Bottom and side shell must be framed i.e. stiffened Two different types of framing, or a combination of the two are used:

Transverse Framing Longitudinal Framing Combination Framing

Transverse Framing

Consists of vertical stiffeners- either bulb plate or deep-flanged web frames attached by brackets to deck beams and flooring structures Scantlings of frames depend on depth and end connections Particular locations e.g. end of hatches require frames of increased scantlings Engine Rooms require deep web frames

Transversely Framed General Cargo Ship

Transverse framing of single skin Bulk carrier

Longitudinal Framing

Uses horizontal offset bulb plates with increased scantlings towards the lower shell Transverse webs are used to support the longitudinals Commonly used in tanker construction

Longitudinally Framed Single Hull Tanker

Combination Framing

Longitudinals are retained under the strength deck and in the bottom to provide longitudinal strength Transverse frames are fitted on the ships side Plate floors and transverse beams are fitted at intervals to provide transverse strength
