Planning, Preparation, Instruction, and Assessment of Learners As my class of 4th graders moved on in their Math unit from patterning

to rounding, I decided to take a day to review comparing and contrasting numbers. During guided math centers, I met with each group to check students understanding of comparing and contrasting whole numbers through the millions. Students showed adequate proficiency with the skill of comparing and contrasting numbers. Therefore, I decided to begin rounding. SOL 4.1 c) round whole numbers expressed through millions to the nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand. I pre-assessed my 4th graders on rounding prior to beginning the skill. I had my students complete a Power Practice handout which assessed students knowledge of rounding in the tens place and hundreds place. Most of the class was developing proficiency of the skill. I introduced the number line rule to the students. This tool gives students the ability to not only show understanding of how to round but it also gave them the ability to prove their answers. After completing whole group instruction, as well as guided flex groups, I decided to formatively assess my students. The artifacts attached display a students performance on the pre-assessment given as well as how that same student did on the formative assessment. The student shows quantitative growth and proficiency in the skill of rounding whole numbers through millions to the nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand.
