Delta Secondary School Science Department SBI 3U Course of Study Outlines & Expectations

Teacher Course Grade Prerequisites Guideline Text Ms. Wade Grade 11, University Preparation Biology Science, Grade 10, Academic The Ontario Curriculum, Grade 11, 2008 Biology 11 (Nelson) (Replacement cost: $89.58)

Description This course furthers students understanding of the processes that occur in biological systems. Students will study theory and conduct investigations in the areas of biodiversity; evolution; genetic processes; the structure and function of animals; and the anatomy, growth, and function of plants. The course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study, and helps students refine skills related to scientific investigation. This course is divided into five units with the following Big Ideas as the main foci: Genetic Processes Genetic and genomic research can have social and environmental implications. Variability and diversity of living organisms result from the distribution of genetic materials during the process of meiosis. Diversity of Living Things All living things can be classified according to their anatomical and physiological characteristics. Human activities affect the diversity of living things in ecosystems. Evolution Evolution is the process of biological change over time based on the relationships between species and their environments. The theory of evolution is a scientific explanation based on a large accumulation of evidence. Technology that enables humans to manipulate the development of species has economic and environmental implications. Animals: Structure and Function Groups of organs with specific structures and functions work together as systems, which interact with other systems in the body. The development and uses of technology to maintain human health are based, in part, on the changing needs of society. Plants: Anatomy, Growth, and Function Plants have specialized structures with distinct functions that enable them to respond and adapt to their environment. Plant variety is critical to the survival and sustainability of ecosystems.

Homework : Homework will be assigned to accompany daily lessons and learning goals. There will be a certain portion of class time to complete homework and it is very important that you attempt some work in class to work out any possible misconceptions. Additionally, research projects and lab reports in this class will require your attention and time at home. Daily Expectations 1. You must bring a writing utensil, notebook, paper, and textbook to every class. A calculator may also be used. 2. Notes should be kept in a three ringed binder or notebook. Listen and participate in each lesson. Try to complete all assigned work to the best of your ability. Remember, these notes are your link to successful studying and good marks 3. Ask for help when needed. 4. Be on time and be ready to work. If you miss notes, quizzes, tests or assignments it is your responsibility to get caught up. Textbooks You will be assigned a textbook at the beginning of the year. The textbooks are in good shape when you get them and will be in good shape when you return them. If you damage or lose a textbook a $89.58 fee will be required. Assessment Through each unit of study in this course, student evaluations will include a balance between four categories of learning: Knowledge & Understanding, Thinking & Investigation, Communication, and Application. In calculating the students final mark, the following weighting will apply:

Attendance If you miss a class you are responsible to get the notes or handouts from the missed class. Do Not Miss Class. School policy requires parental contact if there are more that 5 absences or lates. Each missed assignment, quiz or test will only make this class more difficult. Furthermore, Do Not Miss Test Dates. If you miss a test, a doctors note may be required for a re-write opportunity. Extra Help I am available after class, at breaks or lunch, and after school for extra help in the science office or in room 310.
