INTRODUCTION

Anode and Cathode terminals as conventional pn junction diode

GATE

ANODE SCR 2N3668

Gate terminal for a controlling input signal

CATHODE

Anode

An SCR (Thyristor) is a controlled rectifier (diode). Control of the conduction under forward bias by applying a current into the Gate terminal. Under reverse bias, looks like conventional pn junction diode .

Cathode

BASIC STRUCTURE
4-layer (pnpn) device Anode, Cathode as for a conventional pn junction diode. Cathode Gate brought out for controlling input 3 junction- J1, J2, J3

OPERATION PRINCIPLE
Three basic modes of operation: 1. Reverse blocking mode: Junctions J1 and J3 are reverse biased and J2 is forward biased . A small leakage current flows. The thyristor does not conduct. 2. Forward blocking mode: Junctions J1 and J3 are forward biased but J2 is reverse biased. Still the thyristor doe not conduct. 3. Forward conduction mode: Junction J2 also becomes forward biased and thyristor conducts. J2 can be made forward biased by applying positive gate voltage or applying very high anode cathode voltage so that avalanche breakdown of J2 occurs and thyristor conducts.
