DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF GSM BASED TOGGLE SWITCH SYSTEM USING SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE (SMS)

Abara, D. N.

ABSTRACT

The underlying principle of this project is based upon the ability of mobile phones to transmit signals in the form of SMS, which can be received or decoded, by another mobile phone. By using an SMS enabled mobile cell module and a micro-controller, this home automation system can be established allowing a user to remotely control his or her device. The signal is sent from a mobile phone and received/decoded by another mobile phone attached to the system itself which converts the received signals into binary for the controller. The binary output is fed in to a micro-controller which inturn has been programmed or pre-configured to drive certain appliances such as lighting points and sockets. The final system is able to remotely control the attached devices provided that the SMS service provider is online and that there is GSM network coverage over the area of control. While this design was implemented using Short Message Service (SMS), commonly known as text messages, the possibility of using DTMF (Dual Tone Multi-frequency) has also been explored.
