My Year in Science: Grade 6

This year in science we will learn lots of interesting things, including, but not limited to the following: How Scientists Inquire (Standard 6Sa): How to use the tools and instruments of science safely and properly. How to design and safely conduct a controlled scientific experiment. How understanding the difference between observation and inference can help us understand and analyze data. How to use tools like dichotomous keys to classify organisms and objects.

All about Plants (Standard 6Sb): How we can determine whether or not something is a living organism. How and why organisms are grouped and classified in a scientific (taxonomic) system. How plants are grouped based on their structures. How flowering plants use their structures for defense, survival, and reproduction. How plants use different methods to reproduce. What plants need to survive, and how they go through their life cycles. How plants respond to their environment and how things like light, gravity, water, and other organisms can affect them.

All about Animals (Standard 6Sc) How animals can be identified and grouped based on their characteristic structures. How animals structures help them respond to changes in their environments. How and why cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals respond differently to changes in temperature. How and why animals have both inherited and learned behaviors that help them respond to changes in the environment. How internal signals (stimuli) like hunger and thirst help animals survive. Why changes in the environment can make animals shed, blink, shiver, and pant.

The Earths Atmosphere and Weather (Standard 6Sd) How our atmosphere is divided into layers that have different temperatures and gases. How water is recycled through the stages of the water cycle. How different shapes of clouds are associated with different kinds of weather. How masses of air of different temperatures and pressures cause changes in weather conditions. How to use scientific tools to collect data and predict the weather. How the energy of the sun drives our weather by creating currents and wind.

Conservation of Energy (Standard 6Se) How energy can occur in different forms and can change from one form to another. How magnets and electricity can used to create electromagnets, generators, and motors. How electric circuits can produce light, sound, heat, and motion. How heat energy can travel from one place to another in different ways. What work is, and how simple machines can make work easier. Where to look for simple machines in tools and devices around us.
