Herald Reporter Harare Mayoress Mrs Fikile Masunda on Wednesday handed over basic goods and blankets worth US$5 000 to 70 elderly people who are carrying the burden of looking after their orphaned grandchildren in Budiriro in the capital. The donation was made from the Mayors Cheer Fund to try and lessen the burden of the elderly who were caring for the orphans. Mrs Masunda said the Mayors Cheer Fund expected to assist 86 homes this year. Almost every year we get a list from councillors of people in need and we are hoping to assist 86 homes this year, she said. Some of the institution that have so far received support included Harare Childrens Home, Chinyaradzo and Danai Childrens Home among others. The problem that we are facing in assisting the elderly people is lack of volunteers to work and reach out to these people, she said. We need more volunteers. She said the Mayors Cheer Fund was also assisting 12 children with fees. We paid about US$6 000 this term for 12 children that we are assisting for five years. Four girls are now at university and in their final year now while the rest are still at primary and secondary school level, Mrs Masunda said.
