Motivation

Planning for whole-group instruction: plan in the same way for any lesson Organizing groups: organize students beforehand. Create teams that are mixed by ability, gender, and ethnicity. Ideal number is 4, but 5 works too. Planning for Team Study: have clear learning objectives, assignments, and instructions. The study materials should require convergent answers (clearly correct or incorrect)

Calculating Base Scores and Improvement Points: use the students base scores to give improvement points to motivate low achievers. Give maximum number of points for perfect score to motivate high achievers.

Instruction: explain and illustrate what the students will be working on in groups Transition to Teams: to promote group work and conflict, explain and illustrate the process for awarding improvement points and team awards. Team Study: monitor the students and intervene if necessary (not working together, domination, no participation). Give positive feedback. Recognizing Achievement: improvement points for quizzes, team scoring, and team awards.

Content:. Traditional assessment Group Processes: less formal. Monitor group interaction to see if students are learning to take personal responsibility and being production members of the group. Ask the following questions: Are all members contributing? Are some members dominating? Is the group interaction positive and supportive? Do boys and girls contribute equally? Are members from different ethnic groups participating?

Social: motivate through peer work The Individual: motivate the individual student through achievement points to encourage improvement (no matter how small). Give perfect scores the maximum number of points to motivate high achievers The Group: team scoring and awards will motivate the group to work together and participate equally.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

STAD is a learning strategy that enhances social skill such as team work through placing students into diverse groups for team study and motivating them individually and as a group though improvement points and group awards.
