MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for 4 days, then the water will flow in the egg from an area of higher concentration through the membrane into an area of lower concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: The water will flow into the egg because Osmosis is the diffusion of water, this is when water flows from an area of higher concentration through a selectively permeable membrane into an area of lower concentration. The vinegar consists of 95% water and the egg consists of 74% water. The acid in the vinegar will cause the eggshell to dissolve, making it easier for the water to flow from the vinegar to the egg. If this is so than the water will flow into the egg causing it to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 1 14 3 16.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 275 OBSERVATIONS bubbles on the shell/evidence of a chemical reaction. displaced 50 ml. 245 ml water in beaker without egg. Egg was yellow, squishy, heavy, and had the texture of a water balloon. Egg was also slimy. Egg expanded 2.5 cms. Covered in foam/egg shell. There was only a little she left. Egg was partially see-through Yolk was moving inside egg Shell was completely gone Squishier than last time Water level was 200mls without egg

CONCLUSION: In this lab we explored the effects of osmosis. Over the course of four days the water molecules went from an area of higher concentration (the vinegar we used) to an area of lower concentration (the egg we used) through a selectively permeable membrane. Our egg expanded 3.1 cm, which was 0.1 cm more than our class average and 1.4 cm larger than the 7th grade average. My hypothesis was

correct one hundred percent of the time. In conclusion, the experiment went well, and we learned about the effects of osmosis. ANALYSIS: 1. The vinegar we used was 5% acidic acid and 95% water. The acidic acid in the vinegar caused a chemical reaction to occur and it dissolved the eggshell. 2. In period 7, group 3 had a total expansion of 4.5 cm, and group 7 had a total expansion of 1.1 cm. This means that group 3s egg expanded 1.125 cm per day, and that group 7s egg expanded 0.275 cm per day. This is highly irregular because they were put in the same amount of vinegar, and the same room. These groups could have gotten different measurements because of a miscalculation on their part, or some similar error. 3. Cells need water because most chemical reactions can only take place in water, water helps regulate the temperature of the cell, it helps the cell keep its shape and size, it dilutes chemicals, and plant cells wouldnt be able to photosynthesize if they didnt have water. These are all reasons of why cells need water.
