1 Confidence interval and Hypothesis test (1-sided) (a) When do we do 1-sided confidence interval? (b) Consider children exposed to high levels of lead and other toxic substances. Supposed their hemoglobin levels are distributed as N(, 2), where is not known and assume that _ = 0.85 g/ml; assume x74 = 10.6 g/100 ml. In the general population, the mean is 12.29 g/100 ml, assume the same standard deviation. Let (i) Obtain an appropriate 1-sided confidence interval for = 0.05 (ii) Define an appropriate statistical test on the effect of the toxic substances, Carry out the test, and give the inference Specify the p-value for the test. Obtain the value Estimate the sample size if we wish to test for = 0.01 (iii) Suppose that the given is actually s74 . Repeat parts (i) and (ii) (Note: you will have to use t-test)

2 Comparison of two populations: A sample of n1 =9 healthy children has mean serum iron level _ _ x1=18.9 mol/l and s1 = 5.9 mol/l ; the figures for 13 children with cystic fibrosis are x2 = 11.9 mol/l and s2 = 6.3 mol/l. (a) Obtain the 95% confidence intervals for healthy and children with cystic fibrosis, and plot on the same graph (b) Test the hypothesis that the two means are equal. Note: pool the squared errors assuming that the variances of the two populations are equal resulting in degree of freedom of n1 + n2 - 2 Obtain the p value
