MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg. Water will flow from an area of high concentration through the membrane to an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion if water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that if a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg. I believe this because the vinegar has a higher concentration of water at 95% and the egg has a lower concentration of water at 74%. The 5% acid in the vinegar will dissolve the eggshell. After this happens the water will be able flow through the egg membrane and into the egg, causing the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 OBSERVATIONS > Bubbles on eggshell > 50 mils water displacement >Foam in the water >The egg shell had been mostly dissolved >egg gained 50ml of water and 2.5 cm >No more foam

CONCLUSION In this lab we were investigating osmosis. After 4 days water molecules from the vinegar that had high concentration of water molecules through the selectively permeable membrane and into egg which had a low concentration of water molecules causing the egg to expand. Our groups egg expanded 3.0 cm, .3 cm higher than the 7th grade average. I hypothesized that the water molecules would flow into the egg my hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions. For question number one, must use the following words in your paragraph: egg shell (calcium carbonate), vinegar (weak acid), selectively permeable membrane.

1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? The process that caused the eggshell to dissolve was; First when the egg was placed into vinegar the 5 percent acid in the vinegar dissolved the calcium carbonate egg shell revealing the selectively permeable membrane. 2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results? These two groups got different results. The difference of these two numbers in 3.4. The rate of group 3s expansion was 0.046875 cm per hour and 1.125 cm per day. The rate of group 7s expansion was 0.011458 cm per hour and 0.257 cm per day. This could be due to many things such as each of the two eggs may have different amounts of water in them or the vinegar had less water in it. PERIOD 7 TOTAL EXPANSION IN 4 DAYS 4.5 cm 1.1 cm

Cells need water to maintain their shape, to transfer things around cell, and for chemical reactions to take place inside the cell.
