May, Chair Scholarship Committee Presidents Commission on the Status of Women 1321 Old Main Wayne State University Detroit, MI 48202 Dear Dr. May: It is an honor to have been asked to write a recommendation letter on behalf of Jennifer Swain for a scholarship from the Presidents Commission on the Status of Women. As an educator through Wayne States Teacher Education Division, I have had the distinct pleasure of having Jennifer in one of my recent classes. Throughout the term, she has displayed outstanding academic ability and achievement, often going above the norm in scholarly writing and projects that showcase her talents as a future teacher. As a function of the class, I brought readings to class for reflection and discussion, enlightening students to real issues in todays education. Jennifer not only showed a willingness to discuss and reveal her viewpoints, but volunteered articles of her own for discussion, which I used in class to great reviews. As an instructor, I look for students who not only can achieve academically, but have an ingrained feel of how to relate to todays students. I feel that Jennifer has these qualities, her work in her service learning placements reflect this, and I believe she will become a great teacher. Dedication is often what separates great teachers from average ones, and being able to respond in the face of hardship reflects the character of an individual. With Jennifer being a full-time student and a working mother of a special needs child, she has expressed that her desire to achieve her degree and become a teacher is one way to provide for her family and work in a field where she can make a difference, much like she sees the teachers of her own children, and she maintains the highest levels of scholarship. Jennifer Swains desire is to become a teacher. She has shown to be driven, resourceful, and, in relying on my decades of educational experience, able to not only instruct, but to inspire. To that end, it is my sincere pleasure to recommend her for a scholarship through the Presidents Commission on the Status of Women. If I can be of further assistance, please contact me.
