As per AISC guidelines, the combined ef f ect of f orces f rom moment and shear should be considered while designing f asteners or welds f or end connections of girders, beams, and trusses. When f langes or moment connection plates f or end connections of beams and girders are welded to the f lange of an I- or H-shape column, a pair of column-web stif f eners having a combined cross-sectional area Ast not less than that calculated f rom the f ollowing equations must be provided whenever the calculated value of Astis positive: Ast = Pbf-Fyct wc(t b+5K) / Fyst where Fyc = Column yield stress, ksi (MPa) Fyst= Stif f ener yield stress, ksi (MPa) K= Distance, in (mm), between outer f ace of column f lange and web toe of its f illet, if column is rolled shape, or equivalent distance if column is welded shape Pbf= Computed f orce, kip (kN), delivered by f lange of moment-connection plate multi plied by 5/3 , when computed f orce is due to live and dead load only, or by 4/3, when computed f orce is due to live and dead load in conjunction with wind or earthquake f orces t wc= T hickness of column web, in (mm) t b= T hickness of f lange or moment-connection plate delivering concentrated f orce, in (mm) Notwithstanding the preceding requirements, a stif f ener or a pair of stif f eners must be provided opposite the beam compression f lange when the column-web depth clear of f illets dcis greater than dc=( 4100t 3wc(Fyc) )/Pbf and a pair of stif f eners should be provided opposite the tension f lange when the thickness of the column f lange t f is less than t f=0.4(Pbf) /Fyc Stif f eners required by the preceding equations should comply with the f ollowing additional criteria: 1. T he width of each stif f ener plus half the thickness of the column web should not be less than one-third the width of the f lange or moment-connection plate delivering the concentrated f orce. 2. T he thickness of stif f eners should not be less than t b/2. 3. T he weld-joining stif f eners to the column web must be sized to carry the f orce in the stif f ener caused by unbalanced moments on opposite sides of the column.
