English 2201 Mealy Mountain Collegiate 2013-2014

Course Overview: English 2201 is an academic course which forms part of the Atlantic Canada Education Foundation curriculum and is designed for the majority of students entering Level II of senior high school. The study of language and experiences with a broad range of literature and media texts will enable students to reflect on their own learning strategies as they continue to develop confidence as language learners. Course Objectives: The general curriculum outcomes for English language arts are found in English 2201: A Curriculum Guide (Department of Education website).

Note: Though Unit 1 focuses exclusively on non-fiction, analysis of the form as it relates to current events will be on-going throughout the year. Unit 2: In-depth Novel Study (September 20th October 25th) Materials: Evaluation: The Lord of the Flies text, notes and study guides Quizzes In class assessments Out of class assignment Comparative Essay Test (after completion of The Lord of the Flies and Night)

Unit 3: Shakespearean Drama (October 28th November 29th) Materials: Evaluation: Julius Caesar text, notes and study guides In class assignments Quizzes Test: Julius Caesar Essay Test (November 28th 29th tentative) One Creative Group / Individual Out of Class Project

Unit 4: Poetry and Visuals (December 1st December 20th) Materials: Echoes 11 text; other relevant materials and selections provided in-class Evaluation: Analysis of poetic and visual selections Analysis test/assignment/homework

Unit 6: Oral Presentation Persuasive Speech (February March) Students must research and present a 4 - 6 minute persuasive speech on a current event (2013-2014). Please clear choice of topic with teacher BEFORE beginning project. Speeches will tentatively begin on March 3rd and will be completed by March 14th. Unit 7: Short Fiction (March 17th 28th) Materials: Evaluation: Echoes I1 and related selections Analysis of short fiction In Class and Out of Class Assessments

Unit 7: In-depth Novel Study (April 4th May 16th) Materials: Evaluation: Fahrenheit 451, notes and study guides Quizzes Study Questions for Fahrenheit 451 Comparative Essay Test (Literary analysis test Fahrenheit 451 and All Quiet on the Western Front / The Hobbit - May 19th 20th) In class assessments

Unit 8: Research Project (May 20th June 3rd) Students must complete a research project on a topic related to the novel Night. Your teacher will provide you with topics for this assignment at the beginning of Term II.
