1 - Properties of Life and Scienti5ic Method At the end of this section students should be able to do the following under examination conditions. 1. Explain the roles of genomes and proteomes in generating unity and diversity at cellular and organismal levels. 2. Describe the hierarchical organization of life, and also the role that non-living scales play in organization of life (atom, molecule, macromolecule). 3. Explain how increasing levels of organization of living things display emergent properties. 4. Construct a comprehensive list of properties of living things and use those properties to argue why a given example could be characterized as living or non- living to reach a conclusion based on the weight of the evidence. 5. DeGine appropriately: a. Homeostasis b. Evolution c. Development d. Reproduction e. Growth f. Metabolism 6. Defend their position on classifying something as living or non living by logical, scientiGic arguments. 7. Describe the taxonomical classiGication of living things (Domain, Kingdom, Phylum.) 8. Name the three domains of living things. 9. Name the four kingdoms within domain Eukarya. 10. Explain how hypothesis-driven science differs from discovery science using pertinent examples. 11. Describe, recognize and apply scientiGic method. 12. Identify questions that can and cannot be answered by science explaining why this is the case.
