DESIGN TECHNOLOGY Unit Title: BBIS News Duration: 6 weeks Grade 10 (MYP5) Context:

Working in a group of three, students will interview staff members and/or research events occurring within the BBIS community. During the course of this project, the roles of each group member will vary by rotating between: camera, reporter, and director. Area of interaction focus
Which area of interaction will be our focus? Why have we chosen this?

Significant concept(s)
What are the big ideas? What do we want our students to retain for years into the future?

Community and Service: This area on interaction students will contribute to the community by researching current or future campus events, and interview leading staff members.

Designers must take into consideration a range of views when developing a design and an objective best fit approach is required to communicate clearly.

MYP unit question

How can I research design, plan and create a News Broadcast for the BBIS community-related news?

Investigation:
Every one must perform each role, therefore everyone directs and produces a news clip News story 1 2 3 Reporter Will do the interviews Camera person Will hold the camera Director Will write the script and produce the news

The 5Ws of news-gathering - what, who, where, when, why - and how
Tasks 1. Write a Design Context: Explain what function News Clips perform and the importance of unbiased reporting. 2. Identify the news item you will make a News Clip for and give a short description of the topic.

3.

You will need to gather information, brainstorm the type of information you need on the topic and how youll get it. Write a survey/ questionnaire/ photos needed/ background information that you will use. Document your results from task 4.

4. 5.

6.

Critically examination of News Clips. a. Watch at least 3 short news clips of 2 minutes duration and list the website. b. Write a PMI on each: whats- positive, minus and interesting about the clip

7.

After gathering information and critically examining several news clips add at least another 6 relevant Design Specifications that will define how a News Clip will be considered good. A good news clip must have:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Intro slide with name of news channel, date, location, etc Image(s) Video interview/report Song or theme music 90-120 seconds Closing credits: Name Reporter, Camera person and Producer

8.

Your Client will review your News Clip and give you feedback, prepare a Feedback form for them to complete.

Design:
1. Develop a story board complete with key frames showing: time, the progression, transitions, voice overlay, and camera angles, pictures or whatever 2. Clearly described how the Design Specifications have been incorporated into the News Clip.

Plan:
1. For each frame in the storyboard list: equipment needs, camera angles, jobs and anything else relevant 2. Write a script for the News Clip

Create:
1. Create the news clip.

Evaluation:
2

1. Self evaluation of film against each of the design specifications with explanation of how the News Clip met or rated against each one. 2. Obtained feedback from the Client and report on it. 3. After the Self Evaluation and Feedback from the client make recommendations on how the News Clip could be improved in quality and content or developed further. Refer directly to the Design Specifications

Attitude to towards Technology:

1. Team work 2. Utilize time effectively 3. Complete work on time

Students must document evidence of research and analysis -Written a descriptive Design Context -Described the topic and client for the News Clip -Comprehensive brainstorm of the type of information you need -Prepared a suitable survey with appropriate questions and clearly documented the results -Clearly documented the critical examination of at least 3 News Clips with insightful comments -Written at least 6 suitable design specifications -Prepared a suitable means of collecting feedback from the client -Written a simple Design Context -Partly described the topic and client for the News Clip -Simple brainstorm of the type of information you need -Prepared a simple survey with some appropriate questions and clearly documented the results -Documented the simple examination of at least 2-3 News Clips with simple comments -Written at least 4-5 suitable design specifications -Prepared a basic means of collecting feedback from the client -Written a vague Design Context -Only stated the topic and client for the News Clip -Minimal brainstorm of the type of information you need -Prepared a vague survey with basic questions and unclearly documented the results -Basically documented the vague examination of at 1-2 News Clips with minimal comments -Written at least 2-3 suitable design specifications -Prepared a vague means of collecting feedback from the client No Design Context No Topic of client No Brainstorm No Survey or results No News Clip examination No design Specifications No feedback method

Design
Students must display a range of design features and ideas -Comprehensively developed the storyboard of how the News Clip will be -Clearly explained how the Design Specifications will be met

Plan
Students must document their work plan -Comprehensively described: the equipment needs, camera angles and other relevant items for each frame in the storyboard - Comprehensively written a script for the News Clip -Comprehensively described some of: the equipment needs, camera angles and other relevant items for each frame in the storyboard - Simply written a script for the News Clip

Create
Students must create a product -Created a News Clip that satisfies all the Design Specifications to a high standard

Evaluate
Students must document an assessment of the product and process -Completed an insightful self evaluation of the News Clip against each Design Specification -Obtained useful feedback from the client -Provided at least 4 insightful recommendations, referenced to a design specification

Attitudes in Technology
