Take Action Proposal Example

Introduction My name is M. Buskell and I am a teacher at Kelvin high school. I have noticed that cycling related injuries and accidents are on the rise not only here in Winnipeg but also in other parts of the world. I would like to raise awareness to the importance of bicycle safety, sharing the roads, and proper protection. I would also like to start a cyclist advocacy group at kelvin that will meet to discuss the importance of bicycles in contemporary society. Body The main goals of my take action project are to: Raise awareness of cyclists on the road Increase cyclist safety Decrease cyclist related accidents Increase cyclists presence on the road Decrease unnecessary driving Improve health of an inactive population o I plan on creating a safe cyclists group at kelvin We will discuss ways to ensure safe riding We will discuss the importance of proper protection and reflection (helmets, reflectors, and lights) We will advocate for safer roads and cyclist-awareness amongst motorists We will promote a physically active lifestyle My action plan is as follows: o We will set up meetings in Kelvin High School o We will put up posters announcing our meetings o We will have our meetings announced on the morning announcements o We will meet weekly (or semi-weekly) to discuss current events related to cycling both in the community/city and in the world o We will research areas of the city with high accident rates o We will research areas with bike-paths and bike-lanes o We will share this knowledge with our fellow cyclists o We will organize group rides o We will put up posters explaining the importance of cycling in contemporary society Inquiry questions o Why are cycling accidents on the rise? o What cities have lowered cycling related accidents? How? o What can be done here in River Heights/West Broadway? o What does cycling mean for the health of citizens of any given neighbourhood?

How can we raise awareness of the importance of cycling in contemporary society? Who will benefit from these actions? Are there any drawbacks to having more cyclists on the road? Are there more demands on the city, the environment, or natural resources by putting more cyclists on the road? Are cyclists perceived as good sharers of the road? What can be done to sensitize motorists to the cyclists dilemma?

Conclusion My goals and aims are as laid out above. I hope to create a positive discussion regarding the role of cyclists in our community. Furthermore by promoting a healthy, active lifestyle I am hoping to minimize the cost of healthcare (as cycling has been shown to be a preventative means of healthcare). The ultimate goal is to raise cycling safety and the number of cyclists on our roads.
