6. Description of content: This draft regulation sets general mandatory safety and quality
requirements that fresh fruits and vegetables for human consumption have to comply with,
recommended also for fruits and vegetables for processing.

7. Objective and rationale, including the nature of urgent problems where applicable:
The objective is to ensure quality, protect human health and safety, and of environment,
protect consumers from unfair practices, provide correct and complete information to the
consumer.

8. Relevant documents: Codex Alimentarius food norms, Commission Directive 2001/95/EC

as of 3 December 2001 on general product safety, Council Regulation (EC) No 2200/96 as
of 21 November 1996 on the common organisation of the market in fruit and vegetables,
Commission Regulation (EC) No 1148/2001 of 12 June 2001 on checks on conformity to
the marketing standards applicable to fresh fruit and vegetables.
