhood and youth in Daviot, ten miles south of Inverness. He was the third of four sons. Maclean joined the Royal Navy in 1941, serving in World War II with the ranks of Ordinary Seaman, Able Seaman, and Leading Torpedo Operator. MacLean was released from the Royal Navy in 1946. He then studied English at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1953, and then worked as a school teacher in Rutherglen. While a university student, MacLean began writing short stories for extra income, winning a competition in 1954 with the maritime story Dileas. The publishing company Collins asked him for a novel and he responded with HMS Ulysses, based on his own war experiences, as well as credited insight from his brother Ian, a Master Mariner. The novel was a great success and MacLean was soon able to devote himself entirely to writing war stories, spy stories and other adventures. MacLeans books eventually sold so well that he moved to Switzerland as a tax exile. From 19631966, he took a hiatus from writing to run a hotel business in England. He also struggled constantly with alcoholism, which eventually brought about his death in Munich in 1987. He is buried a few yards from Richard Burton in Cligny, Switzerland. He was married twice and had three sons with his rst wife; the third son was adopted. MacLean was awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University of Glasgow in 1983. Nature, especially the sea and the Arctic north, played an important part in MacLeans stories and he used a variety of exotic parts of the world as settings to his books. Only one of them, When Eight Bells Toll, is set in his native Scotland. MacLeans best books are often those in which he was able to make use of his own direct knowledge of warfare and seafare, such as HMS Ulysses which is now considered a classic of naval ction. Many of MacLeans novels were made into lms, but none completely captured the level of detail
and the intensity of his writing style, but after his death, the popularity of MacLeans work saw a decline. Despite the fact that Macleans books were written quite a few years ago, they are still worth a read or re-read. His later books in the 80s and 90s, including Death Train and Dead Halt, were written in collaboration with Alistair MacNeill. The Guns of Navarone (1957) This is a classic World War II thriller from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. Twelve hundred British soldiers isolated on the small island of Kheros off the Turkish coast, are waiting to die. Twelve hundred lives in jeopardy, lives that could be saved if only the guns could be silenced; the guns of Navarone, vigilant, savage and catastrophically accurate. Navarone itself, a grim bastion of narrow straits manned by a mixed garrison of Germans and Italians, an apparently impregnable iron fortress. To Captain Keith Mallory, skilled saboteur, trained mountaineer, had the task of leading the small party detailed to scale the vast, impossible precipice of Navarone and to blow up the guns. The Guns of Navarone is the story of that mission, the tale of a calculated risk taken in the time of war. Ice Station Zebra (1960) The Dolphin, pride of Americas nuclear eet, is the only submarine capable
of attempting the rescue of a British meteorological team trapped on the polar ice cap. The ofcers of the Dolphin know well the hazards of such an assignment. What they do not know is that the rescue attempt is really a cover-up for one of the most desperate espionage missions of the Cold War and that the Dolphin is heading straight for sub-zero disaster, facing hidding sabotage, murder and a deadly, invisible enemy. Bear Island (1971) Bear Island, known as the wartime graveyard of the Arctic, where Nazi submarines lay in wait for the Murmansk convoys, is the setting for this novel. As the charter ship Morning Rose sails through wintry seas towards the island, the doctor on board, Christopher Marlowe, is kept busy attending to his sea-sick patients, the members of a lm unit who are to make a lm on Bear Island so secret that none of them know much about it. Another, more mysterious malady attacks them and in some cases proves fatal, but there is something highly unnatural about both the illness and its selection of victims. The Morning Rose has a murderer on board. Marlowe realizes that he is included in the elimination campaign. Before the ship has anchored under the towering cliffs of Bear Island, there has already been an attempt on his life. Then, in the encampment, events on board fuse into a pattern of terror as suspicion shifts from one member of the company to another and further deaths take place. Someone in the lm unit is intent on preventing Marlowe and others from sharing the secret of the island, and what lies beyond the Gates of Pearl. Beset by the conicting temperaments and nationalities within the frightened group, Marlowe contends with grim humour against weather, terrain and ruthless adversaries, as events build up to a tremendous climax in the darkness of the Polar night.

Who do you trust with your life? In the 19th century, a tightrope walker walked, 160 feet above the Niagara Falls. He did this many times and in a variety of modes. He crossed on stilts, blindfold, pushing a wheelbarrow and even cooking in the middle! Everyone who watched him knew for certain that he was the very best - but would they put their trust in him? E-Cigarettes have become popular because they allow smokers to receive nicotine without the tar, smoke and cocktail of other compound chemicals that cause the harm from real cigarettes. Whilst no-one disputes that nicotine itself is addictive, when vaped through an E-Cigarette (although admittedly there are no long-term studies), most medical professionals rate it as 99% harmless (Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) 2013). Like everything, there are different grades, strengths and quality of the e-liquids available to buy and no-one denies that ECigarettes should meet basic standards of safety and quality, but there are enough consumer protection laws in place and common sense would tell you that if you are putting something into your lungs you should be buying products from a reliable source and they should be clearly labelled with the strength of nicotine content. E-liquids come in a variety of avours. Most people start with tobacco avour and then move on to something different to disassociate from real smoking. This has led to calls that E-Cigarettes will act as a gateway for children and non-smokers to take up the habit of vaping, but so far ASH have not found any evidence to substantiate this. Ok, let us now talk money; as a heavy smoker, married to another heavy smoker, I found that between us we were spending 100 a week on ordinary cigarettes. Since switching to E-Cigarettes we spend about 10 a week between us on uids. This is quite a benet, without even taking into consideration the improvement in our health and energy levels and the lack of lthy ash trays to clean up! E-uids are relatively cheap because they are not subject to the taxes that apply to tobacco products. (In the UK alone these bring in the Government 9bn annually). It is no surprise therefore that MPs are at the forefront of current discussions. Apart from MPs calling for greater restrictions on these products, you also have the pharmaceutical companies calling for them to be classied as pharmaceutical products; i.e. only available from them. This is not surprising when you consider that the nicotine-replacement therapies currently available on prescription such as patches and gums turned over 117 million in 2011. Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world said Mark Twain. I know because I have done it thousands of times. I, like Mark Twain had tried stopping on numerous occasions, but always fell back to my smoke-lled comfort zone at the slightest bit of stress. Since my husband handed me an E-Cigarette (or my peace pipe as I jokingly call it), 4 months ago, I havent had a real cigarette; nor have I wanted one. Let us just hope that the future of E-Cigarettes is not stied by heavy and unnecessary legislation that would deny people addicted to a profoundly damaging substance the opportunity to transfer that addiction to a product that many medical professionals rate as safe as drinking coffee. Watercress Berro Watercress is a fast-growing, aquatic or semi-aquatic, perennial plant native to Europe and Asia and one of the oldest known leaf vegetables consumed by humans. It is botanically related to garden cress, mustard and radish which are all noted for their peppery, tangy avour. Watercress is closely related to nasturtiums and it has hollow stems that oat on the water. It produces white and green owers that grow in clusters.

The leaves of watercress are smooth and slightly plump having one to four pairs of little oblong or disk-shaped leaets and are a deep green colour. Watercress must be fresh when bought as it does not dry and it is marketed in sealed plastic bags that have some moisture in them. It is essential not to crush the leaves and should only be stored for one or two days in the fridge. Once owers start to appear on the Watercress plant, the plant becomes bitter and so is unsuitable for eating. In some regions, Watercress is regarded as a weed; in other regions as an aquatic vegetable or herb. Watercress has been grown in
many locations around the world and was rst commercially cultivated in the early 1800s. It is very popular in the UK and the town of Alresford, near Winchester, holds a Watercress Festival that brings in more than 15,000 visitors every year and a preserved steam railway line has been named after the local crop.

Because it is relatively rich in Vitamin C, Watercress was suggested by English military surgeon John Woodall as a remedy for scurvy. Many benets from eating watercress are claimed, such as that it acts as a stimulant, a diuretic, an expectorant, and a digestive aid. It also appears to have anti-angiogenic cancer-suppressing properties and it is widely believed to help defend against lung cancer and may also inhibit the growth of breast cancer. Watercress is also believed to stop bleeding, when mixed with vinegar. A special soup prepared with Watercress is among the most popular medications among the Chinese. This soup is used to cure swollen gums, bad breath and ulcers in the mouth. An infusion prepared from Watercress is also a proven traditional as well as an effectual remedy for dermatitis and eczema. Watercress is popular not only as a garnish, but is used in salads, sandwiches, casseroles and soups and it adds a fast and spicy avour to all these preparations. Despite its good points, Watercress crops can be a haven for parasites such as the liver uke, which is why it is essential that this herb is eaten fresh and washed well prior to use.

Whats In A Name?? There are very few things in life that I feel I cant live without and I have never been a great fan of gadgets and gizmos, but when we moved into our new house a year ago and set up the TV installation, one of the things on offer seemed too good to be true. My new Freeview box could record two things at once, be programmed to record all my favourite shows and I could even pause live TV. How is that even possible! Of course on installation day, Matt and Alan from Rainbow Satallites were wise to tell my son, then 8, how the system worked and we were instantly hit by weeks of Pokemon recording daily whilst he was
at school. One of my favourite things is to browse the movie channels for the days ahead and record just about anything that takes my fancy, although I have so little time to watch the stuff that the list does get rather long! Finally, last week I decided to sit down and watch a movie. But hang on, what on earth has happened to the stuff I recorded? I dont remember a movie with the unlikely name Man on Sausage, followed in my list by an episode of Once Upon A Pie and I am sure that the thriller wasnt called In The Name of the Sausage! It seems like someone has been up to their
tricks again! Called through to explain themselves, the dynamic duo confess that they can rename any programme I have recorded with silly titles, most of which seemed to contain the words pie and sausage! It took me ages to gure out exactly what I had to watch, but I couldnt be bothered to change all the names back to the originals. Ah well - time to relax. Dear Editor We recently took our dog Flossy to Pampered Paws on Camposol to give her a summer hair cut. Shed been to a local Spanish groomer in the past, but when we collected her she had got cuts on her from where theyd caught her as they were shaving her because she kept moving. We werent happy with what had happened, so this time decided to try an English groomer. I explained to Joanne from Pampered Paws what had happened the last time and how Flossy wasnt happy when they were trying to shave her. Joanne assured us that Flossy would be ok with her and we could leave her there and collect her in an hours time. As we drove away we could hear Flossy howling and expected to have a phone call from Joanne to go back and collect her as she couldnt work on her. The phone stayed quiet! About an hour later we got a message to say that Flossy was just about nished and we could go back and pick her up. We were apprehensive when we went back in case there had been problems with her, but she looked great. Joanne said that there hadnt been any problems with Flossy and shed been well behaved. Flossy loves her new hair cut and we are really happy with how she looks. Joanne did a great job and Flossy is already booked in for her next cut in September. The food was outstanding, of a very high quality, generous portions and as theyre so reasonably priced they can be enjoyed regularly. Their website is full of other delicious meals including starters, salads, soups, desserts and they even do a Sunday dinner. These are ideal to pop in the freezer for those days when you dont fancy cooking and of course for those on their own who cant be bothered. I understand they also do catering for parties, so Ill be bearing that in mind for the future. My mouth is watering already at the thought of ordering more, although Ill have to be careful how I mention it to my other half as I dont want her to think Im criticizing her cooking and start a domestic! Having had a previous cat stay in their catotel I suppose I should have known better than to worry and our 2 little ones will be back there for another holiday without hesitation. It really is a home from home there and Helen and Derek treat the cats in their care as their own. Its so refreshing to know its not just a business to them, but they truly enjoy being surrounded by furry friends. Doctors are diagnosing Alzheimers disease and other types of dementias more and more often and are able to recommend certain drugs to help the sufferers, but nothing much is said about how the carers should cope with these dreadful diseases and how difcult their lives can become; dramatically in some cases. Here, in Murcia, we do not have an Alzheimers group to turn to for advice or help at present. With that in mind, some carers, accompanied by their suffering partners, met on Thursday 11 July for a coffee at Caf Golf, San Javier, just to chat to each
other. Problems Shared This proved to be an hour of respite for the carers. It also gave them a chance to talk about their shared problems or anxieties, whilst their partners sat together at a separate table, where they talked about their past histories to each other. Since they all suffer with short-term memory, this worked out well. Those attending felt this should become a regular fortnightly event, backed by the owners of Caf Golf, so have agreed to meet again on Thursday, 8th and 22nd August and at 11am. We invite anyone interested, particularly struggling carers and their partners, who live in the Murcia region, to join us. Its just an informal get-together, but at the same time, very comforting to learn and share with others, so do please come along. ......And The Band Plays On For HAH Mar Menor Following their recent successful tour on the Costas, the brilliant ORBI Playa Big Band made their way to La Vereda Restaurant in Sucina on Wednesday July 3rd for another sellout performance.
These extremely talented musicians soon had people dancing and singing along to such favourites as Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and many others. Led by Mike Hamnett, the band included 2 great singers and featured various different solo instrumentals during the evening. Following 3 encores and a standing ovation, Heather McElvey, HAH volunteer, thanked them all for putting on such a great evenings entertainment and said We were delighted that the band came to Sucina this year. Their performance was rst class and enjoyed by so many people who dont often have the opportunity to see a big band performing live in our area. Not only was there a fantastic turnout, but we raised almost 600 for HAH on the evening. We were extremely proud that the band chose HAH and look forward to welcoming them back again next year.

Rojales Town Hall Supports EHCRC Foundation Rojales Town Hall has announced its full support to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation saying by working together they could boost local tourism. Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Perez Garca, accompanied by fellow councillors recently took up an invitation to visit the EHCRC. So impressed with the work they do, meetings have since been held between the Town Hall, and the three main hotels in the area to offer tourism packages for the ever increasing number of people enquiring about volunteering holidays and visits to the rescue centre. Derek Monks, councillor for Foreign Residents said the Town Hall was looking forward to a strong working relationship with EHCRC. Sue and Rod have so much vision about conservation of the countryside and there
is a lot of potential to attract more people and tourism. With 856 people unemployed in the municipality we are keen to look at new ways to increase tourism and jobs.

Beetle Drive on Friday 28th June at Luis Lounge, Camping Las Encinas, San Javier. 44 people attended and enjoyed a sh and chips lunch before embarking on the Beetle Drive. There were 8 games and the winners were Pat Astbury and Brian Bourdon, each on 86 points, while David Sykes won the wooden spoon with only 26 points.

Hi all, its Shannon here again and Im going to tell you about a Noel Richards concert that took place in our garden. Dad had to go and collect Noel from Alicante; well Elche really, leaving Mum, Connor and I at home to prepare all the food. Nathan went with Dad to give him the directions. Apparently, they got a bit lost and went round the same roundabout a few times before nally nding the right way. The concert was on a Friday evening and Noel came to stay with us Friday afternoon, so there was not too much time to practise. Mum and I spent the whole morning preparing the food for the evening. We had chicken curry, beef chilli and a spicy vegetarian option, all served with boiled potatoes. Connor joined us when we had to peel all the potatoes - two huge bags of them! Mum peeled, I cut and Connor made sure the pans were full of water and Simon the pig was given all the peelings! He enjoyed that. When Dad and Nathan got back with Noel we all had lunch together and then we set the garden up for everyone. We had tables and
Declares and You Laid Aside Your Majesty and then he launched into some brand new ones. Mum had printed out a song book of all the songs he was going to sing, so we could all sing along with Noel. Someone kept singing slightly different words and Noel said that he had not written it like that, but everyone sang it that other way, so maybe he should re-write that particular song! He was funny. We had an interval just in time for Mum to nd out how Andy Murray was doing in the semi nal at Wimbledon! Some people had been asking, so Mum announced it over the microphone. Noel didnt mind! We ate all the food; there was nothing left and then Noel sang again, with an encore. chairs all over the place and sun shades up so folk were not too hot. We put y swatters on every table poor ies and Mums new idea for drink covers! The concert started at 7pm and by then we had over 50 people in the garden. More arrived just after 7, so we had a full concert. Noel was brilliant. He has a really good voice and is amazing on the guitar. He few of his older songs, like All Heaven Everyone had a great time, I know I did. After the concert Noel was asked to teach someone the guitar, so a quick guitar lesson took place! After everyone had gone home it was almost midnight. We washed all the dishes, but left the garden until the morning, as it was dark outside. Noel, Dad and Mum sat up chatting for ages. It was a brilliant time and I hope he comes back again soon.
Ups and downs here this month. Its been extremely busy with the new shop, some new arrivals and new contacts made. We have collected a donkey and a Shetland pony from the perrera in Murcia. They were due to be put to sleep to create space. There are also 3 horses there and we are in negotiations with the perrera to get them out too. The two we managed to get out went straight up to the hospital in Alicante for treatment and castration, which cost nearly
1,000! The pony had been hoofed and bitten by the horse he was put in with and we think this caused damage to both his back legs as he had to have operations on his knee-caps. While we were there we also arranged adoption of 4 dogs - two maltese/bichon crosses, one boxer and a terrier type puppy who were all scheduled for sacrice (as they so lovingly call it!). Ana, the terrier type,
was adopted almost immediately, but had to be returned to us after she developed symptoms of Parvovirus. She went straight into the vets and was there for a few days and is now recovering well at home. Unfortunately she passed the Parvo on to one of the pups, little Marky, who sadly died. The other pups have been given injections to boost their immune system so hopefully they will be ok.
The new shop is doing well, but we are struggling for staff in both Mazarrn and Fuente Alamo, so if you are able to give us just four hours of your time per week/fortnight/month, please get in touch! Sometimes things just work out well. Even when there really isnt anything we are aware of that we have done to make it happen. Sometimes timing is just right from the car pulling out of a space at the car-park right in front of you, to the extra kiosk opening as you approach the long queues at the Mercadona. It is not always like this of course; there are as many instances when this just does not happen. There are times when we can basically feel blessed, yes Blessed, ie in receipt of special treatment or favour. Wouldnt it be good if we could keep this going? How much easier life would be? The word Bless is rather over-used these days, most often as a condescending reference to someones behaviour. I am not going to pretend that if you become a Christian you will experience these random blessings more often. That would be unrealistic. In fact there are many pressures in the
Christian life which people who are not Christians do not experience. Beyond the mundane level of blessing in the above examples, there are the Christian blessings of a completely different nature; the presence of God in your life; an understanding of how God does things and how He relates to us; knowing that Jesus came and died in our place; the day to day work of the Holy Spirit in your life; the Bible to guide and teach us; Heaven to look forward to; knowing that God loves you. Psalm 32 says Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit. Insect Plagues Rife This Summer Due To Wet Spring Late spring rain means more mosquitoes, ies, wasps and cockroaches around this summer, according to Rentokil. These unpleasant creatures are always rife at this time of year since it is the height of their annual biological cycle, but around 30% more than usual are expected across Spain over the next few months, the rm claims. Rainfall in May and June has left numerous water pockets in marshlands, which is where such insects tend to nest and produce their larvae and town councils have cut back on their budgets for pest control, particularly for rats and cockroaches, due to the nancial crisis, Rentokil explains. The company says local governments have not invested enough to keep swarms of insects and rodents at bay. Cockroaches are set to produce the worst pest problem, say experts. These live in drainpipes, which is how they manage to get into houses and other buildings, meaning the best way to keep them out is to seal off any holes that lead to downpipes. Three main types of cockroach exist in southern Europe, the main one, curiously, called the American Cockroach which is large and reddish in colour and highly prevalent in Mediterranean countries. The Oriental Cockroach is black in colour and the third type is known as the Germanic or Coffee Cockroach since they are most typically found in bars, restaurants and cafs. International Monetary Fund Tells Spain To Relax Credit Rules Spain has been strongly advised by the International Monetary Fund (FMI) to lift its restrictions on credit to small businesses and potential property-owners in a bid to aid economic recovery. The global entity, led by Christine Lagarde, has called for Spains banks to restrict dividend payments in cash to its shareholders only, to build up their capital and to ensure nance ows in the national economy to help businesses recover and individuals buy from the massive stock of unoccupied properties Spain has on its books at rock-bottom prices. Experts say the housing market will not pick up until the hundreds of thousands of unsold homes are purchased. Would-be buyers need mortgages and companies seeking to invest in property also need loans. The board says lack of available credit is sinking the countrys economy. They recommend paying part of staffs wages or bonuses in shares, since this will encourage them to work actively for the success of the business. The FMI says banks should be made to bear their own costs if their shares have plummeted, rather than expecting sharehold-
ers to lose most of their investment. It has praised plans within the nancial reform to ensure suppliers are paid off as quickly as possible, since this will improve their solvency. They say the Spanish economy will shrink by a further 1.6% this year and will stay on an even keel next year, with zero growth but no reduction. Gibraltar Celebrates 300 Years Of British Reign British sovereignty of Gibraltar is now 300 years old and the ongoing tug-of-war between the UK and Spain over the Rock has never relented in that time. On July 13th 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht was signed in which the Kingdom of Spain ceded Gibraltar to Great Britain, a move that the Spanish authorities still call today an historic mistake. Spain wants the Rock to be returned to its Crown and form part of the southern region of Andaluca, as it was 300 years ago when Article 10 of the Treaty was signed to end the Spanish War of Secession. Taking over the Rock gave the UK and Holland a strategic point for setting up military bases and maintaining control over trading routes by sea and a Naval base remains there today. Mayor of Algeciras (Cdiz), the Province which the Rock would rightfully belong to if Spain claimed it back, Jos Ignacio Landaluce, says the Spanish government will not relent in its efforts to reclaim Gibraltar and adds that the country has the support of United Nations in this respect. The Prime Minister of Gibraltar, Fabin Picardo, has always said, since taking up ofce 18 months ago, that he will never hand the Rock over to Spain not a single grain of sand or drop of water of it. The new freedom of movement between the Rock and mainland Spain means that some 7,000 people living in the latter commute daily across the border to the Rock for work. Unemployment in Gibraltar is just 3%, compared to 26.9% in Spain. The average income per head in Gibraltar is more than double that of Spain. Plan PIVE Scrapping Causes Panic-Buying Of New Cars New car sales have rocketed on the eve of the scrap for cash scheme being axed. The Plan PIVE allowed owners to trade in their old cars over seven years of age, or newer ones declared total losses, for scrap metal in exchange for a generous discount on the price of a brand-new vehicle. This scheme gave the motor trade a massive boost across the country, with 34,000 cars bought straight off the forecourt in the rst two weeks of July an increase of 25.4% on the same month in 2012. Dealership and franchise associations GANVAM and Faconauto say deliveries of new cars to private individuals, rather than companies, topped 17,000 in the rst fortnight of July some 45% more than in the same period last year and car-hire rms bought 9,400 vehicles 31% more than in July 2012. Large rms buying new vehicles as
pool cars or company cars were among the minority, say the two groups, with fewer than 8,000 sold, or a 9% drop on last years gures. GANVAM and Faconauto say these statistics are due to panic-buying as owners with cars that have no saleable value as a driveable vehicle seek to capitalise on the last few days of the Plan PIVE. Until this plan was launched, scrapyards paid far less for old or undriveable cars and in most cases, the owner was forced to pay a fee for their vehicle to be picked up by the authorities and disposed of. This has always led to a high number of abandoned cars in towns and on country roads, with many town councils cracking down by considering any vehicle that had been parked in a public space for a month or more to have been dumped and the owner subject to a ne and people who were unable to drive for long periods having to arrange for someone else to move their car periodically to avoid this. The Plan PIVE meant car-owners could benet from discounts of up to 3,000 for trading in their old vehicles as scrap, but the scheme was due for the chop at the end of July. Geriatricians Call For Benets And State Help For Parents Elderly people should not be looking after young children full-time, because they are neither physically nor psychologically up to it, say geriatricians. Doctors at Valencias hospital, Casa de Salud, say the economic crisis is responsible for parents having to work much longer hours when they can nd jobs and their wages are not enough to pay for childcare a situation that is forcing them to effectively leave their own parents to bring up their children and with the average childbearing age rising, by the time grandparents have to take on the burden of care, they are often very old and not in the best of health. Specialist geriatrician Dr Fermn Garca says It should not be the case that societys oldest residents have to look after young children when they are no longer physically or mentally able to do so. Society needs to adapt to the changing population pyramid and to the needs of the elderly, children, and parents. It should be society and public policies that provide support, so that it is the parents themselves who look after their own children, as is the case in Northern European countries. In these countries, mechanisms are in place to encourage people to have children, much longer maternity leave, nancial incentives, exible working hours and necessary childcare leave, legal protection at work for parents, social facilities and many other factors that enable mothers and fathers to look after their own children and not leave it up to the grandparents, Dr Garca states. He says the elderly are a forgotten age in Spanish society and are frequently dismissed. Todays society is all about youth, beauty and all thats productive and the value of elderly people, their experience of life and intellectual baggage, is ignored. The practice of geriatric care is to keep elderly people as independent as possible towards the end of their lives so that they can do as much for themselves as is feasible and enjoy a greater quality of life. We need the governments to invest more resources into their care and adapt their policies to benet this large and rapidly-growing sector of the population.

Make sure you Drive Alive! Drive on the right! This information is not only for holiday makers, but for everyone who drives out here in Spain. We can all be guilty of lack of concentration at times, so be especially careful when setting off from service stations or restaurants on the left side of the road. Many drivers do not leave sufcient space between them and the car in front. Take care when overtaking - allow more space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the road ahead. Drink Driving Spain has strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood. This is stricter than the UK where the limit is 0.8. Here in Spain, new drivers are effectively forbidden to drink and drive, with a very low 0.1 mg/l limit. The best policy is not to drink any alcohol if you are driving. Some of the bars offer transport to and from their location, so take advantage of this and you will not be in danger of breaking the law. That one drink might put you over the limit as everyone is affected differently to alcohol and the readings on the breathalyser can also vary. A person who is found driving a motor vehicle under the inuence of toxic drugs or alcoholic beverages can be sentenced to imprisonment from three to eight months or issued with a ne and in all cases, a driving licence ban from one to four years. In a case recently, someone was found to be over the limit, but after the 2nd test it was negative. Had this been positive he would have been given a 500 ne and 3 points on his licence. Drink-driving urban myths One in 10 drivers who have had too much to drink before driving have tried dubious techniques to sober up, including chewing coffee-beans and grass and even licking mobile phone batteries. Those most likely to put these into practice were found to be men aged between 18 and 29 who, if they drive when drunk, freely admit to it and often
use other gadgets to avoid being caught for motoring offences, such as speed-camera detectors. Lnea Directa carried out an experiment with a man and a woman, both aged 37, who drank half a pint of beer, a generous glass of wine and a well-laced whiskey and Coca-Cola after a light meal. They practised each of the tricks to sober up, but their breathalysing readings, which were over 0.25, did not change with any of them. Two in three drivers interviewed believed breathalysing was merely another way of getting money for the government from the taxpayer and over a third were suspicious about the accuracy of breath test. Two in three did not know what the drink-driving limit is and only 6% knew that once the reading passes 0.6 milligrams per litre, the driver is considered to have committed a criminal, rather than civil offence and could face jail. According to the National Toxicology Institute, 35% of drivers killed in accidents were over the limit and of these, 70% had exceeded the 0.6 criminal cut-off point. A study by motor insurer Lnea Directa says these urban myths do not make any difference and that the only way to avoid a positive breathalysing reading is simply do not drink and drive. Seat belts - front and rear are obligatory everywhere. Roundabouts - when approaching a roundabout give way to trafc already on the roundabout, on your left, unless signed otherwise. You will also notice that the Spanish tend to drive in the outside lane of a roundabout, even when intending to take the last exit of it! Driving Licences - Minimum age for driving, provided you hold a full UK licence, is 18 for a car and for a motorcycle over 75cc. If youve got an old-style all-green licence you might nd the police will not understand them, so either get them updated or take an International Driving Permit as well. If your licence does not incorporate a photograph ensure you carry your passport to validate the licence. If the vehicle is not registered in your name, carry a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to drive. If you are a resident here in Spain you should ob-
tain a Spanish driving licence. Speed limits are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequently used and remember, speeding and other trafc offences are subject to on-the-spot nes. Speed traps can be xed in boxes at the side of the road, cameras over the road, or an unmarked car with a camera.

Beware in Spain - The law operating in Spain regarding the use of indicators on motorways is being strictly enforced. You risk being ned for not indicating before overtaking and again before pulling back to the nearside lane after overtaking. Also, ensure you do not cross the solid white line as you enter the motorway from a slip road, but wait until the line is broken. Children in cars - Children under 12 cannot travel in the front unless using a suitably adapted restraint system. In the rear, passengers under 135cm must use specially adapted safety devices and restraints. Documentation - always carry your driving licence, vehicle registration document (V5), and certicate of motor insurance. Fines - On the spot nes are issued. Ensure an ofcial receipt is issued by the ofcer collecting the ne. Some nes are reduced if paid within a specied time. Driver Special We would like to encourage bars and restaurants to offer special drinks for the nominated driver. Most places can offer soft drinks, water or non-alcoholic beers, but how about making special alcohol-free cocktails for a change? These would make it more encouraging for the driver to steer clear of alcoholic drinks and of course it would ensure that the party had a safe journey home. Registered Charity N 8.714/1 June and July were successful months rescuing and re-homing abandoned puppies and three more of our older dogs that have been in kennels over two years, Teddy, Oscar and Josh went to Holland for re-homing. Two more abandoned puppies, Whisky and Chilli, were rescued and are now in one of our foster homes waiting to go to Holland.
We rescue abandoned puppies in the Mazarrn area and care for them in foster homes where they can be trained and socialised whilst we are nding them a loving forever home locally or abroad. To be successful in our work we are always in need of foster carers. We pay for all vaccinations and veterinary costs and give you support whenever you need it. If you feel you can offer a place in your home and your heart for one of our rescued puppies short or long term as a family pet or companion please talk to us about our Foster Charter.
To help us raise the funds needed for our work we are dependent on public support and generosity. We thank Audrey Taylor for the recent donation she kindly made to us in memory of her husband. I had the last week of June off as my sisters arrived for their annual visit and as usual had the challenge of how to entertain them! We always try and look for something a little bit different and this year we certainly achieved it by attending the down-hill mountain biking at La Mariposa/Espua Adventure. The description of this activity does not do it justice; it was an amazing experience. You are taken by vehicle and trailer to what must be just about the highest point in the mountains and then using the forestry tracks, you free-wheel all the way down, some 25 kilometres in total. My younger sister has not been on a bike for over 30 years and was naturally nervous, but she loved it. You get to see some beautiful scenery, wild life and followed by an excellent 4 course Menu del Dia at the hotel. As with all Espua Adventure activities, safety is of paramount
importance and you do feel very comfortable with help and expertise on hand. This really is a trip for anyone to try. If you want to do some actual peddling, you can opt to do the last few kilometres by taking the road back rather than the vehicle. This activity is denitely recommended! Fortunately for Kevin (as it rained on the 9th of July) he had decided on a birthday lunch this year rather than his usual barbeque, so we decided on Restaurante Maria Josefa in El Pareton. Here you will nd one of the best Menu del Dias on offer in the region with a genuine 4 course meal with drinks & coffee included for only 10. There was also a delicious frozen lemon chopito to follow. Maria will always be pleased to accommodate large groups and if you have a special occasion she can even reserve a whole room for you and is very exible with the menu. For example I asked her to add langoustines to the salad starter which were wonderful and only cost us an extra 2 per head. Her gazpacho is legendary and must be one of the tastiest on offer in the area. We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful area with so much scenery, and I would defy any visitor to say they are not impressed with El Faro in Puerto de Mazarrn. This hostelry is only open from mid-June until the end of September and offers drinks and ice creams with a real focus on cocktails. You can watch the sun set over the port and then wait half an hour and you will see it all lit up - it is amazing. If you have not been there then you simply must try it. Pedro and the team will always give you a very warm welcome. In my experience most visitors on holiday tend to prefer dressing up in the evening and going out for dinner, so where better to go than Restaurante La Chara in Isla Plana for Menu del Noche. This restaurant must have one of the most extensive menus around; with so much choice it is difcult to decide what to eat! They also have tables outside on the terrace and with a lovely sea breeze it is another place that really should be visited during the next few weeks. I had been intending to go to one of the special music nights at The Bistro Bulgaria on Condado de Alhama for ages, so when Martine suggested one as a girls night out I immediately said yes. During the summer, these events are held outside on the terrace which is a lovely setting. We were entertained by Angels Instead aka Kieran who does an excellent Robbie Williams Tribute. We enjoyed a 3 course meal and a few drinks for a very reasonable price and we took advantage of the free bus service from Puerto de Mazarrn, Mazarrn Country Club and Camposol, which meant no-one had to drive. Bad Health Habits for Women Wearing Heels More and more of women are opting to wear heels on a daily basis, and this could be bad news for their health. High heels affect posture, putting pressure on joints that can lead to a range of conditions including arthritis, hammer toes, back pain and tendon injuries and thats before you take into account any heel-related accidents! To minimise damage, limit heels to 1.5 inches for daily wear, and wear insoles to help reduce the pressure on joints. Carrying A Heavy Handbag With the rising number of gadgets and accessories the majority of women haul around, many are carrying around several pounds of weight on their shoulders every day. As a result, lots of us are also putting our long term health at risk. While you may not feel the effects right now, carrying around a heavy handbag can lead to serious back problems and neck pain as well as poor posture. Dont wait until the damage is done do your health a favour and try clearing out all nonessential items and switching to a smaller bag.

Rather than letting your waistline suffer next time youre feeling blue, try distracting yourself from cravings by doing something you enjoy, or boost your endorphins and health with an uplifting workout. Not Getting Enough Sleep Not only can lack of sleep make us look and feel our worst, but insufcient sleep can also lead to increased accidents, calorie consumption and heart disease risk. Unluckily for women, statistics suggest that sleep problems affect more women than men, while one study found that women are more than twice as likely to give up sleep to care for others. Unfortunately, sleep has been found to affect womens blood pressure and mood more than mens, making it imperative that you do your best to get a good nights sleep. Putting Themselves Last Not only are women more likely to compromise their sleeping habits to care for children and others, they are also prone to putting their own wants and needs at the bottom of a hectic to-do list of chores and obligations. To avoid running yourself into the ground, learn to sometimes say no to those requests and commitments that are less than essential, and make sure you set aside some me time each week to do something enjoyable just for you. Diagnosing most illnesses early increases rates of survival, so men, stop ignoring those symptoms and give your doctor a call. Not Doing Self-Checks Many men avoid doing necessary health self-checks due to fear, denial of the risks, or confusion over what to do. It is vital that men check themselves regularly for signs of testicular cancer, as incidence of the disease is on the rise, particularly in young and middle-aged men. If you are not sure how to go about checking yourself, visit a reputable website or ask your doctor for tips on performing these necessary checks. Bottling Things Up Men are less likely than women to talk about their feelings, express emotion or ask for help and support. Perhaps as a consequence of this, men are half as likely to be diagnosed with depression, yet are 77% more likely to commit suicide. Depressed men are also twice as likely as depressed women to resort to alcohol and drug abuse. Bottling up anger is just as detrimental to mens health, with research suggesting that men who dont express their anger increase their risk of a heart attack. Stressing Over Work While men and women are equally exposed to workplace stress, men are four times more likely than women to take a sick day due to work related stress and are twice as likely to turn to alcohol to help deal with it. As workplace stress can be an important factor in the development of depression, heart disease and stroke, it is vital to seek a way to resolve your feelings and ease your stress; whether it is by talking to your boss, changing your job or seeking professional help.

Leaving makeup on overnight, along with the dirt and oil that naturally accumulates on skin throughout the day, is a quick route to clogged pores, congested skin and spots. Sleeping with mascara and eye makeup on can also affect your health by causing eye irritation, bloodshot eyes or even infection. Take those few minutes to clean off the makeup before going to bed. Hi from Bob with the latest news from Welcome. First, though, hasnt the weather been glorious; not just here, but back in the UK as well. The Puerto De Mazarrn is buzzing too, with all the summer visitors, and the beach is just row after row of parasols, until 2pm, when everybody heads to the bars for their menu del dia. Its nice to see that where we live is still as popular as ever, and long may it continue, as the summer visitors bring much needed revenue to keep the businesses going that we rely on all year round. We had our annual Summer Ball on 26th June at La Cumbre Hotel and what a fantastic night it was. The function room must be the best in this area and looked fabulous; crisp white tablecloths, shiny cutlery, spotless plates; everything faultless. There was a champagne reception before we were shown to our tables, followed by a sumptuous banquet served by

Physical Therapy and Speech Therapy Service Murciano Health Service The Governing Council has given its approval to the Ministry of Health and Social Policy, through Murcia Health Service (SMS), for an initial amount of 15,544,387 for the management of public service physiotherapy and speech therapy for the next four years. This will be divided into several batches, to coincide with the locations where they must provide the service; a total of 25 physiotherapy centres and 5 speech therapy centres. This will modify the current physiotherapy centres in places like Alcantarilla, Bullas, Jumilla, Las Torres de Cotillas and Puerto Lumbreras. It also reduces the number of centres in Murcia, which went from ve to four, due to the decrease in referrals of Area I, and Cartagena, which will go to two, compared to the current three. Af-
ter the opening of the Hospital Saint Lucia there has been a decrease in the need for assistance in this area. There will be no changes in the distribution of physiotherapy centres in Aguilas, Alhama de Murcia, Murcia, Calasparra, Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegn, Fortuna, Fuente Alamo, Lorca, Mazarrn, Molina de Segura, Santomera, Totana and Yecla. They also kept the ve existing speech therapy centres in Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, Caravaca de la Cruz and Yecla. More Than 2.3 Million Euros For The Acquisition Of Material Regional Blood Donation Centre The Governing Council has given the green light to an investment of the Health and Social Policy to acquire over the next two years material for the Regional Centre of Blood Donation. The lots to be acquired are pockets to keep platelets for at least ve days, additive solution for storage, disposable equipment for obtaining automated ltered platelet mixtures, equipment for sealing sterile tubes, disposable equipment for determining haemoglobin and equipment for extraction systems of mononuclear cells. Agreement To Expand The Supply Of Broadband Services and Fixed Telephones In The Region The regional government has approved an agreement between the Ministry of Economy and Finance and Systems Company Aplinfo SL to facilitate the expansion of the supply of advanced telecommunications services in the Region of Murcia. The company will undertake the implementation of certain infrastructure and facilities, allowing everyone to receive broadband services and xed telephones in a larger number of areas of the region. This will be done from the centres of Regional Network sites of Community Telecommunications, using its technology. Hopefully this will give the possibility of providing broadband services in rural areas. Deciding The Location Of The Osborne Bull In The Region The Governing Council has been informed of the constitution of a technical committee to coordinate work to promote the most appropriate site in the regional for the installation of the legendary Osborne Bull silhouette. The commission will be composed of technical staff from the Departments of Presidency, Culture and Tourism and Public Works and Planning and Osborne Group, with the aim of evaluating the proposed sites for the placement of a silhouette of the renowned bull in the Region for the year 2014. They will visit publicly owned land offered by the municipalities of Blanca, Ulea, La Union, Cartagena and Murcia to evaluate their proposals. Almost 273,000 For Early Intervention Services In Aguilas, Alhama de Murcia and Yecla The City of Aguilas will receive 98,186,
Alhama de Murcia 42,120, and Yecla 132.111 for the care of children up to six years of age with therapeutic needs, temporary or permanent, caused by limitations, alterations in their development or risk of suffering. The aim is to continue offering these three localities in the prevention, detection and diagnosis and therapeutic intervention. It also includes sensory stimulation, motor and cognitive, motor, speech therapy and hearing, as well as family counselling and social environment. Community support of more than 3.5 million Euros ensures a total of 28 early intervention centres, which each year are available for about 3,500 users. Of the centres, 16 belong to local corporations and other associations that serve people with disabilities. Besides the three municipalities, these services subsidise the municipalities of Alcantarilla, Murcia, Fortuna, Totana, Las Torres de Cotillas, Molina de Segura, Blanca, Cieza, Lorca, Abarn, Mazarrn and Puerto Lumbreras, and the Commonwealth of Social Services for Mula River, which includes the municipalities of Albudeite, Bullas, Mula and Pliego. The Community also has collaboration agreements with federations of people with disabilities in the Region of Murcia, allowing Aideman associations, Aspajunide, ASPANPAL, Ananda, APANDIS, APCOM, ASSIDO CARTAGENA & MURCIA, ASTUS, Astrada, ASTRAPACE and Prometheus to provide this service in the region. 120,000 To Strengthen and Preserve The Remains Of The Site Of La Bastida in Totana With a grant from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism the Autonomous University Barcelona will help to begin the work of strengthening the walls and conserving of the archaeological site of La Bastida Argrico in Totana. 70,000 will be for the tasks of preventive protection, consolidation and conservation of archaeological nds, residential and funerary structures located in different areas of the site. There will also be conservation work to access structures that are part of the routes currently preserved, which have been prepared for the preservation of property, monitoring the ndings discovered during the excavations carried out between 2009 and 2012. The remaining 50,000 will be used for protection work in the new area excavated and the walls and towers of the city walls. Following the work done between 2009 and 2012, La Bastida has become an archaeological site of exceptional importance in the scientic, educational, cultural and tourist centre. The regional governments goal is to create an archaeological park that constitutes an international reference for the development of scientic knowledge and dissemination of heritage, in addition to enhancing tourism in the region.

Mazarrn Festival de Baile 2013 ~ A Huge Success MFDB 2013 would like to thank everyone for venturing down to the MFDB 2013 event at the Hotel Playa Grande on the 29th and 30th June; a fantastic event for 60 dancers, 100 spectators, 25 volunteers and sponsors having been inspired through the beautiful art form of dance.

MFDB Social Event Programmed by Susie Long, supported by Fiesta Faces with tattoo body art for all the participants and music by Albatros DJ, it was an opportunity for everyone to dress up and get together before the awards. It was a celebration of all the commitment and enthusiasm made by everyone in the lead up to the event and over the weekend. MFDB Awards The awards were the highlight of the weekend. All participants received certicates and medals for their dedication and commitment, not only to the festival, but to the dance training they take part in with their teachers throughout the year.

Dance Workshops Different styles of dance were led by teachers from the Julie Bruce Dance Academy, Broadway Dance and Murcia for all MFDB participants. Styles included Jazz, Musical Theatre and Street. A special mention to student teacher, Charlotte Sweet of the Julie Bruce Dance Academy, for running an excellent workshop and also Julie Bruce for encouraging professional teacher training of her older dancers within her school. Competition All dance schools have raised the quality of their dance work this year, meeting one of MFDB key aims. Murcia Dance has participated in the event for the 4th year running, with Broadway Dance and The Julie Bruce Dance Academy participating for the 2nd year running. It was fantastic to see the dancers

With the hottest weeks nearly over, its timely to start to prepare, at least mentally, to grow and eat more from the garden or apartment terrace. What can be grown even in a small space are fruit, vegetables, herbs and meat and you can do so ecologically from day one and avoid residual chemicals on the surface or in the esh. Now is a good time to start or expand production as harvests can be before or for Christmas. The rst autumn/winter crops you can sow now. They include broccoli and cabbages, onions and leeks, plus climbing butter and haricot beans. At any time you can purchase a young turkey or cockerel to fatten for the Christmas table on kitchen scraps. We started to grow vegetables on a small scale just growing a few favourites not available from the village, then when local agriculturalists started to use large quantities of chemicals and later leave the land in droves to become builders, we expanded our production to be largely self-sufficient. Likewise with fruits; the few fruit trees that tted into a cottage-style garden were expanded into a small orchard and we took over an abandoned olive grove. Growing
In expanding our productions we started to look more and more at what constituted good eating and which were the most benecial fruits, vegetables, herbs, tree-leaves etc. Eventually we collated the collected information as the book now just available from Amazon Books. The title is Living Well From Our Garden Mediterranean Style. The book follows the wellness aspects of the history of our garden including mental, physical, gastronomic and economic health. It includes a novel self-audit of how well you eat today. All is possible and the time can be found by taking less trips to the supermarkets and a determination to live well. You can nd LItaliana off the old Murcia Road going into Caravaca coming along the tree-lined road past Lidl. Follow the road into Caravaca and just past the set of trafc lights before you get to the Gran Via, take a left turn. LItaliana is just on the lefthand side of the road you can see it from the main road. There are a few tables outside the bar/restaurant. LItaliana is open from midday until late, serving tapas and drink all day with the main restaurant open from 2pm for pizzas and in the evenings from 8pm. Here you can see Mario making his famous pizzas in very comfortable surroundings. They also serve excellent pasta dishes such as spaghetti, macaroni and lasagne and of course your favourite Ital-

In the month of June we enjoyed three short, but interesting walks. The rst was an evening walk when 12 of us walked between the Sierra Qupar and the Sierra de las Cabras near Cehegn. Although there was a little uphill climb, the views certainly made it worth while. Afterwards, we went to a local bar in Cehegn for a cooling beer or two.
The second walk was an early morning outing when 13 of us met at 8am to walk 10kms in the forest of Burete near Cehegn. Afterwards we went to a local bar for a healthy breakfast of fresh orange juice and sausage sandwiches! We nished our walking season with another evening walk, this time in the Moratalla area and led by one of our Spanish members. He had this to say about the walk, We started the last walk along the Alharabe River with a good mood as usual
with the group of WARM. We knew it would be pleasant despite the high temperatures, because we were walking in the shade of the pines and feeling most of the time the coolness of the natural river water, enjoying this amazing forest river, one of the best in the Region of Murcia. For the more adventurous, we had the opportunity to swim in the natural thermal pool of Somogil that is situated in the Hondares ravine. We nished the route with some tapas in the Camping restaurant which offered us a good service.

CHRONIC HIGH EXCURSION Alhrabe This insatiable walkers group met again to whet their appetite for adventure and with new partners, we went in search of the most vivid of our landscape, the Alharabe River. Remotando started the course in a modern motorcade, with an important stop to see past organisms in petried rocks formed from accumulations of Ammonites, probably Eocene.

We arrived at our starting point, el Bancal de la Carrasca, and from here we climbed for a few hours to the best mountain river in the region, visiting the Pozo de los Azules rst. We heard the background noise of the waterfall that falls into the pit of crystal clear waters where the river bed is rocky. There are small accumulations of sediment where many plants grow, including new orchids and other species. The spectacle of Alhrabe at this time of year, and in this particular section, is of such beauty, that our cameras were in action repeatedly. We jumped from stone to stone, while wrens, nightingales and robins
Occasionally we abandoned the bedrock and traced our way down the slope seizing a bridge of rock to place a rope to help prevent slips and a dip in the cool waters. Occasionally we were surrounded by a rocky escarpment on the edge which elevated us to enjoy an overhead view of the river and the forest of Aleppo pines. We stopped to regain our strength and to carry out an experiment, analyzing the water quality of the river. Our two budding scientists, Manolo and Irene helped Cristina. The result was excellent, although the search for aquatic macroinvertebrates is not as diverse as we would have liked, but the truth is that we are in a place of
The river started to open out and we saw various wildowers in a spectacular red rocky outcrop. How small it feels in a place like this! Following the shelf, we had access to some old folds that indicated strong farming in the past. We saw a pair of Paloma Zurita (Columba oenas), which are extremely scarce species in the region. From the terrace where we were, we admired the magnicent scenery that rises across the river. We looked for fossils of the Nerinea gigantea era that inhabited the ancient Tethys Sea. We then began our return, which took us across the river by an old wooden bridge, still enjoying lots of owers and a huge Oak or Holm oak. We arrived at the cars and headed to Restaurante La Plaza, where we had a spectacular meal with wine from La Tertia de Ulea. We had a surprise when Irene appeared dressed in dance attire and gave us a demonstration.

Calasparra has two museums which we would recommend as worthwhile visiting. The rst is The Archaeological Museum, itself housed in a magnicent building known as La Encomienda, which was built as a grain store between 1730 and 1731 for the Order of St John of Jerusalem, who controlled the administration of the Calasparra area until the mid-19th Century. The public entrance is on the other side of the building from the Calle Mayor, around the corner from the church and through an alleyway into the Plaza de los Templarios. The museum covers Calasparras history from prehistoric times to the early Middle Ages, plus a unique geological collection on the top oor. known as the Villa Vieja. You will see a large tinaja (earthenware jar) from the 13th century, as well as one of the most prized nds, a decorated double-handled vase the jarra esgraada also from that century. Other display cases contain various cooking pots, basins, jugs, plates and crockery and there are also smaller, more personal items such as rings, needles, bone buttons, a jabali tooth (presumably from a necklace), arrow heads, a key, fragments of glass, bronze thimbles, and an iron shovel. At the end of the room there is a display of coins covering the period from the Christian Reconquest (12th Century onwards) as well as some Arab coins from the 9th Century, although these are not from the local area. In the rst arched room, there are numerous remains from the Stone Age (Palaeolithic) up to Roman times. Among exhibits found locally and dating from the Middle Palaeolithic are various knife-like tools and scrapers. From Neolithic times there are scrapers, arrow heads, an axe, the tooth of a wild boar (jabali), fragments of pottery, knives, a hand grinder for grain and idols/small gures. The Argars (a civilisation found in this part of Spain in the second millennium BC) have bequeathed vases, a necklace of shells and bones, a large axe and a strikingly large burial pot. From the Iberians, immediately before the Roman invasion, there are weaving weights, bronze buttons, a knife and various parts of lances on show. The area has rich Roman remains and the museum has a variety of relevant exhibits a large dolia (clay jug), an amphora, various weights, necklace beads, rings, a bronzed jug, votive gures, small metal bells, a fragment of a herringbone (opus spicatum) mosaic oor, and even a medical instrument! There is also a separate case of Roman coins, many from unknown locations but some from near Calasparra and a Roman sundial. The next oor is given over to a very important part of Calasparras heritage the 12th and 13th Century Arab settlement nearby The top oor contains something entirely different a collection of rocks, minerals and fossils. The items displayed in the room are from all over the world though there are some local examples. The rst two cases begin from about 550 million years ago with numerous fossils, especially of trilobites. Further cases bring the earths story to more recent times, with a whole host of other fossils including a dinosaur (Hadrosaurus) bone, a mammoth bone and a relatively modern horse tooth (only about 2 million years old!). Finally, there is a display of a wide variety of mineral samples from Murcia, Spain and around the world. The Rice Museum, which reects Calasparras international fame for its rice, is our second recommendation. When we visited it in September 2012, entry (as at the Archaeological Museum) cost the princely amount of 1! The Rice Museum is also housed in an historic building, the Casa Granero, constructed in 1808. It is situated near the top end of the Calle Mayor, on the other side from the Tourist Ofce, off an entrance area to what would once have been an impressive house and courtyard. Some knowledge of Spanish is useful, as there is virtually nothing in English. Even so, much is purely visual and even if you do not speak Spanish, the visit should nevertheless be thoroughly enjoyable.
The rst room contains a variety of large posters about rice growing and harvesting, and about the ora and fauna in this part of the Segura Valley and the surrounding hills. Two main varieties of rice are grown Bomba (perhaps the most famous) and Balilla. They are not cheap, but this is because of the nature of their cultivation which is said to be totally organic, assisted by the purity of the river water in the area. Other factors are said to help, including the climate, the maintenance of a traditional seed stock and the slow maturation of the grain. We were told that one result of all of this was that there was no need to advertise Calasparra Rice and the entire crop was sold well in advance of it being harvested. Like wines, it has its own Denominacin de Origen, being the rst rice in the world to have such a label (1986). The following room concentrates on gastronomy and the dishes in which rice is used. One large explanatory poster details the host of vitamins it contains. In a third room is an old machine which was used to separate the rice from the chaff. It was made by John Baker Ltd of Wisbech! There are also photographs of what local rice is used for, including the giant arroz con conejo (rabbit) paella which feeds 3000 at Calasparras July esta. The top oor exhibits are rather more varied. Among items of old furniture were two cupboards made of apple wood which had proved to be immune through the ages to insect pests, especially woodworm. These had belonged to the Count of Calasparra. One of the cupboards contained items which were more typical of a poorer Calasparran household in the past and the other contents which would have graced richer premises. Among further striking exhibits was a brightly coloured water carrier with four large jars, which would once have been slung over a donkey or mule. The stained glass windows in this part of the building are also worth looking at closely, as each of them depicts a scene relevant to the rice heritage of Calasparra. The corridor to the nal display room on the top oor again had numerous examples of old, some restored, furniture, including a very striking walnut chair and a cherry wood display cupboard similar to those in apple wood on the oor below and a host of other antique items. Maybe I should keep this article for Easter. However, it is a good reminder for any time of the year. I was determined when we moved to Spain I would not make a rod for my own back as regards the garden. Even though I have managed to curtail many of my desires, (thats the trouble with being a gardener), I still seem to have too much to manage. I had seen my neighbours fence on which was a wonderful passion ower, reminding me of a prolic one that my parents grew on the front of their house. I decided I had to have one and I found a packet of seeds. They must be easy to grow in Spain I thought. Known here as Christs
Thorn, I was up for the challenge. Lo and behold I had one that survived out of the whole packet! This is its 3rd summer and its progress is very pleasing. When I look into the ower I remember just how awesome God is to have created such intricacy; its mind blowing. Of course theres a story behind this ower, The Passion of Christ. The ten petals and sepals represent the faithful apostles as Peter (the denier) and Judas (the betrayer). Everyone was missing at the time of the crucixion. The 3 stigmas represent the 3 nails; the 5 anther below them the 5 wounds from the nails and the lance; the radial laments, the crown of thorns and the ovary the hammer. Tendrils represent whips and spear shaped leaves the lance; blue and white colours heaven and purity. How good it is to look at Gods amazing creation and be reminded of His great Love and grace that He pours out on us no matter what time of the year it is. Lamentations 3:22-23. MARA is a small rescue association that is based in Mula. We have a charity shop in Calle Boticas which is proving to be a much needed source of being able to buy good quality clothes and items for people suffering from the austerity measures that we are all facing and at the same time raising the much needed funds to help the many abandoned animals that come our way. We also have a beautiful German Shepherd male of around 16 months and a gorgeous German Shepherd female of around 5 months who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves starving and left on the streets. Please help us to help those who cant help themselves.
One thing that we must really take care of are our eyes. There are of course opticians in the area, but like a lot of expats, most of us are not really up to speaking good enough Spanish to be condent in medical situations. Jo recently needed to get some new glasses and having seen the offer in Junes issue of the Costa Clida Chronicle at Multiopticas on Camposol she decided to have a new eye test. She also wanted her contact lenses checking as she wasnt happy with the last lenses that shed been given at her local optician. Mercedes and Val from Multiopticas are excellent. Mercedes is very thorough and her eye examination makes you feel very condent in her. She discovered that Jo had been given the wrong contact lenses and this was causing problems with her eyes. Mercedes ordered new glasses which arrived quickly. Jo had to wear the new glasses for a month without using her contact lenses. A check-up 4 weeks later showed the eye problem was nearly sorted and Jo can now go back to wearing contact lenses, which Mercedes had already ordered ready for Jo to try making sure they were the correct prescription. Jo said that Mercedes is the best opticians shes ever been to and would recommend her to anyone needing their eyes tested. Since then a number of satised friends have also been to Multiopticas. While they were on Camposol, Jo and her friends decided take advantage of a good selection of restaurants and went to Spice Villa on Camposol A, choosing their Early Bird Menu. The meal was great, with a wide choice and the portions are a good size (everyone struggled to nish their meals). The waiters are all very friendly and their service is excellent.

Free Nature Walks Cehegin provides a variety of landscapes which include woods, mountains, hills, sloping valleys, scrubland and streams. These natural habitats host ora and fauna of special interest which
provide a priceless tourist and educational resource. The walks take place on the last Saturday of each month. They are designed for people of all ages who enjoy hiking at fairly easy levels which makes them accessible for the whole family. The tourist walks are free and start at 9am. They are between 4 and 9km and take between 2 to 3 hours. On Saturday the 24th we will go to Casa del Prior (Sierra del Quipar) This circular route is ideal for beginners. The walk passes through pine trees and shrub land, etc and with a little luck we will see birds of prey, mountain goat, deer etc. The distance is 8km and the time will be approximately 3 hours with an average incline of 6,4%-6,8%. The 11th edition of the Begastri Lan Party will be held from the 2nd to the 4th of August and on the 3rd at night there is a dance music festival with Mxima Summer Party XXL 10-17th there will be organised walks from the Old Town, taking in tapas and swimming in the local swimming pool. This agreement is part of the programme of work and activities developed by the Ministry to strengthen the populations of these animals in order to diversify wildlife, preferably in the network of protected areas and public woodland in the region. The aim is to reinforce and reintroduce specimens in different areas of the region appropriate to the ecology of these species and, thus, increase their populations and occupy empty niches suitable for survival. To do this, they intend to use an estate of 489 acres located in Caravaca de la Cruz, owned by the company with its excellent environmental and infrastructure features specic to hunting. The Community will manage and provide technical advice for this project of breeding and reintroduction for reinforcement in different selected areas. Management will also coordinate and collaborate all species from the technical point of view, science and health. The company will also carry out the maintenance of the animals on the farm and produce hunting plans and also deliver information to the Community on 25% of the samples from annual breeding animals introduced for subsequent repopulation in public woodland.

Cats And Dogs Left To Roam No More Animals Being Left Without A Home! International Homeless Animals Day 17 August 2013
are too animals. This consequence leads to many animal shelters for cats and dogs killing animals when homes cant be found for them. International Homeless Animals Day has been introduced to help bring about new ideas and campaigns that will help form a solution. Governments and the public need to know how important it is to get their pets neutered. The sheer number of a lack of homes there are for these helpless creatures also has to be realised! Perhaps you would like to hold an event and really get involved with an adopt-a-thon, a rafe, or a sponsored dog walk. If you let the International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) organisers know, you will be sent a special pack to help you out with your own event. By coming together on International Homeless Animals Day you can support ISAR in letting the world know we will not tolerate the senseless killing that continues to take the lives of innocent dogs, cats, puppies and
kittens simply because there are not enough good homes for them. Together, we will continue to be a voice for the animals, and continue to demand an end to the suffering these animals face each day. You can also participate online by lighting a virtual candle and attaching a special message. Go to Facebook to sign up to ISARs facebook page for updates. If you have a pet that you need neutering, go to your local vet for information and prices compare different vets as some will offer special deals especially for those taking in stray animals. Contact the local animal charities as they may also offer nancial help. Having one dog or cat neutered could save that one animal having many more young animals which may end up on the streets, or it could save one male animal impregnating many female cats or dogs.
Every year local pet shelters all over the world are overwhelmed by overpopulation all because lots of poor animals have been left homeless. When animals arent spayed or neutered this leaves the risk open for them to breed again and again. Its cruel for the mother involved and cruel to her puppies or kittens. Another big part of over-population are puppy farms, where dogs are being illegally bred and kept in tiny cages. All these factors contribute to the reason why there

This month the Notting Hill Carnival takes place and with a Caribbean theme running through the whole three day event, what better excuse to look up something different. I have never been and it is certainly on my bucket list, but I have tasted some of the food. Jerk Chicken is very famous and most people have heard of it, but have you ever tried to cook it? Below you will see my recipe and believe me it is very easy and perfect on the BBQ or under the grill. Have a go at something different this summer and try the Cuban Black Beans, they are really very nice. Finally, not for the faint hearted or children, I added a little cheeky recipe for Dirty Banana. It is very refreshing for a summer evening, but be careful! One is enough for me! Buen Apetito Jerk Chicken Italian salad dressing mix 2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons oil 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper 2 1/2 lbs chicken pieces Mix all ingredients except chicken in bowl. Pour over chicken. Cover and marinate 1 hour or overnight in fridge. Grill it or BBQ it; then enjoy it! Caribbean Carrots 1 lb carrots, peeled and sliced/1 lb baby carrots, whole 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed 2 tablespoons butter/margarine 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger Cook carrots until tender, or to desired doneness. (I usually steam them to retain the most avour). Melt butter and add brown sugar and ginger, stirring to blend. Add
sauce to carrots and stir to coat. Cuban Black Beans 2 (10 ounce) cans black beans, drained (reserve the liquid) 1 medium onion, chopped 1 green pepper, chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon cumin powder 1/2 teaspoon oregano 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar Fry the onion and pepper in a little oil. Add the garlic and saut a little. Introduce a little of the bean liquid until all previous ingredients are soft. Add the beans with the remaining liquid. Add spices and simmer for about 30 minutes. Add the vinegar just before serving. These are good served over a bed of rice and a squirt of lime juice Sweet Potato Soup 1 tablespoon sunower oil 1/2-3/4 cup chopped onion (1-2 onions) 1 garlic clove, chopped 1 tablespoon curry paste (levelled tbsp, preferably Madras, Korma or another Indian or Caribbean curry paste you like) 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 4 cups peeled and cubed sweet potatoes (not yams) 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and chopped 3 cups chicken stock or 3 cups vegetable stock 2 tablespoons rum (optional but use white rum) Salt Recommended Topping 4 -6 tablespoons sour cream (any fat content) Sweet paprika Soup In a soup pot, heat oil over medium-low heat. Add curry paste and onions and cook for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat if necessary. Add garlic clove and ginger and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Add sweet potatoes and pepper. Mix. Add stock. Cook for another 15 minutes or until vegetables are very soft. Puree the ingredients in batches in a blender or puree the whole amount directly in the pot with a hand blender (if pot is high enough). Check if you like the consistency of the soup. Add more stock or water if desired and adjust the seasonings (check if salt is needed). You can add more curry paste if desired, but most pastes need to be cooked rst before adding to a dish. Add rum if using. Serve in individual bowls and top each with a tablespoon of sour cream and a sprinkle of sweet paprika. Dirty Banana Shake 3 ounces Tia Maria 3 ounces rum cream liqueur 3 ounces dark rum 6 ounces milk 2 ounces simple syrup 1 bananas Ice Fill blender 3/4 way with ice. Add all the ingredients and blend well. Note Simple syrup is a mixture of 1/2 water & 1/2 sugar that is simmered until sugar is dissolved & cooled.

Eighteen Humanists in Spain met on 21st June at the home of John and Rhian Blakey in La Majada to celebrate the longest day of the year. An excellent paella was delivered by the local restaurant and along with this and other forms of refreshment there
was a palpable air of bonhomie. Martin Rushton and Jim Smith demonstrated how to measure the angle of the sun using only a broom handle and tape measure and achieved an amazingly accurate result. Martin and his wife Anne then showed the group how to produce cyanotype images of plants using light sensitive paper. The results were surprisingly artistic. All in all it was an enjoyable way to celebrate the Summer Solstice. S i a m e s e cross Katarina is a 15 month old house cat. She was recently abandoned and we have had her tested for feline diseases which were negative. He is a very happy, playful pup and now in a foster home. He will be medium size when fully grown. On Wednesday 26 June, a team from Hoy cocina el alcalde of Canal Cocina, visited Mazarrn to shoot one of their programmes. This was attended by the Mayor of Mazarrn, Gins Campillo who was accompanied by presenter Begoa Tormo. The recording took place in a large caravan that was installed on plaza de las Comunidades Autnomas in Puerto de Mazarrn. There were many people who didnt want to miss the recording and came to the seafront where they enjoyed watching the lming. Among them was the Deputy Mayor of Planning, Francisco Garcia, who acted as assessor, highlighting the good taste of the dish which was also tested by other attendees as the rice was distributed among those present, courtesy of Canal Cocina. The team also went through other parts of the municipality to complete their programme to be broadcast
Another scenario that was the subject of the recording was the Museo Arqueolgico Municipal Factora Romana de Salazones, where in ancient times,meats and sh sauces were produced, more commonly known as garum. The Fish Market was also one of the places that will be announced in the programme, which offered a Castilian soup and crusty bread with squid ink made in the restaurant Jaloque del Club Social del Club de Regatas de Mazarrn which is planning to launch a restaurant-school with the support of the consistory Mazarron. on Thursday August 1 at 14:30, 17:00 and 22:00, on Saturday August 3 at 17:30 and 21:00 and Sunday August 4 at 16:30 and 23:00. The Mayor of Mazarrn, Gins Campillo, thanked the team for their professionalism and said that not only the local cuisine will be shown, but also our landscape and archaeological heritage will be seen in millions of homes throughout Spain thanks to Canal Cocina.
On Thursday 27th June, the Camposol Golf Association Committee organised a BBQ & Quiz at The Club House, Sector C, Camposol in order to raise money for their Captains Charities which, this year are: FAST (Camposols First Aid Support Team), MABS and Cruz Roja Espaola. The evening began with The Club House providing a BBQ, catering for 90 people. A delicious meal was served at the cost of 8 per person - very good value for money. The Club House staff, as usual, carried out their high standard of service throughout the evening.
The Quiz was soon underway and hosted by Quizmaster Brian Tape, who is well known to practically everyone locally who has taken part in a quiz! He is always very quick at dishing out lots of cheek etc, but also appears to enjoy receiving it in return! Lots of noisy, funny and friendly arguments took place, especially when Brian read the answers out. Some of the questions caused scratching of heads and worried frowns! Some of the laughter may have been caused by the fact that a few members of FAST were issued with headgear by Gerry Bradshaw, (President), who suggested that the white visors, displaying the FAST logo could be
worn! We are proud to be part of FAST!!! A Rafe was also held, with a large majority of the prizes being donated by Club Members, which included a Big Teddy, kindly donated by the Thursday Golf Group; The Club House donated a meal and a golf lesson from the Club Professional. Over 450 was raised in total!!!! FAST wishes to convey their thanks to: The Club House and all the staffs help, assistance, donations and for providing the excellent BBQ. Brian, for hosting the Quiz and the friendly arguments and banter. All those who kindly gave Donations. Everyone who gave their time, effort and energy in so many different ways and all the Supporters who attended this event. Bob Owen and Les Crook recently met with Lloyd Milen, British Vice Consul from Alicante and Bernadette Gallagher, Property and Consular Policy Advisor from the Embassy in Madrid and updated them as to the current situation on Camposol. Although the Embassy or Consul was powerless in matters of Spain they can and do attempt to inuence matters through meetings with regional and local government. Lloyd and Bernadette commented on the professional way in which the CRA operates and the fact that they continually meet with those in authority in an attempt to resolve problems. They said this was by far the most organised and effective expat residents group in Southern Spain. Bob explained that they had helped another urbanisation group to get established and had advised them on the legal way forward in forming a Residents Association. It was felt that the CRA could help others and Bob & Les conrmed they were willing to help the Vice Consul in this task. Bernadette said she followed our news and minutes on our website, so Bob offered to put her on the monthly email newsletter distribution list. Saladillo District Mayor Report There were many issues discussed during meetings with Jos Navarro and the Mayor of Mazarrn (Gines Campillo) and other Councillors and their respective departments and Juan Carlos (The Town Halls Lawyer) with some points to be nalised. Aqualia and the Council had still not been able to nalise any agreements and another meeting was imminent. Masa had approached the Council to offer a new agreement regarding completion. The Council have responded saying they will cooperate if they: 1. Release the bank bonds. 2. Instigate a payment plan of 8m. The Council have made it quite clear that they will cooperate if these conditions are met by Masa, or they will simply continue along the legal route if they do not. In the end Masa refused to agree with the councils demands, so no agreement was reached.
The Rambla and CHS situation is still very much on-going; the CHS still proving to be very difcult to communicate with, although there was a meeting with the Town Hall planned. 34 Replacement and extra rubbish bins have been supplied at the CRAs request. The use of the Cultural Centre for a polling station in future elections is still awaiting a decision from Murcia and the delegation from Central Govt, despite the petition and application being presented a long time ago. The issues that are either currently being discussed, or issues that will be discussed in the near future, in summary are: Streetlights; Childrens recreational area; Street signs across Camposol; The ofcial renaming of sectors A-D; The use of the Cultural Centre for duties such as Padron Registration etc; The legal status of the Back Road; The compost pits on D2 more garden waste bins. Jos reported that the procedure to be adopted for reporting abandoned and infested swimming pools was to see Tatiana at the Cultural Centre or by email. If no action is taken after 14 days then contact him directly with the details. Jos is looking into the C14/16 pavements and major drain problem along with the Environmental Health Councillor. He had called the department of Urbanism requesting a report on the structure and land at the compound on B3 which is now available for him. The structure is owned by a Ceramic Tile Company (PaferAzulejos), but they do not own the land. The enforcement is now looking to be directed at the Company to demolish the structure. Jos is in urgent discussion with Juan Carlos, the Town Halls lawyer, with regards to the legalisation of some properties on B4. Although the change for Sector A to Los Palacios is highly possible to do, it is not yet ofcial in the eyes of the Council. All 4 Sectors would need to seek approval and apply at the same time to the Council. Any names for each sector must have an association from maps
and plans of the area. Jos is working on this and a plan and application will be put for consultation before it is submitted to a Council Plenum. A list of areas available for childrens play areas on A/B/C/D has been given to Jos. The Council are prepared to provide the technical specication and plans, but the funds of approx 8,000 for equipment only (per area) would have to be sourced by other means. A discussion was raised over the piece of land opposite Masas old ofce that was attened for a football pitch. Apparently this land has an embargo on it and has recently been up for auction, so there are some historical errors in its original allocation. Register For The Padron and Voting at The Cultural Centre From September 27th between 10am and 12pm, residents will be able to register for the padron and the voting register at the Cultural Centre on Sector B. Staff from the Town Hall will attend on the 2nd and last Fridays of each month to attend to residents needs. This has been requested by the CRA for some time, but it was agreed at the last meeting Jos and Bob had with the UIDM executive committee. We are now the only urbanisation with full council ofce services in the municipality of Mazarrn. Bob Owen To Stand Down As Chairman Bob stood down as Chairman as from 3rd July. He is suffering from on-going health problems which he needs time to address. He remains an active committee member, but will be unable to give the time necessary to carry out the Chairmans role. Jackie Drewe takes over as Acting Chairman and all other ofcers positions remain unchanged. Rod Sawyer The CRA Committee were saddened to learn of Rods passing. Adios Amigos I am rapidly approaching my 85th Birthday this year. To ensure a predicted exit, I decided to close down Camposolers and Camposolers 2003 at midnight on Friday 19th July 2013. The timing coincided with little activity on both sites. The two moves, one in 2009 and the other in 2012, forced on Camposolers because of the complete removal of services by the rst free group website provider and the removal of the message board facility by the 2nd provider, may have been one move too many in a continually changing environment. Yahoo, our nal and current provider, has not met the requirements that Camposolers members had come to expect from their group site. Since 2012 there has
not been a free group site available that I would consider satisfactory. For over 10 years Camposolers had given continuous service. Membership peaked in 2009 with 651 members before its rst forced change of group website provider. I thank the current and past membership of Camposolers for their contributions and support through the years. I closed Camposolers with many memories. It was created in 2003 when many of us had a dream. I will never forget how excited we all were. The journey has had happiness, excitement, surprises, sadness, frustration, despair and optimism, arriving at the point where we are and Camposol is
today. Unlike the early days, there are now a number of community groups catering for the needs of owners in a maturing Camposol. The groups are managed by resident owners in Camposol that are trying and succeeding in making a difference and creating a sense of pride in their specic area of Camposol. There are a number of very serious Camposol issues still to be resolved. Given time and good community leadership by a few and the many owners using sound judgement in their choices and support, these issues may be equitably resolved. Our maintenance team continues to work twice per week and have been turning out earlier in the mornings because of the tremendous heat, weeding and watering the streets of Camposol C, recreating access to the short-cut over the Rambla, digging and planting near the Windmill and Welcome Wall and lling the ever present potholes! Thanks to all who gave to our buckets; so many people arriving in Camposol on holiday have noticed the marked difference since their previous visit every Euro helps with landscaping and planting. Thanks also to those who have kindly provided much needed drinks to the early-bird workers, despite the fact we must have woken some of them; our apologies (its hard to clean streets silently!).
Please, if you have any spare time, give the plants near your home or holiday home some water every area is suffering in these high temperatures. May we also politely ask that dog owners pick up any mess their pets leave behind. It only takes two minutes to deposit a bag in the bin and will keep the area poo and smell-free! Thank-you. We were happy to provide an information stand at the recent CRA Garden Party, exhibiting before and after photos and a free rafe for a case of wine which was won by a representative of FAST. Decklids Boys Do It Again!! A little over a year ago I met Hayden and Tyler Stapleton after they had taken part in the Camposol Fiesta Fun Run to raise funds for MABS Mazarrn. They struck me at the time as being typical boys who loved nothing more than BMX biking and computer games and apart from them both growing quite a lot over the past year, it seems nothing has
changed. They are as confident as ever, doing well at school and totally embracing their lives here in Spain. I was delighted to meet up with them and their parents again and accept the proceeds of their latest efforts in this years Fun Run a donation of 550. We cannot thank the boys enough for their support and superb efforts to raise such a tremendous amount; we are truly grateful. We would also like to thank Dave and Diane for their continued support of MABS Mazarrn and to all of their friends, family and customers who generously sponsored the boys THANK YOU ALL. It has been very busy time for the Group on all fronts. The registration of the Group as an Association is nearing completion and the title Los Palacios Gardening & Community Group, which aptly describes the Groups activities, has now been adopted. On 28th June, the Volunteers beavered away cleaning the Calles that have been sponsored for the Sweep, Clean & Weed. Major tree pruning and clearing of the waste, together with the usual tidy-up campaign has drawn favourable comments from the local residents. Would you like to be part of this great initiative? Well the summer is here at last - please be really careful. If you have cause to be transported by ambulance, or paramedics, look out for the Donated by PALS stickers. If you are in trouble at sea and a Red Cross Jet ski is needed, notice the PALS sticker and if you are taken to an emergency hospital tent, again its PALS. Over the past 12 years we have been responsible in donating over a quarter of a million Euros worth of emergency lifesaving equipment locally. We would thank to each and every one of you who has supported our functions or donated and we hope that you will continue so do. We raise our funds mainly through events, day trips, holidays, cruises and special dinner dances. We realise in these hard times that you have got to be more careful with your money, but we do try to offer competitive and in many cases unusual events. We hope that the PALS originals are still the best in organisation, cost and enjoyment. Recently we had a trip to Salamanca, Avila, Segovia and Toledo; probably the best we have every organised and we had many of our staunch supporters with us. We also had a summer special at the Rincon Elias with live music, Zumba dancing presentation and an hour of Flamenco dance. Lions have FUN at the Camposol Fiesta On a bright sunny day we set up our tent and started our instant rafe for a bottle of spirits, along with a mystery Bran Tub draw for the children. Later on the wind got up and so did our tent. Would you believe it the rst ball from the Bran Tub was a Specially Marked one and so she had the choice of any prize on the stand. Even non-winners had a chance in the Lucky Dip and did not go away empty handed.
World, June 30th is a special day. On this day the incumbent President steps down and a new President selected from the club membership by the club members takes over.
The Rafe for the bottles of spirit was based on selling a xed number of tickets and then an instant draw. Several times the winner had not left the area and could collect immediately. In the time we were at the Fiesta we managed 10 such draws with 10 happy winners. We would like to give a big thank you from the Lions of Mazarrn for all who joined in the fun and helped us raise nearly 300 for our charity account. This helps us to help those least able to help themselves. Change of President at Mazarrn In every Lions Club in Europe and across the
In Mazarrn, Past President Nigel Barker served in this position for two years, having bravely stepped in when the person chosen was unable to take up his appointment. This however worked well and Lions of Mazarrn has now chosen to have the President serve two year periods every time. The actual transfer of responsibilities were undertaken at a dinner at Marianos on Camposol A, where excellent food was followed by the usual brilliant music from Lenny Mitchell. Update on The Collection of Plastic Bottle Tops Firstly the Lions would like to thank all those who studiously collect the bottle tops and bring them to the Friday bric-a-brac stall and other collection sites. The steady ow of tops makes it possible to collect the volumes needed to help fund the trips for Little Eva. Soon she will make another trip to Philadelphia to the Institute for the Achievement
of Human Potential. At each visit the family report improvements. Eva is now capable of understanding everything that is said to her and along with improved mobility and an ability to stay seated for a few minutes on her own, always the hope is for continued improvement and quality of life for her. Eva can now communicate if she is hurting or wants food by means of drawings. Her treatment regime is very hard, with daily sessions of physical and sensory rehab. At home her mother takes care of the exercises and her grandmother takes care of her strict feeding programme. This is a 24/7 requirement and each improvement after treatment enables the boundaries to be moved on a little. The medication she takes has potential to damage her liver, but it is the only way to control the daily seizures. With these controlled, her brain can function uninterruptedly and concentrates on the tasks given. Its a ne line, but a necessary one. The family can now communicate with Eva and get more information as to how she feels, helping all the time to ensure her continued and safe development.
The HARLEQUINS Choir has been back on track raising funds for good causes, the most recent event being held at Los Almagros, at the home of Carol & Ken Robertson, on Friday, 7th June. Carol & Ken work tirelessly for SMILE, the charity that changes the lives of children who are born with facial disgurements. HARLEQUINS were able to go along to lend their support, contributing to a total amount of 600 raised on the night. These donations
will go towards operations that will correct cleft palates and cleft lips, thus transforming the lives of these children forever. HARLEQUINS look forward to revisiting Los Almagros in the future, supporting SMILE and enjoying the warm welcome that awaits us. Over the course of our last two events and with the help of those who have supported us, HARLEQUINS have raised a staggering sum of 1,435. Local businesses have done

Summer Activities Boat Tour A boat tour is scheduled for August 27. The event will start with a visit to the Museo Arqueolgico Municipal Factora Romana de Salazones and continue with the boat trip where visitors can learn about the watchtowers of the municipality, as well as its history and importance within Mazarrn defenses. The maximum number of participants is 30 people. The other cultural routes that visit Mazarrn, Puerto de Mazarrn and the coast, will have a maximum of 40 participants.

During the tour, participants learned how rice is grown, the different types and how ooded paddy elds have to replace rice plants. At the end of the route, all shared delicious rice after visiting the sanctuary at Calasparra. The Department of Sports Calasparra oversaw the activity, with coach Antonio Martinez in the lead, a guide and Civil Protection agents and 2 support cars accompanied the walkers. The Department of Sports of Mazarrn delivered a Phoenician boat to Calasparra as thanks for their collaboration with this activity and at the meeting. Walkers also participated from Club Alpino Calasparra and Pasico a Pasico, Campos del Ro. Dog Show The II National Dog Show Mazarrn took place on Sunday 20 June at the Municipal Sports Hall La Canadica, attended by nearly 150 people. Judge Ricardo A. Sanchez Palazn elected to give the award for Absolute Best to a medium black poodle Bedingeld Willy I Am, owned by Penny Evans and David Jenkins. The award was given by Councillor for Sports, Andres Valera, who was accompanied by Councillors Maria Martinez and Magdalena Mendez. The Canine Society of Murcia, the contest organisers, thanked the support of the City of Mazarrn and the President, Alfonso Castells, thanked those involved in the organisation of the contest and invited all participants to breakfast and other snacks.
nio Caldern holds this concert every year. They began and ended the concert with music from two of the best known and popular pasodobles known as Segrelles y Los Nardos. A concert took place on Saturday, June 22nd in the courtyard of the Casa de Cultura in cooperation of the Asociacin de Amas de Casa y Usuarios Almazarrn. Green Mazarrn On 22 June, held within the environmental programme Mazarrn Verde, the Municipal Cleanup Day in which more than fty volunteers served in three different areas. The group Green Fingers collected around 150 kilos from Camposol, while Alcedo did the same on the beaches of El Rihuete and Puerto, but collecting about only 50 kilos of waste thanks to the cleanups that are held throughout the year on the coast. The hiking club Amigos de la Naturaleza, collected about 300 kilos of trash from the area of the Cabezo del Santo in Mazarrn. The Councillor for the Environment, David Fernandez handed out commemorative T-shirts and caps.
Library New this year is the Library Service which will be installed on the beach of the island Mon-Fri 10:30am-1:30pm and 5pm8pm until 31 August. Those interested can go to the Beach Library to read the daily newspapers or magazines, and even borrow books through the library card. Childrens Beach Activities These will be at the Castellar, where there will be activities for children Mon-Thurs in August from 6.30pm-8pm. You do not need to register. Hiking Trails On August 19 Nordic Walking - night hiking is another great incentive programme. The maximum number of participants for the hiking routes will be 60 people. The registration period will be between 7 days and 24 hours prior to the activity at Mazarrn Tourist Ofce, Plaza Toneleros. Please remember to bring ID. Craft Markets El paseo Augustine Herrern, linking the beaches of La Isla and La Ermita, hosts a craft market, under the name Mercadillo Marinero de Baha until August 31st. The inauguration, which took place on 6 July, was given by the Deputy Mayor for Urban Development, Francisco Garcia and Councillors of Celebration and Rural Development, Isidro Coy and Magdalena Mendez. Several dancers animated the night with their dances to Arabic music. Tourists and residents gathered around the group to enjoy the show, while some of them took advantage of the opportunity to visit the different stalls selling various handicrafts such as gifts and jewellery, clothing and accessories, and sweets. More than two dozen booths were set up and can be visited from dusk to midnight until August 31. In addition to the above location, there will also be stalls on the Avenida Costa Clida. Hiking in Calasparra On Sunday June 30 the Department of Sports Mazarrn and Hiking Club Amigos de la Naturaleza travelled to Calasparra to celebrate a new hiking route that took in the

On Saturday 29, Alcedo organized a trip to CEMACAM of Torreguil, with participants taking part in a workshop on the traditional uses of plants in the home. Finally, within the activity Geomaza Fenicios y Mineros, on Sunday 30 a beach clean up of El Alamillo and Playa Negra took place. Carnival Thousands of people enjoyed the parade on 13 July at the Summer Carnival. 17 troupes, 8 local and 9 foreign, travelled from Paseo de Rihuete in Puerto de Mazarrn to La Plaza del Muelle. Mazarrn Salsal took rst prize of 1200; 2nd Samana of Mula, 900; 3rd Antares of Cartagena 600 and 4th was Playas de Percheles from Mazarrn with 300. The event ended with a party of good music by the mobile disco Pyramid. On the beach there was a fantastic concert on Friday 12th, organized by the City and Cadena Dial, brought to the town by Vanessa Martin, Kiko Gavio and the Murcian band Atrezzo. Again, thousands of people came to enjoy the performances of these artists, which without doubt was a weekend when locals and tourists greatly enjoyed the activities.
Music Auditions On 18th & 20th June, the assembly hall of the Casa del Cultura hosted the Escuela de Msica de Mazarrn end of course auditions. Students who take one or more courses with instruments took part and children from 7-8 years, interpreted small pieces adapted to their age and level coursing.
On June 21 the Casa de Cultura also hosted the Fiesta de la Msica which is an international celebration. This day saw free concerts and musicians playing in the street, offering the public the opportunity to enjoy the music and their favourite artists and composers. The musical association Maestro Euge-

Cartagena is a veritable port of many cultures, with more than 3000 years of history. It is a city for exploring, enjoying and learning and possesses a varied coastline, with long sandy beaches, high rocky cliffs or concealed coves. To the west of Cartagena are the beaches of Isla Plana and La Azoha; typical summer holidaymaker beaches. On the opposite side of the municipality are the extensive virgin beaches of the Regional Park of Calblanque, and Cartagena has two seas; the Mar Menor (Europes largest saltwater lake) and the Mar Mayor, or the Mediterranean Sea, separated by La Manga strip. These two seas offer innite possibilities, with warm, tranquil waters, next to the rolling waves of the Mediterranean, ideal for families or for the enjoyment of all types of nautical sports. Fiestas and Festivals The temperate climate in Cartagena makes it ideal for enjoying open air estas and festivals which are celebrated throughout the year. The most important estas are Carnaval, Semana Santa (Easter) and the Romans and Carthagenians. February begins the year with colourful parades of oats and satirical carnival groups, followed by the solemn processions of Semana Santa, a historically important tradition in the city and continue in September with the battles between the Romans and Carthagenians.
North where there are large warehouses and small business and on the outskirts there is a large commercial centre called Espacio Mediterraneo which has a full range of facilities. Of course the small daily markets must be included, which take place in the various districts of the city and outlying villages. Recently Cartagena has also become the perfect location to host conferences and conventions. Its rich historical legacy, its important industrial networks, the unsurpassable level of services and infrastructures are all available for businesses seeking a modern, dynamic and attractive city in which to hold important business reunions. The marvellous natural port and abundant historical heritage which the city holds are making the city an important stop-off for the increasing number of tourist cruise ships traversing the Mediterranean. Cartagena was an important and inuential city. Numerous archaeological sites and museums testify to the splendour of the city under both the Carthaginians and the Romans. From the Roman Theatre to the Thermal Baths, visitors pass along Roman streets and by Roman homes. The footprint of Mediaeval Cartagena is also visible in the form of the Concepcin Castle and the Church of Santa Mara. Walking through the streets of Cartagena, the visitor will note that modernism impregnates the squares and buildings of Cartagena. There are many examples of this artistic movement in the city, although the Town Hall and the Grand Hotel are outstanding examples.

The most important Festival in Cartagena is the Mar de Msicas, with concerts dedicated to World Music. Other important events include the Night of the Museums, the Jazz Festival and the International Cinema Festival. Cartagena gastronomy constitutes a good example of the Mediterranean diet, reecting the inuences of the cultures which inhabited these lands throughout the centuries. Friday 5th July was a big day for Sara Peters of Saralaras Bar in Puerto de Mazarrn and her friends and customers. The 2014 C h a r i t y Calendar, which has been in various stages of production since January, arrived from the printers and was launched in style. Most of the 15 ladies who appear in the calendar were on hand to autograph copies for the many people who came to support the event and see the calendar, which is the rst of its kind in the Mazarrn area. The idea was conceived by Sara, who wanted to exceed the funds she raised in previous years for the Ex-Servicemens Association
of Mazarrn District (ESAMD) and the annual Poppy Appeal. Sara and her team decided to produce a calendar along the lines of the popular lm The Calendar Girls, but with a different theme the 1940s and the wartime era, incorporating poppies and well-known slogans from that period.

Ask anyone in your circle of friends about Benidorm and virtually everyone has an opinion. For some it is a mecca for shopping. Others rave about the cheap food and drink; still others about the wild night life. Actually, Benidorm is all this, but much more as well. Wednesdays and Sundays bring a huge and varied street market, set up early in the morning and not closing down until about 1:30 pm, just in time for lunch, Spanish style. In the market you can nd everything from a pair of earrings or a watch, a new dress or swim suit, leather Spanish made shoes, or a kilo of ripe juicy peaches. How about a solar battery operated buttery? No problem. A vegetable peeler which also makes spiral shaped potatoes sure. Clothes in all sizes can be found and dont forget to haggle; its all part of the fun.

The gastronomical offer is wide and varied. You might want breakfast for lunch and can nd this all day long. A sausage roll is your favourite? You can nd this with no problem. If you prefer eating like the Spaniards, you have a wide selection of Spanish restaurants which will offer reasonable priced Menus del Da, or perhaps you just feel like a nice cold pint, or some ice-cream. If you take a stroll to Benidorm old town, you can nd more exclusive shops. Here your nds might not always be cheap, but you can nd some unique clothes, hand-made toys, and ne jewellery. In the old town too, dont miss the Mirador, a balustrade balcony overlooking both beaches (Levante and Poniente), and amazing views of the town, the sea and the back-drop of peaky mountains. Benidorm is also famous, rightly so, for its long, white-sandy beach. You can just lay your towel down, bring your own chair, or choose to rent a lounger and umbrella. The beach itself is very clean, although in the Aqualandia is one of the largest water parks in Europe. Scream down the long slides, enjoy a quiet time in the wave pool, or ride the rapids.

The players of the Old Guard were out on the course at La Serena on June 20th to enjoy another get together and do battle with the water hazards that this course is renowned for. Needless to say a good stock of golf balls
was required as most players saw a number of their shots end up in one lake or another. Despite this, John Dowie was able to notch up an impressive 37 points score to become overall winner on the day. He was followed by Martin Hill, who with 31 points, claimed overall second place and also took the Division One winners prize. In second place in Division One was Gerry McRobert with 28 points and with the same score of 28 was Jack Stockdale which was good enough to give him rst place in Division Two. Phil Carter was able to claim second place in Division Two with his score of 24 points. Division Three was easily won by John Dowie with those 37 points and Paul Western was second in this division with 28 points. The Nearest The Pin prizes were won by Steve Channon and Derek Hayward and Howard Wright was presented with the Plonker Trophy with a rousing chorus of appreciation from his fellow players. The penultimate race day of the spring series with the emphasis on sunshine and sufcient wind made for some interesting sailing. The morning race saw seven boats, three cruisers and four dinghies with 18 helms and crews sign on. There were four visitors enjoying the Mar Menor, in particular two very novice young ladies who had arrived in Spain at 10am and in less that two hours found themselves donning life jackets to crew in the Shoestring Uno. They stayed for the afternoon race and were delighted to be in a boat that managed 3rd position in both races.

It proved to be the best day of the series with clear blue skies, high temperatures and sufcient winds for an interesting competition. It was the rst race outing for Shoestrings latest addition to their eet, a 2nd Laser 2000. Whatever the nal outcome, both Lasers were going to challenge to be 1st over the nish line and that accolade went to Tug Wilson and Vernon OByrne in the newcomer. The Balaton boats which have swept all in front of them in recent times could not up the game. It was Don Clark in the Hartley who nished 1st, sailing solo in previous races he had managed to capsize, lose his crew, redeem himself, but this latest race proved the guy can sail. Tug and Vernon achieved a 2nd and the 3rd dinghy, again a Laser 2000 with Pete Cadwell and John Down, came 3rd. The second race added a further boat, the third Balaton (the one usually managing a clean sweep). Tug and Vernon managed to hold off Connie, pushing her into 2nd place, but Don could only manage a 3rd with the Hartley, but then he had gained a crew for the 2nd race; was this a drawback? Although the spring race season is coming to a close, SAMM continues to sail all through the year and welcomes new members. Don Clark was crewing this week, but still managed to nd himself in the water, which played out to a 6th position. In the afternoon the wind speed increased and once again, although Tug and Vernon were 1st over the nish line, Connie made it a clean sweep. Radio Control Mar Menor Sailing Group had another great afternoons racing with the monthly points racing series. June the 14th provided an excellent sailing experience with wind strength of 10 to 12 knots giving some very exciting action. David Atherton was Ofcer of the Day, ably assisted by Bev and Ann keeping score. The course was laid by Ernie; giving us a challenging course laid over a wide area with a great long downwind run. David ran six races; three courses were over a triangle and sausages course and three races were run over the same course, but with a rabbit start. Rob and Barbara took turns to be the rabbit. 9 boats turned up on the day with 2 not starting through technical reasons. The wind was from the North East and produced a nice long swell making the downwind stretch interesting. B rigs were the order of the day with only two boats braving it with A rigs. There were quite a few lead changes on buoys, making for some demanding sailing and a need to keep the water on the buoy
rules in mind. We only had a few rule infringements with one 720 penalty turn and a couple of 360 penalties; we are getting better. Race results: David Lees 1st place sailing an IOM, scoring 6 points. Robert Nichols 2nd place sailing an IOM, scoring 6 points. Nigel Lane 3rd place sailing an IOM, scoring 15 points. We have now had a Gold cup added to our monthly racing, kindly donated by David Atherton, to be passed on to the winner each month. This month we are able to report on not only the golf, but a very successful social event. On June 19th the Annual Hog Roast was held at the Spaniard Inn at Hacienda del Alamo and our grateful thanks go to the management and all members of staff who looked after everyone so well. Over 60 members and guests attended and from feedback obtained it was a resounding success. Heres to the next one. The monthly challenge was held on 26th June at Lorca Resort & Golf Club where once again we were met by the pleasant staff and a course set out to test even the best of us, excluding Nigel Chadderton, who despite playing off a handicap of 2, (yes 2!) decided to beat up the course and return a
magnificent score of 40 points. Only the handicap secretary knows what his handicap will be next time. Could it be scratch? We all wait to see. Following on in 2nd place was Ian Dalley with 33 points and a tied 3rd place between Mike Harrison and yours truly Geoff Sharp with 31 points. The
Nearest The Pin Winner was Norrie. This was the last of the scheduled games before the autumn, although it has been rumoured that some may brave the summer heat. The new corporate polo shirt has really caught on and I am pleased to announce that all who played at Lorca did so in their nery. Athletics Mazarrn Athletics Club sports season ended this year with a new national success achieved by the athlete Ismael Belhaki Rivas, who received a bronze medal in the 300m sprint test Championship for Cadet Athletics in Spain, played on 6/7th July in Granollers (Barcelona). Belhaki took the podium after successfully running a time of 36 seconds and 34 hundredths. He broke the record in the regional semi-nals, from 2007 at 36.28, placing the new mark at 36.16. Also participating in the Championship was Jaime Raja Aparicio, who came 6th in the shot-put with a mark of 13mtrs 40cms, improving their personal records. The new medal is a nale to a season full of medals and a successful presence of Mazarrn athletes at the championships, held not only at the regional level, but also nationally. These successes have received recognition by the City of Mazarrn with presentation of the award for Best Sports Club 2012-2013 during the celebration of the XII edition of the Sports Gala. XII Sports Gala This year the event was held in the Hotel La Cumbre, Puerto de Mazarrn. About 400 people attended the event including the Mayor of Mazarrn, Gins Campillo, the Mayor of Sports, Andres Valera, and Councillors Magdalena Mendez, Isidro Coy, Juan Miguel Muoz, Miguel M Garca and Carlos Garcia. Also coming to enjoy the show were the eld delegates of Real Madrid CF, Augustin Herrern, and the President of the Basketball Federation of the Region of Murcia, Juan Carlos Hernandez.

The Best Sporting Event 2012-2013 was awarded to the III International Petanque Tournament where teams have participated in Morocco, France, Switzerland and Portugal with more than 300 athletes from the world of bowls participating and organized by Petanque Club of Puerto Mazarrn. The award for Anniversary Team went to the juvenile team Mazarrn CF 1983, the rst team in the history of football for this category. In addition to these 9 awards delivered by Mazarrn Town Hall, the media group La Voz De Mazarrn, co-organizers of the gala and two of the usual sponsors Agroqumicos Los Cazadores and Cafetera Portobello, gave three awards: The rst A la Regularidad went to Alfonso Lian Serrano, A la Elegancia went to the player Mounir Kad, and the Dedication and Collaboration in Sport went to the Sports Section of Onda Regional de Murcia. Prizes were dedicated to various clubs: Athletics Club Alhama, for their seless collaboration with Athletics Club Mazarrn in both personal and material means. Tae Kwon-Do Club Mazarrn for the national achievements of ghter Antonio Mndez Acosta. CD Fenia for its 4 consecutive promotions. CD Puerto de Mazarrn for their female cadet teams Federation Cup Champions. Mazarrn FC and especially to Martin Hernandez Martinez for his commitment and growth both as a person and athlete. Club de Pesca Deportiva Puerto de Mazarrn with Jos Carlos Saugar at the head after being triple world champion. Cycling Club 9 for the XVII Marcha Mountain Bike. Club Senderismo Amigos de La Naturaleza for the organization of over 30 events and activities throughout the region of Mazarrn Club Atletismo Baha De Mazarrn for their co-operation and support in the National Championship Triathlon Regional Teams. Club Atletico Mazarrn for promotion to 1st category. CD Bala Azul, with youth team champion status and promotion to 1st youth. CD Mazarrn Futbol Sala for their youngest team Federation Cup Champion. Mazarrn Futbol Base and its outgoing President Miguel Campos for his work at the club. Francisco Daniel Andreo El Mara for his promotion to 1st Greek League with team FC Aelk Kallons. Table Tennis Throughout the weekend of 22nd and 23rd June saw the Top 8 Mazarrn Regional Table Tennis Tournament organized by Club Deportivo Mazarrn Tenis de Mesa. The sports pavilion La Acea was the location for the competition that closed the regional season.
Absolute category; two players from IES El Palmar, Jos Mara Ortiz and Jose Antonio Garcia took 1st & 2nd places. Benjamin category; winner was Juan Pedro Snchez of Totana, while the runner was Juan Francisco Lopez of CD Mazarrn Tenis de Mesa. Youngsters category; winner was Marc Gutierrez fromCD Murcia, leaving Javier Valero of Alsa City of Cartagena the runner-up. Childrens category; winners were Miguel Molina of CD Murcia and Andrs David Ros of Totana. Junior category; Antonio Marin of La Ribera TM took the title with runner-up Adrian Garrido of Floymape Cartagena. Veteran category; Domingo Mendez of Totana won the tournament, whilst Francisco Molina of CD Murcia came 2nd. Aquathon On 19 June, at the Sports Centre Jesus Canovas Valenzuela, Mazarrn, the Aquathon 2013 was held. The games involved students from several schools in the Municipality and Cartagena, competing in the various categories. After the competition, the Sports City Councilman of Mazarrn, Andres Valera, presented the medals to the top three nishers in each category. Youngsters Male winner of the event of 200m on foot, 25m swim and 200m walk was Daniel Lopez Verdes and Bilal Kafdi came 2nd, both from Infanta Leonor. 3rd was Sergio Cano Solano, from Puig Campillo in Isla Plana. Youngsters Female champion was Marta Olivo from Puig Campillo. 2nd was Marta Navarro Lorentes from Infanta Leonor and 3rd went to Molly McCarthy from the school in Isla Plana. Male Cadet champion was Domingo Cabrera, 2nd Juanjo Villegar and 3rd Ossama Moustarib all from Antonio Hellin. Cadet Girls, Alicia Fuentes participated from Antonio Hellin. Junior Men champion was Alejandro Navarro, Nicham Bouzaqui 2nd and Abdel Lah Dahir 3rd again from Antonio Hellin. Children, Cadets and Juniors had a 400m walk, 50m swim and a further 400m walk. Beach Volleyball On the beach La Reya, popularly known as Bahia Grande, during the weekend of 22nd and 23rd June, was the Beach Soccer Tournament III Bahia de Mazarrn involving a total of 12 teams from Molina de Segura, Las Torres de Cotillas, Murcia, Almeria, Malaga and Alicante. It was a team from Almeria, Autoescuela Matas, which emerged as champions, with runner-up being local team Channel 21 making it a great tournament. 3rd place also went to a team from Mazarrn, Clnica Seres Restaurante El Matas, while 4th was the team of Club Deportivo, Murcia. The player Pico, from Autoescuela Matas was voted player of the tournament. The Pichichi trophy stayed at home thanks to the success of Nico from the Channel 21 team. Finally, Chemi, also from Channel 21 was the tournaments best goalkeeper. The awards ceremony was conducted by the Sports City Councilman, Andres Valera. Highlights were the great atmosphere from the public in the stands and sportsmanship throughout the match. The judges and referees assigned by the Football Association of the Region of Murcia also did a great job.
The award for Best Club Sports 2012-2013 Athletic Club went to the Mazarrn due to the large number of successes during the last year. The award for Best Local Female Athlete went to Borja Saura Chinchilla, one of the leading gures of bodybuilding in U-23 category in the Region of Murcia, who has achieved this season three major titles in this sport. The Best Local Female Athlete was Maria Teresa Vera Parra who, since 2003 has reaped many successes in track and eld event at both regional and national level. The Best Team of the Year was awarded to the female child team Basket Mazarrn who qualied for a nal four in regional championships where they got a creditable third. This year there were two Best Promises; Miguel Ortiz and Juan Francisco Lopez of Table Tennis Club Deportivo Mazarrn. The award for Dedication to Sport was awarded to Antonio Rico Rodriguez, Director of the rst base football team of Mazarrn who has also written ve books on Mazarrn and the mines, as well as one of the entire football-history of Mazarrn. Following the success of the Go Karting experience in June, a group of Los Amigos members had an enjoyable evening tenpin bowling in Totana on 16th July. This was the second in a series of social events organised by the Executive Committee and many other events are being planned for the forthcoming season. It is hoped that the next of these will be a Motown Evening which is being planned for early October on similar lines to the hugely successful Beatles Tribute Night held last September. After a few disappointing seasons, the 2012/13 season gave rise to a genuine sense of optimism with Mazarrn FC nishing in a mid-table position which could easily have been improved upon had the early season results been better. The turnover of players at the end of every season at this level of football in Spain is usually great, but it is hoped that many of last years team will remain to help in a genuine attempt to achieve promotion back to the Preferente Autonomica.
Los Amigos de Mazarrn FC weekly meetings resume on Thursday 1st August. Social meetings, which are open to anyone, members or not, are held every Thursday at the Trevi Bar, Camposol B at 4pm, with the exception of the last Thursday of each month which is reserved for the Members Business Meeting and open to members only. The membership year starts on 1st August for 2013/14 and membership has again been held at 10. All existing members have received a renewal form by email and membership forms will be available at the Social Meetings during August and by sending an email to the Los Amigos Secretary, Barbara Marchant, at pamada.1130@yahoo.co.uk If you are interested in football, or just want to take part in the various social events, or just want a chat and a drink among friends in pleasant surroundings, why not join us for an hour on a Thursday afternoon? You will be most welcome.
Other suggestions for social events for members include Quad Biking, walking in the Sierra Espua, kayaking and a treasure hunt, as well as day trips to places such as Valencia, Granada and Benidorm. It is also hoped to repeat the Christmas Shopping Trip to Playa Flamenca Market and La Zenia Shopping Centre which proved hugely popular last year.
