VakratuNDa MahagaNapati Sahasranaamavali

: ll ll 108 Unique Namas from the 1000

During my last trip to India, I got a book named Sahasranama Sangraha which contains the Sahasranama (1000 names) Stotrams and the naamaavalis for several deities, at the Gorakhpur Press bookstore in Kashi (Varanasi). Finally, I got a chance to recite the 1000 names (naamas) of Ganesha during the inaugural day celebrations at the Bharatiya Temple, Troy, MI on Sep 9. 2013. I came a little bit early to the temple and offered my namaskarams to our priests and was talking with our temple head priest Janakiram Shastriji and our new priest Sriman Bharatan Desikan. Shastriji looked through the book and even bookmarked the page where this Sahasranamam begins.

While we were chanting, I noticed something unique about the namas of Ganesha in this Sahasranamam. The namas begin with every single vowel and consonant of the Sanskrit language. I have picked a few naamaas and listed them here to highlight this interesting feature of this Ganesha Sahasranamam. Interestingly, the list has 108 naamaas (16 + 94 2 = 108, if we delete the two namas added for the and sounds).

The Sahasranaamam begins with Om Ganeshvaraaya namah. This is listed as the first nama below. Following this, I have listed the 16 naamaas of Ganesha that are commonly used in most of our prayers. After that I have compiled a selection of the naamaas from the Sahasranaamam to illustrate the unique feature mentioned above. http://www.google.com/ig/directory?type=gadgets&url=hosting.gmodules.c om/ig/gadgets/file/103159279678197997651/googleindictransliteration.x ml Link for the Google Indic transliteration tool used for creating the Sanskrit text given here.

: means knowledge according to the dictionary, often the sound is changed to familiar sound. --- Added here for completeness means sound made by a musical instrument. The dancing (nartana) GaNapati makes this sound. We use the word to also describe the sound made by a dancer, as in the performance of Bharatanatyam where the feet are stomped on the ground repeatedly with fervor and the sounds of the anklets are made intentionally. It is of interest to note that naama 885 in the Radhika Sahasranamam is ( and appears in verse 153); see the Shree Radhika Sahasranaamam
