LESSON 2 (Tuesday)

80-minute block period Teacher Overview: Teacher should ensure that a world map is hung at the front of the classroom in plain view of all students. This is a geography lesson. It is very important that students have a clear understanding of what countries in the world sided with the USA and with the USSR during the Cold War; and where those countries were located. Students should note the geographic location of those communist bloc countries and their close proximity to Russia. Objectives: Students will locate the main countries that supported the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War. Students will evaluate the pros and cons of communism and democracy and understand how those political beliefs affected the countries that practiced them. Content Standards: Sub-Strand 10.9: Students analyze the international developments in the postWorld War II world. Common Core Standards: 10.SL.1 Initiate and participate in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively 10.SL.5 Make strategic use of digital media in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence to add interest Technology Standards: Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Anticipatory Set: Students will use iPads. Teacher should check out the iPad cart ahead of time and issue one to each group of 2 students. Students always work in groups when using the iPads. There are not enough iPads for students to have their own. Using sheppardssoftware.com, students will match the European countries to their correct name. Students should record the countries and their capital cities in their notebook. It is very important in understanding the Cold War to have a clear understanding of the locations of European countries and capital cities. Instruction: PART 1--Students will use iPads. PART 2--Using iPads together with a partner, students will recite the leaders of the Cold War using the Pro-metronome app. The tempo helps them memorize the leaders names. Students work together for 10 minutes memorizing the leaders names and what country they are affiliated with. (If time allows) PART 3--Using the iMovie app on the iPads, students will record themselves and make a video comparing and contrasting communism and democracy. They will upload the video to YouTube and solicit responses from their classmates. Homework: Students will meet in their assigned groups on Google+ and discuss the format and organization of their Voicethread projects, which are due on Friday. Every student should have a copy of the project rubric. I have attached the project rubric to lesson # 5.
