Whats New?
There are so many new things and exciting things happening this year in Red Springs Middle School, especially in the 8th grade. The 8th grade staff is determined to see your students succeed, be prepared for the high school and be more than academically prepared. We look forward to the new heights we will all reach, TOGETHER.

Whats Going On In the Eighth Grade?


The eighth grade is off to an amazing start. Students are being challenged to think outside of the box and combat issues of the world they live in today. Not only are students meeting the challenge, they are exceeding them. In Language Arts, students have been learning about September 11th by reading several literary pieces. In upcoming weeks, students will be working on Making Inferences. Students will read short story Raymonds Run. They will be researching the Special Olympics. In Mrs. Burneys class, students will be doing the same, but they will be reading the novel The Bully. Students have made sequence maps, diagrams and used vocabulary in academic games and assignments. Both Language Arts teacher ask that students study vocabulary daily and read for 20 minutes each night. In Social Studies, students learned about the events of September 11th. Students worked researched information about the clips, saw many clips from that horrific day, interviewed those who remember the events and held an in class debate. Students greatly showcased their critical thinking ability. In upcoming weeks, students will be studying the regions of North Carolina and how the different regions affect the culture, lifestyles and business of North Carolinians. Students will build maps of the landscapes of North Carolina. Students will also research information about assigned regions and create commercials that will encourage others to move to North Carolina. Parents please review vocabulary with your students and make sure they complete all homework assignments. In Mathematics, students are learning about simple and multiple step equations. Students are also working on exponents. Students have been working to build calculator skills and word problem skills, as well. In the upcoming weeks, students will be working on the order of operations when solving multiple step equations. In Mrs. Burneys class, students are working with TI-83 calculators to solve single and multiple step equations. Students have been competing against each other using virtual games. Math teachers ask that parents ensure students complete homework daily and practice their skills.

Vocabulary:
(ELA) dialect, narrative writing, writing process, pronoun, tone, coordinate, commitment and occasional. (Math) exponents, order of operation, power, base, standard form, expanded form, laws of exponents, fraction and exponential form. (Science) microbiology, bacteria, virus, fungi, unicellular, parasites, antibiotics and vaccines. (Social Studies) region, landform, culture, landscape, piedmont, tidewater, coastal, map and key.

1. Review, Study and Practice Vocabulary daily. 2. Read for 20 minutes every night.

Whats Going on In the Eighth Grade? (cont.) In Science, students are learning about the characteristics of microbes. Students have been creating foldable and researching information about different organisms, such as protest and bacteria. Students have also been using microscopes to look at microbes. Students will continue to practice the steps of scientific method. Students need to study their vocabulary excessively in science. Vocabulary is the key to truly understanding science in the eighth grade. If you need to contact any of your students teachers, PLEASE do not hesitate to do so. Your childs teachers really want the best for them. We are all dedicated to your childs success.
