Stage 1 SPORT Program Fundamental Movement Skills Term 3 2013

Foundation Statements
Students participate and perform in dance, gymnastics, minor games and sports. They complete simple movement sequences that show an understanding of dynamics, spatial awareness, relationships, timing and rhythm of movement. They demonstrate fair play and cooperation in small groups. Students develop proficiency in the fundamental movement skills of the hop, side gallop, skip, overhand throw, kick and two-handed strike. They participate in physical activities that promote enjoyment and recognise the importance of these for health and lifestyle balance.

Organisation
This sport program focuses on fundamental movement skills. Every week for one hour, each class will participate in learning experiences based on one skill. The skills are; catch, overarm throw, hop, vertical jump, sprint run, skip, kick side gallop. An assessment will be conducted at the end of the lesson to determine if each student is developing the skill.

Outcomes and Indicators

MOS1.4 Demonstrates maturing performance of basic movement and compositional skills in a variety of predictable situations.
hops on preferred and non-preferred foot absorbs force when jumping and landing from different heights repeats movements to form a sequence, eg jump, hop, run

ALS1.6 Participates in physical activity, recognising that it can be both enjoyable and important for health.
engages in a range of planned activities, eg fundamental movement skills, favourite simple games, movement exploration describes how activity, rest, nutrition and sleep are important for lifestyle balance identifies physical changes during and after exercise, eg heart racing, breathing quickly, feeling hot participates in a range of minor games and practices that assist skill development throws a small ball or beanbag overarm to a wall, target or partner, using high and low pathways catches a large ball travelling along the ground or through the air with two hands identifies the most efficient ways of using a variety of games equipment, eg grip, stance, action

GSS1.8 Performs fundamental movement skills with equipment in minor games.

HOP
Location: Dots Equipment: None

Learning Experience
1. Warm Up: Tips One student is in and has to tip the other students. 2. Static Stretches: Complete various stretches of the major muscle groups. 3. Skill Development / Components: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Support leg bends on landing, then straightens to push off. Lands and pushes off on the ball of the foot. Non-support leg bent and swings in rhythm with the support leg. Head stable, eyes focused forward throughout the jump. Arms bent and swing forward throughout the jump.

4. Skill Application / Games: Note have mini breaks in between activities / play games using other skills e.g. skipping, jogging. Simon Says: Play to develop hopping skill. E.g. Simon says, hop forwards, backwards, sideways, hop four to the right, then hop four to the left. Have breaks in between with other skills. Bee Stings: Students walk within the space. One child is the bee. The bee chases students by hopping. The bee stings the other players by touching their backs. Change bees frequently / increase the number of bees. Hopping Mad: Students hop around until the teacher calls out a number. They have to form a group of that size. Hopscotch: Students use hopscotch squares to practise hopping. Vary hopscotch by getting students to hop with their hands behind their back, on top of head, on hips etc. Relays: Team hopping relays.

5. Assessment: Complete an assessment checklist of each student. 6. Warm Down: Walking (backwards, tiptoes, sideways etc).

Fundamental Movement Skill:

OVERARM THROW
Location: Netball Court Right Equipment: 15 beanbags, 6 small / medium sized balls, 5 hoops.

Learning Experience
1. Warm Up: Loose Caboose Groups of 4. Three children stand in line with hands placed on the hips of the person in front. They move around while the fourth child tries to join the end of the group. If successful, the first person becomes the chaser. 2. Static Stretches: Complete various stretches of the major muscle groups. 3. Skill Development / Components: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Eyes focused on target area throughout the throw. Stands side-on to target area. Throwing arm moves in a downward and backward arc. Steps towards target area with foot opposite throwing arm. Hips then shoulders rotate forward. Throwing arm follows through, down and across the body.

4. Skill Application / Games: Beanbag Throw: Students practise the skill by throwing a beanbag into a hoop. Throwing to Partner: Students practise overarm throw by throwing a beanbag to a partner. Partner will provide feedback to the student on how they could improve. E.g. take a step forward. Students can move further apart when they feel more confident / need a greater challenge. Corner Spry: Groups of four or five stand in a line facing a leader about two metres away. The leader throws the ball to each member in turn. When the last student catches the ball, he/she takes the place of the leader. The leader stands in the place of first student and the line moves down one place. Continue until the leader is back in his/her original position.

Team Passing: Make two even teams (hats inside out for one team). Students have to pass the beanbag to people on their team while the other team tries to intercept. The aim of the game is to have the highest amount of overarm passes without dropping the beanbag.

5. Assessment: Complete an assessment checklist of each student. 6. Warm Down: Standing (one leg, tiptoes, eyes closed etc).

Fundamental Movement Skill:

SPRINT RUN

If another student touches you, you are poison too and must skip with one hand behind your back. Start skipping slowly and get faster. Sharks and Seals: A student is the shark and stands in the middle while the remaining students are seals and stand in a line. The seals have to skip across to the other side without being tagged by a shark. If they are tagged or do not skip, they are then a shark. Water Under the Bridge: Students skip around in pairs. One pair of students tries to tag the other pairs of students. When a pair is tagged, they stand still, face each other and form a bridge by joining hands and holding them above their heads. To release these students, a free pair of students must skip under the bridge. Skipping Relays: Complete skipping relays in small groups.
