Newburyport - The Newburyport Department of Public Services has awarded the Merrill Street Reconstruction Project to John D. Harnett and Son, Inc. Work on-site will start the first or second week of September, following a pre-construction meeting on September 3. The project will be conducted in two phases. Phase one will begin this September and will include removal of the existing trees, setting up temporary water services, excavating and reinstalling all of the water, sewer and drain pipes in the roadway, and patching the roadway for the Winter season. Phase two of the project will be done in Spring 2014 as soon as the weather allows. This work will consist of curbing, sidewalks, roadwork, landscaping and final paving. Due to the narrow width of the roadway, access to the street will be limited for the duration of both phases of the project. There will be times that vehicles will be unable to travel or park on the roadway during the day. There will also be parking restrictions during the course of this project. The City will work with the contractor to attempt to minimize the extent of such interruptions, but asks that residents adhere to the construction signs and the temporary posted signs. Work will be conducted between the hours of 7:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. during the week and from 8:00A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Saturdays, as necessary. Vehicle access to individual homes will be extremely limited during those hours. Pedestrian traffic will be accommodated, but safety will be the primary concern. The Citys project representative will be on site at frequent intervals and will monitor the work. The Department of Public Services is committed to minimizing the impact of this work and expediting completion of this project.
