Other Health Impairment (OHI) Handout


Definition: having limited strength, vitality, or alertness, including a heightened alertness to environmental stimuli, child has limited alertness with respect to the educational environment. It is due to chronic or acute health problems such as asthma, attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diabetes, epilepsy, a heart condition, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, sickle cell anemia, and tourette syndrome. It also must adversely affect the childs educational performance. Characteristics: Student's who have Other Health Impairments may not be recognizable in the classroom, but their disabilities still remain significant. ADHD Definition: ADHD is the inability of children to control their behavior and/or pay attention.
