REFLECT & LEARN: Training for Educators

School Year 2013-14

Objectives
In this session, you will: Learn how the Reflect & Learn System was developed and how it supports REACH Students. Learn how to access Reflect & Learn, view feedback shared with you and enter your own evidence for formal, informal observations and professional responsibilities.

Gain an understanding of additional resources and tools available to support your use of the system.

REACH Students
Reflect & Learn supports implementation
Reflect & Learn supports information sharing for classroom observations

REACH Multiple Measures

Reflect & Learn enables the collection, organization, and sharing of evidence (by the administrator with teachers) Reflect & Learn will contain a single source view for summative REACH ratings
Reflect & Learn will be used for educator and principal evaluations
REACH is built to provide better feedback to educators to help them improve Teacher Practice will always be the most heavily weighted measure in REACH

Why Reflect & Learn?

What we were looking for
Prior evaluation pilots (e.g. EITP) showed need for usability, flexibility and efficiency in collecting evidence and aligning it to the Framework More than 200 focus groups with educators highlighted the need for a shared library of feedback that was transparent and two-way RLS will help to
Administrators collect evidence, align it to the Framework, & share it

RLS will
Provide reports that help facilitate observations

RLS will not

Hold individual student assessment data

Review uploaded evidence and reflection forms

Issue and share ratings after observations

Provide reminders to guide you through REACH processes

Contain REACH Summative reports

Reflect & Learn Pilot

During the 2012-13 school year, RLS was piloted with thirty-six schools and the department of Diverse Learner Supports and Services.
Number of Sites Number of Observations Number of Administrators Number of Educators 36 schools, 1 citywide department 2535 80 1263

Focus group sessions and surveys were conducted to gather feedback from observers and educators.
Users described the system as well aligned to the REACH observation process. Users desired a more stream-lined and manageable system design.

Updates to the system for the 2013-14 school year will provide a user friendly tool used to support REACH observations.

TEACHER PRACTICE
The CPS Framework for Teaching*
The CPS Framework for Teaching provides a common definition for effective instruction The basis for Teacher Practice ratings is evidence that is aligned to the CPS Framework for Teaching and the performance level continuum

*Adapted from the Danielson Framework for Teaching and approved by Charlotte Danielson

The Formal Observation Cycle

Pre-observation Conference
Brief (15-20 minute) meeting Focus on domain 1 (planning and preparation) Guided by the Protocol for the Pre-Observation Conference Educators should be ready to talk about the questions but are not required to submit written responses Classroom observation Administrator observes for the length of the lesson, 45 minutes, or a class period Focus on domain 2 (classroom environment) and domain 3 (instruction) Administrator captures evidence from the classroom Lesson must be from the unit discussed in the pre-observation conference

Post-observation Conference
Collaborative conversation Focus on domains 2 and 3 (continued) and Component 4a Guided by the Protocol for the Post-Observation Conference and the evidence from the observation Ends with suggestions for improving teacher practice and a professional learning focus

The Informal Observation Cycle

Classroom Observation
Unannounced classroom observation Administrator observes for at least 15 minutes Focus on domain 2 (classroom environment) and domain 3 (instruction) only Administrator captures evidence from the classroom Post-Observation Conference May be in person or electronic Educators may request in person feedback Guided by the Protocol for the Post-Observation Conference and the evidence from the observation Includes suggestions for improving teacher practice and a professional learning focus

Professional Responsibilities
Components 4b, 4c, 4d and 4e of the CPS Framework for Teaching are not observed during the classroom observation cycle
Define educators role outside classroom, including professional growth, contributions made to school, district, and profession

Demonstrated through interactions with colleagues, families, and the broader school community

Evidence is collected by educators and/or observer throughout the school year Observers identify performance levels for each component at the end of the year based on the evidence
