Principles of Design

Ian Dryer Period 2

Balance an even distribution

of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady. This shows balance because each side has 3 squares with same size.

Proximity nearness in space,

time, or relationship. This shows proximity because the squares are clustered together.

Alignment arrangement in a

straight line, or in correct or appropriate relative positions. This shows alignment because the squares are in a straight line.

Repetition the action of repeating something that has already been said or written. This shows repetition because the yellow and green repeat.

Contrast the state of being

strikingly different from something else, typically something in juxtaposition or close association. This shows contrast because the two objects are different and have different colors.

White Space

is often referred to as negative space. It is the portion of a page left unmarked: margins, gutters, and space between columns, lines of type, graphics, figures, or objects drawn or depicted. The space in the middle of the square shows white space or the negative space.

Bleed is a printing term that refers to

printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming. This shows bleed because the square goes off the page.

Asymmetrical having parts

that fail to correspond to one another in shape, size, or arrangement; lacking symmetry. This shows asymmetrical because they do not refect each other.

Proportion a part, share, or

number considered in comparative relation to a whole. Each square is relative to each other.

Serif slight projection finishing off a

stroke of a letter in certain typefaces. The i has a projection.

Sans Serif

typeface is one that does not have the small features called serifs at the end of strokes. No letters have a projected finish.

Focal Point the point at which

rays or waves meet after reflection or refraction, or the point from which diverging rays or waves appear to proceed. This is an example of focal point because your eyes are drawn to the middle red square.

Symmetrical made up of

exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis; showing symmetry. These objects are completely similar and same color.

Non Bleed is a print-

ing term that refers to printing that doesnt go beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming. The square doesnt go off the page.

Rule of Thirds guideline

which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs. This shows rule of thirds because the picture has guidelines.
