Hays High School ALGEBRA I SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course will focus on topics that include: functions, specifically linear functions and quadratic functions, transformations of the previous functions, inverses of the previous functions, solving systems of equations and inequalities. RATIONALE: Our students will be prepared to function in a global society through the use of problem solving, communication, and reasoning by integrating the mathematical concepts across the curriculum areas in real-world situations. MATERIALS NEEDED: Spiral Notebook for Notes One 3 ring binder Pencils- NO WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED IN PEN *Calculators are not mandatory but recommended for homework. We have a class set, but students will not be allowed to take these out of the classroom. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Students must follow the Hays High School rules at all times (see Student Handbook). It is expected that all students have a successful year. In order to accomplish this goal, students need to: Be considerate and respectful at all times to peers and authority figures. Act with honesty and integrity at all times. Get to class promptly. This means seated with all materials ready to start when the bell rings. Come to class prepared every day. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the homework assignment and turn in all homework that was due when you were absent. Put away cell phones and electronic devices before class starts. I will pick them up as necessary. Have fun and learn! MISBEHAVIOR CONSEQUENCES: Students will write a change of behavior plan stating three things: what they did wrong, why they did it and what they are going to do differently so that they will not repeat it. Call home and explain the misbehavior and what changes I would like to see with their behavior. Parent /teacher conferences Saturday School Refer the student to the office

GRADING POLICY: Student grades will be based on the following weighted scale: 60% Test (3 tests per 9 weeks) 40% Homework/Daily Work/Quiz

1. If you know you are going to miss class on a test day, arrange a time with me to take the test. If you unexpectedly miss a test, you are responsible to come to tutorials within five days and take the test. 2. During the last week of each six weeks, a make-up test will be given for students who miss one of their regular tests during the grading period. The make-up test will cover the same material as the other tests given during that grading period. If a student has missed a test, it is his/her responsibility to ask for a copy of that test to help prepare for the makeup test. This test will be given outside of class during the last week of the grading period. 3. Late work will be accepted for 80% credit. It must be turned in within five consecutive school days of the due date.

RETESTING POLICIES: a. TESTS- For those who did not earn at least a 80% on a test. A replacement test can be offered within 5 days of getting back your test. The test will be offered during the morning. In order to be eligible to take the test, student must come to at least one tutoring session and do test corrections. Tests will be kept on file with the teacher. Students may make appointments to view the tests. b. QUIZZES- For those who did not earn at least a 80% on a quiz. The test over that unit will be the replacement quiz. Student must submit quiz corrections. FINALS: Please keep all tests after they are handed back. You must do test corrections and turn your tests back in at the end of each semester.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Although you are encouraged to work cooperatively on homework assignments, cheating will not be tolerated on any assignment. Any student(s) caught cheat will receive an automatic 0 on the assignment as is the policy of Hays High School. Your parents and administrators will then be notified.

TUTORING HOURS: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:15-8:45am

*FIELD TRIPS*
Students are expected to turn in homework due the day of a field trip prior to missing the class. Also, you need to get the next assignment. Keep an open line of communication with me when you know you are going to be absent for a school-related event so that we can work together toward getting you caught up.
