Working Memory Deficits in Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): An Examination of Central Executive and Storage/Rehearsal Processes. Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Advance online publication. doi: 10.1037/a0031742

The study was done in order to see how adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Healthy Controls (HC) effects adults and not only children, which is often thought is something grown out of. Working Memory (WM) involves storage and is made up of Central Executive (CE), the manipulation of internal information. Thirty seven adults, students between the ages of 18 and 24 with 21 with ADHD, 10 were males and 16 were normal with no mental history. The participants were clinically interviewed and completed a questionnaire about their developmental history, medical, mental, social and work history. They completed the Visuospatial Working Memory Task, the ability to understand visual representations and their spatial relationships with red and black dot, and the Phonological (PH), sounds and their production tasks a series of single digit and one letter recordings, where the participant would recall the numbers for smallest to highest. Both groups performed much better in the phonological task compared to Visuospatial task. Adults with normal conditions did better than those with ADHD. However the Adults with ADHD performed better than previous studies on children with ADHD. The study shows how ADHD effects adults and how it is still a problem not only effecting children. This study could have been more effective if it shown what was done to help stabilize the deficiency in Adults with ADHD and improve their condition.
