Project : KOTHAGUDAM TPS -(2 x 250 MW) Unit : UNTT-9 & 10 Problem : AUXILIARY OIL PUMP BEARING FAILURE LEADING TO IMPELLER FAILURE.

PROBLEM: Auxiliary oil pump bearing failure. AOP supplied by M/s. Mather & Platt. Bearing failure occurred in two Aux. oil pumps due to lock washer lip failure and also lock nut loosening . This further led to impeller damage. ANALYSIS: The threading on shaft was right handed and the rotation was clockwise viewed from the drive end. This resulted in gradual loosening of lock nut resulting bearing failure and subsequent damage to impeller. ACTION TAKEN: As the thread cannot be changed on the shaft, double lock nuts are provided with a bent lock washer in between them as shown in the sketch. Presently the performance is satisfactory.
