Ecumenism and Antiecumenism in the Orthodox Church

(Arguments for and against the Unity of the Orthodox
Church and the Catholic Church)

his study examines contemporary positions on the phenomenon of ecumenism. The positions studied in this work represent individual opinions and not
the official teaching of the Orthodox Church. The author divides the positions
into four groups and develops them toward their logical consequences, each reflecting a theological perception on ecumenism.
The author also investigates how some of these works cite the authority of the
Church in order to promote their own positions on ecumenism. The theologians
cited as authoritative hold more complex positions than is often presented. Concretely, this work shows complexity of Fr. Justin Popovics thought through a more
specified study of his work. This is done in order to dissuade the reader from (a
typically) narrow understanding of Fr. Justin thought on ecumenical dialog with
the Catholic Church.
The presentation of ecumenism through a deeper, theological lens aims to
challenge the awkwardness and negativity that is sometimes found when this
topic is brought up.
