Nichollss Syllabus 8th Grade Science Required Daily Supplies: Please label each item with your name! o o o o o o o Continuous supply of #2 pencils (Pens may not be used on assignments) Continuous supply of notebook paper (spiral or loose, for some class work) 2 composition notebooks (One per semester) Colored pencils Graphing paper (loose or a pad) Simple calculator (Wal-Mart and Dollar-Tree have them for $1.00, but if you already have a scientific calculator for math it will be fine also!) Optional: colored markers, pencil pouch, ruler

Grading Policy: o o o o o First 5 Activities-Class will begin with a 5 minute activity that will vary. The daily activities will be graded for participation on most Fridays. This grade will be worth 10% of the students grade. Assignments-Daily assignments will vary and will be worth 20% of the students grade. Lab Notes, Lab Work, and Lab Reports-These assignments will be worth 30% of the students grade. Notebooks will be collected at various announced timed for grading. Quizzes-Quizzes over Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes, 5 Fundamentals, and current curricula will be given often. These will never be pop and will be worth 10%. Tests-Posttests will be given for each unit covered. These tests will be worth 30% of the students grade. 100%-90%=A Curriculum Schedule: o First Quarter Topics- Nature of Science: Scientific Method, Measurement, Units, Greek and Latin Prefixes and Suffixes, Dimensional Analysis, Graphing Techniques, Lab Safety; Life Science: Classification of Organisms, Diversity and Adaptations among Organisms, Fossil Record Second Quarter Topics- Physical Science: Motions and Forces, Speed, Velocity, Acceleration, Inertia; Earth Science: Landform Formation, Weathering and Erosion, Taking Care of our Earth Third Quarter Topics- Physical Science: Physical and Chemical Change, Chemical Properties, Conservation of Mass and Energy, Atomic Structure, Naming of Compounds and Molecules, Periodic Table, Chemical Reactions, Density, Measurements Fourth Quarter Topics- Earth Science: Earths Composition and Structure; Physical Science: Objects in Motion, Constant Velocity, Review of topics 89%-80%=B 79%-70%=C 69%-60=D 59%-0%=F
