PREFACE
When my exam of IIT was over and result came, I asked myself if it was all over. Was this the thing for which I
worked so hard for three long years? Were the tips and techniques learnt by me of no use then? The answer
came from inside. No. How can you let your labour go in vain? That day I decided to share my techniques with
future IIT aspirants. I took an oath to help at least 1000 students in achieving their goal. This book is just one of
the attempts taken by me in this direction.
General questions asked by students during preparation of IIT JEE include:
What to study?
How to study effectively?
Which coaching should I join?
These are the questions asked to seniors, who have prepared for JEE but most of the time we dont get
satisfactory and complete answers. I have tried to answer them on the basis of what I experienced during my
preparation and what I got from the experiences of my friends while talking to them. Some additional topics
have also been covered. I am not a professional writer so the flow usually found in books may not be present.
Think of it as a letter of an elder brother advising the younger one & sharing his experience. I hope it will be
useful for you in achieving your goal. I advise you to keep this book throughout your preparation. It will surely
prove to be a good companion in your journey of preparation. Apart from this if you need any help regarding
the preparation of IIT JEE, feel free to contact me.
I have tried my best to keep errors out of this book. I shall be grateful to the readers who point out any errors
and/or make other constructive suggestions.

I NTRODUCTI ON
You are studying this book it means that you must be preparing for IIT JEE or want to prepare for it later on. If
you do not want to crack IIT JEE this book is not for you better throw it but before that answer my
question(assuming that you have opted science at +2 level) why you do not want to crack IIT JEE? Two usual
answers which I have heard are:
1) I want to select a career other than engineering.
2) IIT is out of my capacity & I will try only for AIEEE (JEE MAINS) or some state level PET.
If your answer is 1

then be sure this book is not meant for you and now you can throw it or better give it to
your friend who may be interested in it. But if your answer is 2

read this book once before doing any other
thing with this book. . First of all glow a spark in your heart: Yes, I can do it. Believe me this book can convert
the spark in fire which will burn the obstacles coming between you and IITs. But remember never allow any
negative thought to come in your mind or any demotivating person around you. If you do so even God will not
be able to take you to your goal.
If you are thinking that you will not be able to crack JEE just because you have not done well in your 10
th
board
exam. Let me inform you that IIT has nothing to do with what you have done in your 10
th
exam. It only checks
what you will do in the next two years. If you have not studied well up to 10
th
you may spend one month after
10
th
in strengthening the concept of math and science. When you have completed it you are on same level as
any board topper of your school. This is also a warning for those who have excelled in board and have made a
misconception that they will do it easily. No, the path is equally difficult for both types of students whether a so
called good student or an average student. Now all are equal and your labour in right direction in the next two
years will determine your future. Labour and right direction, both are equally important. We are here to plan
how we have to work for the next two years to achieve our goal.
The qualities you need always during this journey are: strong will power, determination, motivation, &
concentration. These play vital role in success of every individual, so you must keep all these factors high so as
to get your goal. These factors and how to enhance them, has been discussed in unit 1. This unit also describes
importance of time management and some important steps of time management.
Next you need right instruments (books), effective way of their utilisation (study), and the sequence (of study).
These topics have been dealt in unit 2.
Unit 3 has been kept to help you choose your mentor, whom you will follow to reach your goal. Can you follow
any one? No, he must have the quality to be followed. This can be very decisive factor of your success. So, you
will have to be wise in selection of your mentor. The qualities you should see while choosing your mentor
(coaching) has been discussed in it.

Unit I
DETERMINATION
If you have dreamt of cracking JEE then be prepared for a difficult journey. How much? A few line of a poem of
former prime minister very well describes it:

Swami Vivekananda describes this difficulty as: ARISE AWAKE AND REST NOT TILL YOUR GOAL IS REACHED.
If you have understood the above line and get its full meaning & work accordingly you need no further tips, you
will surely achieve your goal; you, yourself will discover your path.
If you are 100%sure of your success nothing on this earth can stop you from achieving your goal.
In my view the above surety of success is determination, thus the above line read as:
If you are 100%determined of your success nothing on this earth can stop you from achieving your goal.
Determination of success is a very important tool for success, so we need to understand it a bit more.
If you dreaming of IIT, are you determined of getting it? NO! Remember any one can dream but dream becomes
reality only for few. Dream becomes reality for those only who have faith in themselves & who are completely
determined of their success.
Determination comes when you have some strong reason for achieving the specific goal (in your case it is
cracking JEE). Do you have any strong reason why you want to crack JEE? This is must. If you dont have one you
will not get it. When I was studying an article of APJ Abdul Kalam, he has written there: My friends dont lose
your hope, get victory, before doing any new work write your aim in paper or computer. Writing your aim is
very useful while working on it, I suggest you to write you aim and some strong reason, why? Read it twice in
morning and evening, it seems as if a doctor is saying to take some medicine. It really works as magic you will
become more determined of your success. Great level of determination is not present in every one by birth, but
everyone con develop it. After seven day of practice you will see that your determination is increasing, continue
it throughout you preparation.
It will also be helpful in stopping you from doing unproductive things, you can command your mind that since
you have to achieve this and these unproductive things are not going to be useful in achieving you target so
dont do these. Always keep your target in your mind and act accordingly i.e. your action should be consistent
with your determination. Ask yourself, Am I doing exactly what I need to do to convert my dream into reality?
If not start doing. (Later on I will tell you what you exactly need to do to crack JEE). Remember only
determination is not sufficient, it is a necessary and basic tool you need, the first and vital step of your success.
MOTIVATION
On the way of you success you will usually get demotivated, while working for you AIM. Perhaps it is a difficult
path. Many a times you will have to select between two options like: whether to study or go outside for cinema

with your friends. Second option is entertaining & easy, most often you are tempted to select that. Now, is your
action consistent with your determination? No. Where is your determination? Let us try to understand,
whenever you study or hear something motivational you get determined for you success, you study mindfully
for next two days or so, as soon as you find any activity entertaining you choose that and forget all about your
aim etc. So, how to be protected from these? Answer is MOTIVATION.
Motivation is like accelerator in your bike, which you must hold to maintain your velocity. When you leave it
surrounding friction decrease your speed. For you velocity is determination, surrounding friction is over
entertainment and other temptations. So for you the above line read as:
You must hold you motivation to maintain your determination to a high value otherwise temptations of your
surrounding will decrease your determination.
Now the question is, how to get motivated? all of us get motivated by different means, what you need to do
is to select any one or more of them. Some examples are given below:
You need not to search motivation anywhere else it is there within you. Swami Vivekanada says Stand
up, be bold, be strong and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the succour you
want is there within yourself. You need not to compete with anyone else, if you decide to do better
than what you did yesterday. One day you will be ahead of all.
Some of you may not digest the above theory and may find motivation outside like you may want to
crack IIT just to disprove any one, or because you parents want you to do so, or just to impress the
most beautiful girl of you class.
For some of you success may be tradition of your family so you need keep up family tradition, while
some may want to crack IIT just for betterment of family condition.
You may select any of these factors or combination of these, or some other factors according to your nature and
surrounding. But make sure that you have one because it is the second most important thing you need for
success.
SURROUNDING TEMPTATIONS AND HOW TO PROTECT YOUSELF FROM THEM
When I say that you should protect yourself from surrounding temptations, I dont mean that you should not
entertain yourself. You must, otherwise your efficiency will come down. I mean that you should protect yourself
from overdose of entertainment. You may go for movie etc. With your friend if you have completed you work.
Set your goal every week, if you complete well in time then you may reward yourself in form of some
entertainment. Dont set a goal which you can complete very easily or which is impossible. It should be on which
you can complete if you stretch your capacity a bit.
Always remain aware of surrounding temptations. Firstly recognise which your activity make you waste your
time & lose your determination. Have guts to say NO to your friends if they are wasting your time. Do, what you
feel is good to achieve your goal. A line which I copied in my note book from some source (I dont remember
from where), I am pasting the same here:
Thoughtless people may ridicule us for standing apart, selfish people may torment us for not doing wrong
things, even our friends may regard our behaviour as stranger; yet we must follow what we have realised to
be true & right.
CONCENTRATION
We all know the importance of concentration in study, at least up to some extent but still we do nothing to
increase our power of concentration. It is the defect of our present education system, we are never taught to

increase our concentration. Concentration increases the ability of our mind and & so make the instrument
(mind) fit for study. How can we suppose of doing well with an unfit instrument. Swami Vivekananda glorifies
the need of concentration by saying: there is only way to attain knowledge, that which is called concentration.
Difference in concentration even decides level of person, difference between a higher person & a lower person
is just because of their different degree of concentration. The difference may even decide the result when it
comes to the matter of IIT JEE.
With a good concentration one can understand concept easily & in less time. Looking at the importance of
concentration, every IIT aspirants must try to improve it. For that you must learn some techniques. Remember, I
am not saying you to leave study & learn only the techniques of increasing the concentration, that would be just
fool. What I mean to say is to learn some techniques which are less time consuming. Spending some time for it
is not a big deal, especially considering the benefits it provides. Apart from that some psychological and physical
factors may enhance your concentration. Some of them are discussed here:
Many students have found Bhramri pranayam to be useful in enhancing their level of concentration. Apart from
this one method which I found very useful, is as follows:
Sit properly with your backbone straight. Close your ears with thumbs, eyes with fore fingers, nose with second
finger, keep other fingers above and below your mouth. Take out your tongue, make it cylindrical, now inhale
through mouth, and keep for as much time as you can. Now exhale quickly through nose. Repeat for 10 12
times.
This has great effect on concentration. You can also practise it in between the gap of studies. Usually, when we
study for a long time at stretch, we feel that mind is not ready to accept anything more. In such situations we
tend to give up. This practise at those times makes mind ready for use again. Mind becomes light & you feel
refreshed. While doing it you will find a golden sun like structure in your front, try to concentrate on it. Imagine
as if it is becoming finer & is meeting at a point. If you want to learn it properly, you may also consult me. I am
always there to help you, whichever way possible. When you are studying for long time in stretch, I advise to
study for 55 minutes in one sitting, & to spend next five minutes in practising it, again you are ready for next
sitting of study.
Some more habits, which may help you in increasing your level of concentration:
While studying, dont change your posture continuously. It does not mean that you should not move at
all, you must, but dont do it every minute. Changing you posture every minute does not let your mind
concentrate.
Once you have started to study a book, dont change it in every 10 minutes or so. Changing the book
(subject) like this retards your study and reduces concentration. Study any subject at least for 55 min
then take 5 min break.
Never say that this book is boring, for any book (or, subject). Keep saying to your-self this book (or
subject) is very interesting. It works like magic. If you will think that any subject is interesting soon you
will start feeling interest in that subject, and If you will have interest, concentration will come itself. So
start doing this from today for all subjects. Someone around you may try to say that so on so subject is
boring, dont pay attention to these things, just, keep working.
For a good concentration, you must have control over your mind; mind can be controlled only if you have
enough mental energy. Following activities drain our mental energy so try your level best to avoid these:
(a) useless talk, (b) purposeless work, (c) futile controversies, (d) concern for the things, which is none of ones
business.

The physical energy of a person is converted into mental energy so you must have energetic body. Your body
will be energetic if you take balance diet. Balance diet improves working of mind. 80%of the energy of the body
is used by mind, so conservation of ones physical energy is very necessary.
After, these tools (determination, motivation, & concentration) are in good condition you need learn how to use
time effectively.
TIME MANAGEMENT:
All of us get equal amount of time in a day (24 hrs.) still most of us feel lack of time. Only a few have adequate
time to complete their work in time. Do they get extra time? No, this difference is due to the way of utilisation
of time which people call time management. Persons not practicing time management are always in hurry, and
are never able to accomplish their task in time. This factor becomes one of the most important factors when we
talk about preparing IIT JEE. All successful students in IIT JEE practice time management, knowingly or
unknowingly.
Who knows the importance of time better than P. T. USHA who just missed Olympic medal by a fraction of
second. Similar is the situation when you are preparing for IIT JEE, so many students are preparing for it, that
too seriously. So you cant manage to waste your time, if you are serious about cracking IIT JEE.
To ways in which students passing 10
th
waste their time are:
1) Late start of preparation after 10
th
board: consider the fastest runner of a race. Can he win the race
in which he has starts late? Surely not, race in which even the fraction of second decides the result, one
cant win if he starts late. Students passing 10
th
usually say that they are taking rest after tiring schedule
of study for board exam, and will start the preparation with fresh mind. I completely agree with you,
you must start with fresh mind. To fresh your mind one week of rest is sufficient. If you take rest more
than that you get derailed from study track and it takes almost one month to get back to the track of
study (after your start) . Suppose you take two month break then you have lost 3 months, because in
the first month of your start you will not be able to study effectively. This much of time makes
difference. Those who start early always have smart edge over others. They gain advantage of 3 months
while others loose. This loss becomes too difficult to compensate even in the next two years. So my
advice is start the preparation just after your board exam, dont take rest of more than a week if
you take you dont deserve IITs.
2) Taking individual tuition for each subject: studying different subjects at different places waste a lot
of time in which you travel long distance to go up to the place, Not only this you get tired and unable to
study. So there is no point in taking individual tuition better search a coaching where all subjects are
taught. More points on how to select a coaching is given in a separate section. Individual coaching has
one more disadvantage: subjects like physics and mathematics are interrelated, but your mathematics
teacher will not teach any topic just because you need it understand some topic of physics. But in any
institute there is harmony among teachers so this type of problem does not occur.
There are many other practices which can save your time, which you can utilise for fruitful work. You should
avoid:
1) Using face book or any other social networking sites, just for these two years.
2) Going to movie regularly. You may reward yourself with a movie if you have completed the goal you had
set for the month, well before time.
3) Wasting your time in useless talk, purposeless work etc.
What should be done for better utilisation of time?

1) Know to study effectively, keep concentration high in each subject.
2) Take sufficient amount of rest. Sleeping for 6-7 hours should be sufficient. Mind can work effectively if it
has taken sufficient rest.
3) Try to improve the effective time you spend for study. If you sit for 10 hrs. You study effectively for half of
the time only, rest of the time you are attending calls or doing something else. Try to improve your
efficiency to 70-80 %, with this much of efficiency only you will be able to crack JEE.
Unit II
METHOD OF STUDY
After getting motivated for your goal & having made strong all qualities (concentration etc.) needed, now you
need to travel in right direction with right instruments & reach goal right in time.
Next three sections discuss method of effective study, books to be studied & the sequence in which the books
are to be studied.
2.1 Effective study techniques
Do you know how to study effectively? Same amount of labour and time will bring better success if you know
these tips. Let us understand it, with an example:
Have you ever played an adventurous mobile or computer game (ex. Prince of Persia or MI series), I am sure you
must have had played. Study is like playing a strange game. In the game (refer any adventurous game) you dont
know what to do in the next step (if you are playing it first time). You just go ahead sometimes you succeed
sometimes fail. Depending upon your presence of mind and your previous experience, no. of successful steps
and failure steps may vary but both must come. It is a package dealing Both success and failure come in
package and you have no choice to select only one of them. When you succeed you get ahead for next check
point but when you fail you restart from last check point (the one you could not clear). In this attempt you know
exactly where the danger lies and chances of your success this time is more than your previous attempt. If the
danger is very difficult you may take one more attempt but this time you almost always succeed.
Learning concepts is not very easy, it is a difficult process & takes persistent effort. You should have well
thought study plan, firm determination, and positive attitude. If you believe you cant understand any subject, I
will completely agree with you because you can understand it only if you believe that you can do so.
Two types of things you have to study at this level (both take different strategy to study) they are:
(i) Conceptual topics involving derivation.
(ii) Definitions of new key words and descriptions.
For conceptual topics follow the following steps:
Try to understand background of concept (i.e. what is it all about).
For derivations try to understand assumptions involved, follow the steps of derivation and try to
understand them logically (if possible).
Understand the meaning of formulae, its significance and quantities involved, notations used and their
meaning when to apply them and the exceptions related to the formulae.
Try to solve the solved examples then match your solution with the one given in the book. If the method
differs you will have chance to learn yet another method of solving it.
Now start solving problems, begin with low level problems and gradually increase the difficulty of problems.

Never leave numerical of the chapter, solve them before going ahead.
Initially write every step of application method and use conventional method of problem solving.
But improvise constantly and build your own shortcut. Now you may also learn shortcuts from other
sources but dont use shortcuts initially.
If you are unable to solve problem do not hurry to consult solution, study the relevant theory once again &
repeat the first three steps once again keeping problem in mind.
For descriptive topics you need to memorise most of the part, so it is one of the most difficult part for many
(including me). Any how you need to study them. Here are some points helpful in preparation of those
sections (which I used during my preparation):
Read the chapter carefully, after each paragraph try to recollect what you learnt in that.
Write important information in your note book, it will be helpful in revision.
For definitions of new key words and descriptions you need to do following steps:
You have to study the content very carefully, and concentration.
Make a picture of given information in mind
After every section try to recapitulate what you studied in the previous section.
Solve the questions related to the topic, these questions are theoretical but dont ignore them. Writing the
information which you have studied previously, without looking at the content fixes the information in your
mind.

Now the problem is what you should study so that you may get good marks in both board exam and JEE. I have
seen students going after many books for JEE, it is not correct. Which books you should study & how many are
needed must be wisely decided. This becomes very crucial looking at the limited time available.
If you have a lot of books of same subject, it is more likely that you will not be able to complete your syllabus.
At the same time one book will not fulfil your purpose. You have to select the best possible combination
PHYSICS: To study physics you need these books:
NCERT of XI &XII (or any other book based on NCERT) It contains material for your school & board exams.
HALLIDAY RESNIK WALKER (HRW): This is the best book of Physics I have ever seen on +2 level, Physics has
been explained beautifully in this book. No other book can teach you physics in a manner in which it can. Using
this book you will be able to feel physics in everyday life, not only this you will be able to visualise problems of
physics with your minds eye. While you are preparing you may hear some rumours about this book like:
language of this book is tough since this book has been written by a foreign writer. It is true that this book has
been written by a foreign writer but believe me language of this book is simplest. The language a bit different
from the language we use but as you will have get together with it, studying physics will become a fun. This
book is the best to start with.
HC VERMA (HCV): This book contains sufficient study material for JEE (advance) and has good collection of
questions. Only drawback is the language, which is in very condensed form. Most of the students find this book
very difficult to understand. I agree you will not be able to understand it initially, so it is not a good book to start
with. Once you have studied HRW it becomes easy to understand this book. Still, you will have to be very
conscious while studying HCV. If you study even one paragraph unconsciously you may lose much good
information needed for problem solving. The solved examples of HCV are very good, so must solve it.

MCQ (BHARTI BHAWAN PUBLICATION): This book has a good number of concept clearing objective questions.
It can be used for revision.
MATHEMATICS
To study Maths you need following books:
RS AGRAWAL: This is the most basic book, so best to start with. Many use RD SHARMA or NCERT, but I will
recommend RS AGRAWAL, because it contains balanced number of questions. Number of questions in NCERT is
not sufficient, that in RD SHARMA is too much. Solving RD SHARMA is just wasting your time if you are serious
about JEE.
M.L. Khanna (IIT Mathematics, JPNP Publication): This book contains subjective questions which are kept in
gradually increasing level of difficulty. The best collection of questions, which can take you to the level of IIT JEE,
is there in this book. This is must if you want to crack JEE. Some claim that since subjective questions are not
asked in JEE so there is no point in solving this book, but let me tell you that there is no other which can build
your foundation as ML Khanna can.
Problem plus IIT Mathematics by Das Gupta can also be used instead of ML Khanna.
TMH / New pattern books (Arihant or Disha): Any one of these can be solved for the purpose of revision, after
solving ML Khanna. It will also be useful in aligning you for the current pattern of the exam in last time.
Apart from these you may need: S. L. Loney (coordinate & trigonometry), Vikash Rahi (calculus TMH
Publication). You may also like to study calculus by Thomas Finny or by IA Maron & Hall and Knight (algebra).
CHEMISTRY
NCERT (XI & XII): The syllabus of JEE is almost same as that of Board exam, so this is a very important
book. It serves the purpose of Board as well as JEE (to some extent). Any other book based on NCERT
like PRADEEP, DINESH etc. can also be used in place of NCERT.
R. C. Mukherjee: It is one of the most basic books of physical chemistry and in my opinion the best to
start with. You will need to solve it while you study NCERT.
O.P. Agrawal (JPNP Publication, IIT chemistry): It is a very good book for IIT-JEE, especially you need
this for physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Organic section of this book is not good, but a
book of Organic chemistry written by same author for Disha publication is a good one and you may
need this to practise organic chemistry.
Paul A Bruise/ Morrison & Boyd: These are the best books of Organic chemistry, encourage
understanding Organic rather than just routing (which most of students think). You need to get any of
the two both are equally good. Some of students use Solomons Organic chemistry but I havent used
them so I cant recommend you.
Organic chemistry (Arihant): you may need it for practising questions of Organic chemistry.
Inorganic chemistry (O.P. Tondon): you may need it to practise Inorganic chemistry.

The sequence of study:
Now the sequence in which these books are studied is also important. Suppose you brought a book of JEE, you
started solving it and initially you are not able to solve it. You will get frustrated & tend to give up thinking JEE
is not for me. Is it really not for you? No, you can do it. So what is the problem? It is there in your approach of
preparation. You will have to grow from low level to high level. This is not done at once. No one is born with
ability to solve JEE problems. Every one learns, you can also learn. You will have to go step by step. Trying to
solve IIT JEE problems initially is like trying to reach on first floor from ground floor in one step? Can it be done?
No, one has to go step by step on stairs isnt it? Similar is JEE preparation.
Many JEE questions need the application of two or more chapters, so the sequence in which chapters are to be
studied is very important. Here we are describing one of the possible sequences. This section also gives
information about the time in which a particular portion should be studied, so it may act as your target. We
have tried to keep the target realistic. You are advised to break the target in various steps according to your
convenience, like target of a month week day etc.
Physics:

: Start with HRW. Remember you will have to give 3-4 hours for proper physics preparation.
While studying any chapter from HRW, you must know the way of its full utilisation. This book contains
following features:
i) Check points: After the end of almost each topic a check point is given. These check points are very
important in testing your concept. If you are unable to solve a check point after studying any topic it
means you need to read the topic once again.
ii) Solved examples: after the end of those topics which include numerical, some solved examples are
given. Dont skip these solved examples. First solve it on your own. Now, read carefully how it has been
solved in the book. Along with the solution reason of applying any formula in form of key points has
been given, which teaches you how to think on a given problem. Hence it is very important.
iii) Questions: this section is just before numerical section. The questions are like check points. These
dont involve calculation.so if your concept is good enough you should be able to solve them mentally.
Pen should be used to write answers only and no steps in between.
iv) Unsolved numericals: the unsolved numerical problems are given in the book at the end of every
chapter. These are classified topic wise, so after solving and analysing the solved examples of each
topic, try to solve these numerical.
There are two editions of HRW are available in the market:
I) Sixth edition
II) Eighth edition.
In sixth edition the numericals are indicated as E and P which means exercise and problem respectively.
Exercises are formula based, so solving these should be just cake walk. Problems need application of concept, so
you may find difficulty in solving some of these. You may take help of your friends or teachers. But, try your
level best to solve all of these on your own.
In eighth edition difficulty has been indicated by number of symbols (). One dot indicates exercise, two and

All these numerical questions have been given in ascending order of difficulty, this way the book takes you from
low level to high level. That is why this book is the best to start with.

Note: the answers of only odd numbered questions and numerical are given so many students prefer to these
only. If you have sufficient time, solve all of them. All check points have been answered so dont skip any of
these.
So, in short we can say that first you have to study a topic, solve check point given at the end of topic (if any),
now go for solved example and lastly for unsolved. Do so for each topic and that too topic wise. While solving
questions from any chapter any book, tick the question in which you felt difficulty. This collection of questions
should include the questions, to solve which you had to take help from others or which you find very useful for
any concept. This collection will be helpful in revision.
Some of you may think to study whole chapter at once and then solving question of the chapter. Let me warn
you for such an approach, it is just useless. You must solve all the questions of each topic, go ahead only if you
have understood properly the topic in hand. After finishing any chapter from HRW you should see the same
chapter from NCERT, check for any additional topic which was not in HRW. Study it and learn the derivation (if
any). Dont give much stress on NCERT, it should act as syllabus. Only topics not present in HRW should be
studied. Where ever I mention NCERT in physics, its role is same as mentioned above.
The sequence of the chapters is as follows:
Start with Motion along straight linechapter 2 and go up to Rotation & Rolling, with the same combination
and same approach. Each chapter should take one week, and so this section should be completed in three
months. If you have started in April, you should be able to complete it up to the end of June.
Now the combination of books has to be changed for the chapters: GRAVITATION, ELASTISITY, FLUID, &
THEMODYNAMICS (including Kinetic theory of Gases & Thermal properties of matter). The combination of
books to be used is (HCV+NCERT). The role of NCERT will remain same. These topics in HRW are not as per our
requirement. Sequence of chapters, as given in NCERT can be used. Thermodynamics is given in 2
nd
volume of
HCV so you will have to one copy of this also. Since there are six chapters so this section should take six weeks,
and must be completed up to mid of August.
Now there are two chapters left oscillation and waves, for this use combination HRW+NCERT. It will take two
weeks. So your whole syllabus ends in the end of August. Giving a margin of error of one complete month, it
must be completed by the end of September.
Now you need to solve chapters: motion to rotation and oscillation-waves from HCV. This whole will take
about 2 months. So must be completed by the end of November. Now time has come to solve ticked questions.
Solve all ticked questions from both HRW & HCV. This should be completed by the end of January.
It is the time to prepare for school exam. If you have studied honestly up to this point, this step should be easy
for you. You have done all derivation once and solved very good collection of numerical problems. You just need
to orient yourself to the pattern. For that practice derivation once again, and develop a habit of writing by
appearing in tests. This all has to be done in February.
This much is more than enough not only to get good marks in school exam but also building a strong foundation
for JEE. Now we shall discuss about 12
th
class preparation of physics.

, start preparation in April. For the 12
th
class HRW has better level of questions than HCV for most of
topics. You need to study both books together, solve the numerical of both books while you study any chapter.
Derivation has to be followed from NCERT (or a book based on NCERT like Pradeep, Dinesh etc.). Sequence of
HRW has to be followed. Dont touch optics of HRW. Whole syllabus should complete by end of August. You
may leave some chapters like semiconductor and communication system at present. Start revision with HCV.

First revise 11
th
topics and then 12
th
. Solve objective questions of HCV as well as of MCQ (Bharti Bhawan
Publication). Ticked numerical of HCV are needed to be solved. This should be completed by end of
December. Shift your focus to board exam now. Complete the topics you had left (if any like semiconductor
etc.). Dont leave JEE preparation completely; give some time regularly for it. In this time you should solve year
wise questions of JEE. But focus on board, do whole derivation once again. Dont skip steps while solving past
year board questions. In February study completely for Board. Give tests using sample papers available in the
market.
Mathematics:
Preparation of mathematics through self-study is difficult. You have to give at least 4-5 hours daily for math
only. Here, one of the methods of its preparation has been given.

: Start with RS Agrawal. When you start any chapter from RS Agrawal, study the theory part carefully, go
through the derivation and try to understand the derivation. Now, solve the solved examples on your own. If
you are unable to solve it, then look in to the solution. After completing solved examples solve the exercises.
Finish RS Agrawal of 11
th
in two months. It is just an introduction of mathematics to be studied at this level. This
should be completed by the end of May.
Start solving Trigonometry of ML Khanna. There is a level gap between ML Khanna and RSA, so you may feel
difficulty. For such chapter where you find a lot of problem, you may solve them from SL Loney/Das Gupta/ KC
Shinha. Do not solve whole of these books, it is not your aim. Just solve some of examples or questions of any of
these books and hurry to come back to MLK, Your aim is to solve MLK. This is the book which can take you to JEE
level. Solution of problems of ML Khanna is given, but do not hurry to consult solution. Attempt your level best;
following steps given in effective study, only then you should see the solution. Do not simply copy the solution
but analyse why you could not solve it. After completing Trigonometry, start Coordinate-Geometry that too
from MLK. Now solve following chapters in given sequence: Complex Number, Quadratic Equation, Sequence
and Series, Permutation and Combination, Binomial Theorem. Solve differential calculus (excluding application
of derivative) from calculus by Vikash Rahi, and not at present from MLK. This all should end one month before
your final school exam. Shift your attention to the school exam, solve marked questions of RSA.

: In 12
th
, take two months to finish RSA. Now, start solving calculus from MLK. In case of any difficulty
consult Vikash Rahis calculus. Completing whole calculus will take about 3 months. This must be finished by the
end of August. Now you can solve vector and 3-d from MLK. Finish all remaining topics like matrix, Determinant
etc. before mid of September. Now you need to solve marked questions of MLK from Coordinate Geometry,
Complex number, Calculus. These are important topics by JEE point of view. Complete these by the end of
December. In January you may like to study more for your board exam, but solve objective questions also, from
TMH or any new pattern book. In Feb pay complete attention on board exam. Solve marked questions of RSA.
Appear in test on your own using sample papers available in the market.
CHEMISTRY:

: You need to study chemistry 2-3 hours daily. Start with NCERT (you may also use any NCERT based book),
study each chapter carefully. Solve the questions of NCERT (if you are using side book do not solve all questions
just solve some of solved examples related to each concept). After solving each chapter from NCERT, solve the
same from RC Mukherjee, this is a very good book to learn how to solve numerical problems. But, the level of
the book is not sufficient to take you to the level of IIT JEE, so you need to solve the same chapter either IIT
chemistry OP Agrawal or chapter wise last year IIT JEE questions. Since solving this much (NCERT, RCM, & OPA),
will take a lot of time so my advice is to solve only the solved examples of RCM and OPA. You need not solve the

exercises. The sequence of chapter to be followed is: Mole concept, redox reactions, structure of atom,
chemical bonding, states of matter (gaseous state), thermodynamics, chemical and ionic equilibrium. Physical
portion of 11
th
finishes but you need to complete some chapters from 12
th
portion also, just because they are
inter related and also it will save your time to study Organic chemistry next year and revision. So, now need to
complete the chapters: solution, chemical kinetics, electro chemistry. Physical chemistry must be completed by
the last of September (5-6 months).
Now start Organic chemistry, you need not study Morrison Boyd now. You should study general organic
chemistry very carefully as this is the base of what you are going to study in Organic chemistry. GOC has to be
studied from NCERT at present. You must solve questions also, because this is this is the only way you can
remember it. Try to understand the concept behind reaction mechanism and keep solving questions is the only
mantra to study organic chemistry effectively. After GOC you will have to study hydrocarbon. You may use IIT
chemistry OPA to solve questions of GOC and Hydrocarbon. This is all needed to study from organic portion in
11
th
. This section must be completed in two months, so by the end of November.
Now start inorganic, revise periodic table, move on to S-block and P-block elements. Level of inorganic
chemistry for IIT JEE and board exam is same so NCERT is sufficient. You will have to solve questions from IIT
chemistry OPA. You may also solve Inorganic chemistry by OP Tondon. Since most of things in Inorganic
chemistry is to be memorised, so need it to practise continuously. Inorganic portion of 11
th
should be completed
by mid of January.
Now you need to focus on you school exam, revise using NCERT only.

:
Since you have already finished Physical, you need to study Organic now. Start reading Morrison Boyd. As you
read Morrison Boyd, solve questions of ARIHANT/ DISHA from the same chapters. Follow the sequence of
Morrison Boyd. Dont study anything other than the syllabus of JEE. It will take almost 4-5 months. Now start
revising Physical chemistry, from OP Agrawal only. You may also solve some Objective type questions from
some other source. It will take 2-3 months, thus will be completed by the end of October. In next two months
read Inorganic chemistry and solve questions from Arihant or OP Tondon. This will be completed by the end of
December. Now focus on Board exam. Solve sample papers keeping time in mind.
AFTER THE BOARD EXAM: After the end of Board exams start solving last year questions of AIEEE for JEE
MAIN preparation. You may also solve mock papers made available by Arihant, Disha etc. After JEE main you will
have almost 2 months for JEE ADVANCE. Revise MCQ of Bharti Bhawan and Objective questions of HCV for
Physics and solve new pattern books of Chemistry & Mathematics. Solve year wise questions of IIT JEE and mock
test. You may also join test series of a coaching of all India repute to judge your preparation level.

Unit III
How to choose your mentor
Although through the way given in previous section you can prepare for JEE on your own by self-study. Still it is
useful to have a mentor it has many benefits as:
You get a private attention (that too only if you are not in a very big coaching)
Mentor gives you all the latest information related to your exam (i.e. new pattern, books required how
to study etc.). You will not have to waste your time on these things and you will more concentrate on
your studies.
He will give you sure method to crack the exam and you will not have to rediscover the method. (It is
just useless to spend your precious time on finding out how to crack, that to when someone else can
give it straight away & you just need to follow.
He will be able to solve your doubt as soon as you get a one.
When you are studying with people having same goal you get motivated towards study & your study
gets effective. (It is difficult to motivate yourself during self-study & this is the biggest drawback of self-
study)
To choose the mentor is equally important, here are some important points using which you can choose your
mentor for your benefit:
The mentor should be the one who himself had prepared for the exam in his time.
He will tell you exactly what to do to crack the exam apart from the subject maer. Also he will understand
extra problems arising during the preparation, in addition to the academic problems and help you to short out
those.(After all he has also faced the same.)
He should be able to make you understand the concept.
The one who has done BSc. etc. may know much physics, chemistry, and mathematics but it is just useless for
you if you dont understand. For you the only thing that matters is how much you are able to take from your
teacher not that how much your teacher knows. I have heard many students discussing the achievement of
their teachers; remember you have nothing to do with that, you have to do with your intellect only. Your
teacher is not going to appear in exam for you. You may talk of his ability to explain matters to students.
Look for young and dynamic faculty in any coaching institute.
It insures beer interaction with students and you feel free in asking any doubt.
Change in the paern of exam is easily digested by young faculty, while the old one resist change. (There has
been drastic change in pattern of exam in your time.) It is like an unbaked earthen pot can be changed into
other shape, but a baked cant be.
Selecting a reputed coaching:
If you are selecting a mother branch of a reputed coaching then join it without any hesitation but for a daughter
branch you cant be that sure. Often they dont have good faculty for daughter branch, and run these branches
only on the result of their main branch. So, dont go by their all India reputation. First of all check the quality of
faculty. Carefully examine the batch you are joining, since the quality of faculty depends on batch also. See the

number of selection from this branch which you are joining. After making sure of these things you may join their
daughter branch.
(Looking at the new pattern of JEE and increasing importance of board exam I dont see any utility of joining
giant coaching, as they concentrate less on board exam)
Some more tips while you are studying in coaching:
Once you have selected a coaching (mentor), believe in him and his path. Follow him with trust.
Never try to test your teacher with wrong intention, always ask your genuine doubt. This helps you to
keep your aim concentrated at one place i.e. JEE.
Keep up with your class topics; never stay behind in your course.
Try to be ahead i.e. read the material from book, to be covered in next class.
