Focus and Purpose of Lesson: The Smash and Drop shot in Badminton. Student Performance Objectives (SPO): (NASPE #___; MA CF #___ ; Task/Activity #___)
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

(P) Perform the smash shot successfully 3 times in a row during the first activity (NASPE # 1; MA CF #2.17; Act. 1) (C) Identify the correct time to use a drop shot and a smash shot when asked by the teacher at the end of the lesson (NASPE # 2; MA CF #2.17; Closure). (A) Demonstrate safety by hitting in the same direction during the first activity (NASPE # 5; MA CF # 2.26; Act. 1). Check each objective is it specific? Is it achievable? Is it developmentally appropriate? Teacher Performance Objectives During the lesson the teacher will: 1. Clearly and concisely explain what the types of shots are, and why we do them. 2. Discuss safety issues and importance of striking the birdies in the same direction during the first activity. 3. Give instructional feedback to the entire class to ensure understanding of shots. 4. Make activities challenging, but exciting to let students learn while enjoying themselves. Special Considerations Make sure students are hitting in the same direction to ensure safety. Keep students actively involved while participating in activities. Constantly be aware of surrounding and put equipment down when teacher is talking.

SEQUENCE OF LESSON Attendance: Ss must be in the locker room before bell rings. Ss will meet in the gym where attendance will be taken. Once students are ready, warm up will start. Warm-Up: Ss will participate in a run in the middle of the gym between the nets for 2 minutes. One student will then be selected to lead the class in 10 3-count jumping jacks. The Ss will end the warm-up on 10 push-ups followed by 10 crunches. Introduction: T will discuss what todays lesson and activity is with Ss. Safety instructions will also be provided to Ss. Focus of the day: Badminton- Smash and Drop shots. Start and stop signals: Start- I will inform Ss with Ready, Go! StopWhen whistle blows Ss stop and put equipment at feet. Safety: Ss will hit in the same direction during activities to ensure safety. Ss will not touch the nets set up in the middle of the gym. Transition: Ss will finish warm up and gather at the first badminton net where T will provide instruction and

demonstrate activity with one S and co- teacher. Informing: Smash Shot and Drop ShotThere are several different types of shots used in Badminton to help beat an opponent. The two shots we will work on today are the Smash and Drop shots. These shots may look very similar, but have a much different outcome. Smash Shot: In Badminton, the smash shot is used typically when your opponent hits a high shot towards you. It is hit at a downward angle and ideally placed at or around your opponents feet. The idea of the smash shot is to hit it with power so your opponent has little time to react. You want the birdie to get to the ground as fast as possible and used racquet speed to do so. The smash cannot be performed every time, but when it is used it can be very effective. The reason it cannot be used every time is if the birdie is low, a smash cannot make it over the net, so a lob shot would need to occur. A backhand smash shot is very similar but your elbow should be up so the birdie can be hit downward. Smash Shot Skill Cues: Hold racquet like your shaking hands with your thumb pointed up. Start with your body facing the sideline. If you are right handed your left shoulder should face the net. If your left handed, your right shoulder will. Generate power through the turning of your body. Follow through as the birdie is

coming down so you can meet it in the air and hit at a downward angle. Smash should be hit when the birdie is over your head, over your hitting shoulder. Best used if you are in front of your own court.

Drop Shot: The drop shot looks very similar to the smash shot, but instead of hitting the birdie with power, Ss should slow down racquet speed. The point of the drop shot is to hit the birdie as close to the net as possible, so it just goes over the net and drops to the ground quickly. Ss will hit this shot with the same form as a smash shot (body towards sideline then opened up), but will slow the hit down to barely put it over the net. This looks like a smash shot so your opponent may not be prepared to recover and return the birdie. The drop shot looks similar to the smash to confuse the defender and make them unsure of where the birdie is going, making it difficult to react. Drop Shot Skill Cues: Hold racquet like you're shaking hands with your thumb pointed up. Start facing the sideline. If you are right handed your left shoulder will face the net. If you are left handed, your right shoulder will. Open up body like a smash shot, but slow down racquet speed. Contact will be made above your hitting shoulder. No follow through on the drop

shot, the birdie won't go as far and should drop over the net. Refining: Benefits to the Smash and Drop Shots.
Makes opponent unsure of where the birdie is going. Smash shot leaves little time to react. Drop shot disguises as a smash, but is hard to recover to and return. Drop shot is best used when opponent is deep in their own court.

Demonstration: T will ask for a 10:12- volunteer to help with demonstration. T and Co- teacher will also demonstrate. 10:17 Student will hit a birdie over the net to the Co- teacher where he will perform a smash shot as T points out the skill cues. The same will be done with the drop shot.

Co- teacher demonstrates with S as T explains.

CFU:- Where should the drop shot land if done properly? Just over the net, falling quickly to the ground. Why is a smash shot effective? Gives little time for the opponent to recover and return shot. Transition: T will then explain the first activity to the Ss before 10:17- equipment is handed out. Once 10:18 explained Ss will get a racquet and one birdie per group. Groups are selected by the Ss when told to find a partner in 10 seconds. Ss will then find a court to participate in activity. Ss will be divided up onto 8 courts; some courts will have 2 groups.

Activity 1: Competitive practice: Smash and Drop ShotSs will have an opportunity to practice the smash and drop shot while working and competing against a partner. One S will start 10:18- with the birdie and hit it gently over 10:26 to their partner. Their partner will then perform the smash shot and attempt to hit the birdie within a racquet length of opponents feet. Ss will get 10 smash shots and they will receive a point if birdie lands within a racquet length. Ss will then hit 10 drop shots and attempt to hit them just over the net, but more than a racquets length in front of opponent. Each Ss will have 20 practice shots total (10 of each shot). The partner with the most points wins.

More than one group may be on the court. Ss will get 10 chances for each shot. Ss will then switch.

Smash shot 1. Each partner will have 10 shots. 2. Birdie needs to land within a racquet length away from partner to get a point. 3. Skill cues will be enforced. Drop Shot 1. Ss will have 10 shots each. 2. Birdie needs to land in front of opponent (more than a racquets length) to get a point. Or in short service area. 3. Opponent will stand in middle of the court. Motivational Objective: Challenge Ss to compete with partner while performing the proper technique of the smash and drop shots. 10:26- Transition: Ss will stay on the court 10:30 they are already on for a demonstration and projected

instruction on the next activity. Activity 2: Doubles Tournament Play This next activity will be a modified game where Ss are able to perform the smash and drop shot that were learned today, and compete with 10:30different students. Ss will work with 10:42 whoever is next to them in a doubles match of Badminton. This will be tournament style with 3-4 of the courts being used on each side of the gym. Each side of the gym will be a separate tournament. Ss will keep their own score, if the birdie lands on a line it is considered in. Ss will rotate to the right after a 4 minute game. This way Ss will all participate and be able to use the two shots that were taught today. 10:42- Transition: Ss will bring in all 10:43 equipment and return in it to the correct place. Ss will then meet in the corner of the gym to receive a closure from the T. Closure: T will review the 2 types of 10:43shots that were taught today (smash 10:45 and drop). What is a benefit to hitting a smash shot? What is the purpose of hitting a drop shot? SSSS SSSS SSSS SSSS T Co- T
