BMC Control-M for Informatica

Simplify the management of data integration through enterprise workload automation

Key Benefits
Integrates Informatica workflows into the BMC Control-M workload automation environment Allows interactive scheduling of predefined workflows Eliminates complexity and errors by providing intuitive screens and job-definition validation features that assure job accuracy Secures the authentication and connection criteria required for Informatica workflows submission Provides detailed execution information and enhanced post-processing options that allow results analysis and automatic error recovery

Business Challenge
Organizations rely on Informatica data integration to achieve consistent delivery of and access to the data on which critical business decisions are based. Not only is the vast majority of Informaticas extract, transform, and load (ETL) processing performed in batch, but it is also tightly intertwined with many corporate applications, which themselves operate in batch. Informatica provides a basic scheduler to manage its own batch processing. However, this scheduling tool lacks service level management, auditing, forecasting, reporting, enterprise notification, and many other features required in a robust enterprise workload automation solution. Informatica alone forces IT staff to use multiple tools to manage critical workloads generated by its solutions and other business applications. Organizations frequently attempt to overcome these deficiencies by building scripts. However, these scripts are usually costly and difficult to maintain and may expose the organization to unnecessary risk.

The BMC Solution

BMC Control-M is a powerful workload automation solution that provides a single, enterprise-wide view of all managed workload. Collections of jobs are assembled into batch services that include a defined deadline, which is then actively monitored in real time to ensure compliance with service level agreements (SLAs). The management of the workload is performed via a graphical console that shows hierarchical relationships and provides facilities for designing, modifying, and forecasting workload. application module that adds support for Informatica Power Center Workflows. It contains a wizard-like job definition template that makes the process of defining Informatica parameters straightforward for Informatica users, while also making it intuitive for production control staff who are more familiar with BMC Control-M workload automation concepts.

Reduce Total Cost of Ownership

BMC Control-M provides a broad range of platform and application support, including z/OS , UNIX , Linux , Windows, file transfer, ERPs, relational databases, web services, and SAP Business Objects, thus enabling organizations to manage all their jobs in a single solution that provides an end-to-end view of batch processing, including Informatica jobs. With BMC Control-M, IT staff can now manage the entire business process and gain access to the logs, documentation, and job output all from a single, consistent interface. Notifications and alerts can be sent via email, forwarded to an enterprise event console, or integrated into an IT service support solution, such as the BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite.

BMC Control-M for Informatica helps organizations automate data integration workflows by providing a wizard-like facility for defining jobs that execute workflows on multiple PowerCenter servers, as well as a graphical profile configuration mechanism for managing multiple connections to Informatica PowerCenter instances via the Informatica Web Services Hub. This approach significantly reduces the effort and costs associated with the maintenance of homegrown scripts and manual configurations.

Define and Monitor Service Levels

BMC Control-M enables the definition of service levels directly within the job streams that create batch services. A batch service is given a business-relevant name, such as HR Processing or SCM, along with a deadline for when that batch service must be completed. This represents the SLA. BMC Control-M then dynamically discovers all jobs (Informatica and others) that must be completed to meet the SLA. Batch services are monitored in real time, and if the projected completion becomes later than the requested deadline, BMC Control-M immediately begins notifying of a potential SLA breach.

Analyze the Impact of Future Changes

BMC Control-M provides comprehensive forecasting facilities that enable organizations to plan changes in the workload automation environment and analyze the potential impact of changes on SLAs. For example, if changes are anticipated to a server machine that will make that host unavailable for some period of time, it is simple to forecast the change window to determine if any Informatica workflows would be running on that machine and if the service disruption could cause an SLA breach. Additionally, changes in the business environment, such as high transaction volumes that would elongate job execution, can be simulated to check if the longer run times could result in missed SLAs.
