Classroom Management

Schedule
Literacy, global language (AC/BD), and math block before lunch Lunch (staggered) beginning at 11:50 with recess following Science/Social Studies/STEAM integration in the afternoon Specials from 2:00-2:55

Common Core

2nd Year of Common Core curriculum in WCPSS What subjects do the Standards cover? o English language arts, math, literacy NC Essential Standards o Science and social studies How do I help my child prepare for the Common Core? o Prepare to see more complex reading assignments o Multiple testing changes o Encourage your child to become a better problemsolver o See 4th grade standards on class website and WCPSS

Global Studies
Two World Language Offerings: Spanish or Mandarin Chinese Global Studies Integration: "Modern education requires multiple opportunities to learn about, and work with, diverse cultures." 4th grade focus = European culture

Curriculum: Literacy

Goal of Daily 5: Program that structures the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks.
Research based tasks: biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement o foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students.

Curriculum: Math
1st Quarter: place value, multi-digit addition & subtraction, multi-digit multiplication & division 2nd Quarter: multi-digit multiplication & division continued and properties of geometric shapes 3rd Quarter: properties of geometric shapes continued, arithmetic and shape patterns, fractions and decimal fractions 4th Quarter: fractions continued, measurement and data

Curriculum: Science
Science investigations this year will include: Earth Materials Electricity and Magnetism Animal Studies and Landforms

As a STEAM school our vision for science is to provide ample time for students to be engaged in scientific inquiry.

Curriculum: Social Studies


4th grade is an exciting year for social studies as

students study the history of North Carolina. In addition to history, we will discuss the government and economy (with an emphasis on how these things relate to North Carolina). Our Global Studies program will also incorporate how these topics relate to Europe.

Standards Based Grading


Level 4 Extends targeted grade level standards Since I can do/get this, I can figure out new things" Level 3 Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standards. I get it! I can do it well! Level 2 Needs support to meet targeted grade level standards. I almost get it but I need help. Level 1 Insufficient performance of targeted grade level standards. I dont get it yet. I need help. P This work is not being assessed. "I am practicing a new skill."

Parent Communication

Website -homework updated daily -newsletters posted biweekly Monday folders -assignments and assessments sent home -look for work to be signed and returned Agenda -checked and initialed/stamped by teacher each day -signed by parent each evening Email policy: Within 1 school day

Homework Policy
Homework helps 4th grade students extend skills learned in class, inspire self directed learning, develop good study habits, and show responsibility. Throughout the year, you can expect to see homework in the form of; worksheets, reading/reading logs, writing assignments, digital assignments, and flipped videos.

Homework will be recorded daily in students agendas and posted on the class weebly whenever possible. *Crunch Lunch and No HW Binder

Field Trips
TBA! :) Virtual field trips and off campus field trips

Each year 4th grade attends the NC Symphony (planned by our music teacher, Becky Grovenstein)

Volunteer
- Meet the Teacher packet - Cleared through WCPSS - Monthly classroom volunteer schedule sent home in childs Monday folder in advance (Oct. 1)

Conferences
*1st and 3rd quarter (required) *student-led -self-reflection and goal setting -data notebooks -assignments/assessments throughout quarter need to be signed and returned

PTA

Provides significant resources to support teachers with their curriculum needs. Sponsors student activities Sponsors low cost family events Provides cultural arts programming Coordinates volunteers Serves as a voice for our children and our school. And much, much more!
