Demand for stopping the show trial based on fake charges against the
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi
‘Neeti Gobeshona Kendro’, a research organization working on human rights has demanded
for stopping the show trial based on fake charges and unconditional release of Aung San Suu
Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the leader of the democratic movement in Burma.
Burma has been under military rule since 1962. They have harshly repressed the democratic
movements in Burma at different times. The National Democratic League of Burma won the
general election in 1990 with the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi, but the military did not
accept that result and did not hand over the power. Instead they have been hindering the
normal political activities of all political parties of Burma including NLD. The military rulers
of Burma has been oppressing the minority people in the name of controlling the separatists
in different parts of the country. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has spent more than 13 of the
past 19 years in detention without trial, most at her dilapidated Yangon home.

The charge that Suu Kyi violated the terms of her detention is widely considered a pretext to
keep her detained ahead of elections the military government has planned for next year. They
are trying to declare her ineligible to be elected in the next general election. Burma’s courts
operate under the influence of the military and almost always deal harshly with political
dissidents.
The people of Bangladesh like all the people of the world are agitated to observe this show
trial arranged to send Suu Kyi into the prison for a new term. We want to see the free and fair
general election to be held in Burma under the supervision of the UN and the transition of
Burma into democracy.
