This round table will feature the disGnguished Cuban historian Julio Csar Gonzlez discussing his most recent book, Por andar ves+da de hombre, which chronicles the life of Swiss physician Enriqueta Favez, who pracGced medicine during the early nineteenth century in the Napoleonic Wars and in Cuba. Considered female at birth, Favez self-idenGed and lived as a man, and was among the earliest documented transsexuals. Inspired by the life and works of Favez, this round table will consider the changing signicance and status of gender in contemporary Cuba and LaGn America.
