De Beer I am making a lab consisting smokers and non-smokers to observe the difference between their lung capacity. I will make an experiment with balloons and checking who will have the larger lung capacity, with just one breath. Question: How does a smoker vs. to a non-smoker compare for lung capacity? Hypothesis: I predict that the non-smokers lung capacity will be bigger than the smokers capacity because inside of our body we have alveolis and alveolis have walls, so people that smoke their alveoli walls will combine together and their lungs will swell up so there will be no space in between to let the air come in. So the smokers have more difficulty of breaking than the non-smokers. Independent Variable: The independent variable of this experiment is the smokers and the non-smokers (people). Dependent Variable: The dependent variable is the lung capacity of the smokers and the non-smokers. Constants: The constants are the gender and the age of the people. You can also say that the balloons are part of the constants because we always kept the balloons. Materials: 1. 2. 3. 4. 10 Balloons Measuring tape Recording sheet Pencil

Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Gather all the people, the non-smokers and the smokers. Tell each one to stretch their balloons by blowing them up a couple of times. Blow their balloons with just only one breath. Measure diameter of the balloon. Write down results on the recording sheet.

Results: Table 1: Lung capacity through the balloon experiment of 5 female non-smokers with the age of 20 and 5 female smokers with the age of 20. Number of people Nonsmokers Smokers 1 55 cm 45 cm 2 54 cm 43 cm 3 55 cm 44 cm 4 53 cm 45 cm 5 55 cm 44 cm Average: 54,4 cm Average: 44,2 cm

Conclusion: My hypothesis was predictably correct, the female smokers with the age of 20 will require a slightly smaller lung capacity compared to a female non-smokers with the age of 20. So what I observed was that a non-smoker will require a bigger lung capacity than a smoker. I can predict this by observing by results table. The reason of this is that inside our body we consist of many cells, bacteria, etc and one of these living thing we have in our body are alveoli, they are part of your lungs, a very important part in your lungs. So a non-smoker alveoli will be full and with the alveoli wall complete and a smokers alveoli wall they will be combined. Below there is some pictures with the difference of a non-smokers alveoli and a smokers alveoli.
