Sugar Act

Event Stamp Act

1765

Quartering Act

Soldiers were to be housed by the colonists during their stay in the colonies.

-Beds of hardworking colonists were taken over by redcoats overnight.

-England insisted on Colonists believed troops having troops even were there to keep them in after the end of the war. check.

1766

Declaratory Act

Reaffirmed Parliaments right to bind the colonies in all cases whatsoever.

-Colonists saw the act as an affront to their liberties. -The liberties were accepted as rights in the colonies.

1770

Boston Massacre

1774

First Continental Congress

A consultative body that met in Philadelphia to redress colonial grievances.

Continued rejections of appeals to the English Parliament and to George III brews deep resentment among colonists.

1775

Battles of Lexington and Concord

British commander in Boston sent a detachment of troops to secure gunpowder but were stopped at Concord by the American army. The redcoats busted through the minute Men in Lexington.

Effect on Colonies (Economic, Political, Social) -Colonial appeals were made to the English king and Parliament. -George Washington was made the commander of the American army.

Effect on England (Economic, Political, Social) -Appeals made to king and Parliament were spurned.

How it led to the American Revolution. British decision to not accept appeals set the stage for an all-out war.

1776

Publication of Common Sense

Thomas Paines pamphlet on how the larger land should not be ruled by the smaller land.

-Common Sense proposed revolutionary and radical ideas. -Paine wrote of a republic and Americas duty to form a republic, whose power flowed from the people themselves, not from a corrupt and despotic monarch. -Colonies were inspired by the idea of independence formalized in a document.

-The king was referred to as the Royal Brute of Great Britain.

It created the idea of America being able to be a republic and an end to hereditary aristocracy.

1776

Declaration of Independence

Document stating that the colonies ought to be and would be free and independent states.

-The document clearly delineated the terms of the colonies and meant conflict in the future.

The declaration guaranteed war between the two nations.
