Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. 1. Mass the beaker 2. Add in a level teaspoon of iron powder into the beaker 3. Mass the powder with the beaker 4. Calculate the mass B. Beaker: 28.696 g Beaker + Iron= 34.287 g Iron Powder= 5.591 g

C. (5.591 g Fe/1 level teaspoon) x (1 mole Fe/ 55.85 g) = 0.1001 mol of Fe 1 mol Fe/ (0.1001 mol Fe/1 level teaspoon) = 9.990 teaspoons of Fe/ mol of iron powder Concluding Statement: It takes 9.990 teaspoons of iron powder to make 1 mol of iron powder. 2. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. 1. Mass the piece of zinc 2. Calculate and convert the mass of the zinc to moles then to number of atoms B. 2.00cm2 piece of Zinc: 1.032 g C. 1.032 g Zn/2.00cm2 x (1 mol Zn/65.38 g) = 0.01579 mol Zn/ 2.00cm2 0.01579 mol Zn x (6.022 x 1023 atoms of Zn/1 mol Zn) = (9.506 x 1021 atoms of Zn/ 2.00cm2 Zn ) Concluding Statement: There are 9.506 x 1021 atoms of Zn in the 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal.
