IUCNRED LIST SYSTEM

It was initiated in 1963 use for systematic listing of species in their extinction. There are
nine category on the basis of conservation and planning effort around the globe.

1} EXTINCTION:-( (EX)
A taxon is said to be extinction if species has not been seen in its real habitat since 50
years’, three species like Java tiger, Caspian tiger, and the Bali tiger.
2} critically endangered”-(CE)
A taxon is said to be critically endangered when it is facing an extremely high risk of
extinction in the near future in wild. Examples are, Red headed vulture, Gharial-
populationdecline by 58% from 436 breeding adults in 1997 to 1992, one horned rhino.
3} ENDANGERED :-( ENE)
A taxon is called endangered if there population regularly declining by 70% of its total
population and facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future. Example,
Bengal tiger, Asiatic elephant.
FACTORS FOR ENDANGERED SPECIES
a) if the population is reduced to 50% of its total population in its 3 generation.

b) If the habitat of any species reduced up to 5000 sq km.

c) Probability of extinction of species of 20% population in 0 years.

4} THEREATNED SPECIES:-
A taxon is supposed to be threatened if it moves into endangered in the wild in near
future.
Example, Black buck.

5} VOLUNERABLE;-
If a taxon in near future moves into threatened categories. Example, cloud
leopard,sloth bear, gangatic river Dolphine.

6} RARE;- example, Indian egg eating snake.

7} INTERMEDIATE (I):-
Example are, Bengal Fox

8} INSUFFICIANTLY KNOWN (K):-

Example are: - Fishing cat.
“SHORT NOTES ON RED DATA BOOKS”

Sir peter scott in 1963 initiated the concept of red data book and it categories the species
at risk according to the severity of threats. Facing them and estimated degree to
extinction. The compilation of list is based on the global levels. The key factors that are
examined a) to understand the is the extinction of threate.
b) Its effects are changing in number and distribution of species.
c) Degree and type of threat and population biology.
Red data book is reviewed in every 5 years depending upon the number of species type
of threat and population character.
